I haven't really been reading, what with a ton of work at math and chemistry and this forum. But I'd recommend: The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho (the title alone seemed very inviting

The Lord of the Rings trilogy are the most redundant wordy crap ever. I read The Hobbit (which took me forever) and that was it. I like C.S. Lewis better. (He was said to be an old friend of LOTR creator, whatever his name is, and that's why they both wrote those fantasy series.)

Hmm... it doesn't really talk about alchemy. The alchemist doesn't even show up in the first half of the book. It's a magic-realism kind of story. A very nice fantasy book that I actually finished that in one sitting! Short and sweet, too.

I own "The Alchemist" as well, plus 3 other Paulo Coelho titles. I actually haven't read them yet. I have a habit of buying books and not reading them until . . . circa 2 years later?
I also read Philosophy books. Currently working on Friedrich Nietzche's "Thus Spoke Zarathustra". It's . . . interesting. I plan to read Plato's "Symposium" some time soon. It seems to be an enjoyable read.
I have also been known to read the dictionary. Some of my friends have dubbed me the "LexiCon" (Con being the first 3 letters of my first name). And for those of you who don't know, "lexicon" is actually a word. Simply another word for "dictionary". Now you can go tell your parents that you learned something on the Internet today!
A book that I quite enjoyed was Joseph Finder's "Paranoia". It's amazingly intricate.

At least you read them. I don't think I've read any of the books I actually own. I like to read library books better. (Good thing I realized this and stopped buying books in the first place.)
Quistis88
Oct 8 2004, 03:38 PM
The trouble with most of the books I want to read is that the libraries do not have them available. Therefore, I must buy them. And this way, even if I don't get to them right away, they'll always be there waiting for me. No overdue charges to worry about.

another question, we're reading The Outsiders by S.E. Hinston.. has anyone read or saw the movie yet?
The Flame Alchemist LuckyANBU
Oct 8 2004, 06:22 PM
i like sci-fi or fantasy books
books rich in detail of their surroundings and characters i could read a book with interseting characters and a detailed world and it could have almost no plot at all and i would still think it was great but for fantasy and sci-fi that doesnt work so well
but i like reading about peoples daily musings in a beautiful surrounding..kinda like the book im reading now the samurai's garden its ust about these few eople in japan that do stuff like work inthe garden and other junk like that but the detail of the world around them is beautiful and it makes me calm just thnking about where they are while im reading.

Yea, in grade school I used to read only Enid Blyton. She's from Britain or somewhere in Europe though, so her books can rarely be found here.
The Outsiders.

Maybe it's every eighth grade's must-read book. Good book. There is minor pornography in the movie though.

I've read "The Outsiders" and have seen the movie, but that was way back in Grade 8. All I really remember is one passage:
"Stay gold, Pony Boy, stay gold."
Who said that? Was it Soda Pop or something like that? I remember that they had interesting names.

P.S. Quistis, in the spirit of being grammatically correct, books are supposed to be underlined, not in quotation.

Haha! Thanks for the reminder, Gashole.

I didn't even notice that I was. I've been too lazy to underline things anyway, so I usually just use quotes, as I do the same for song names and other short works.
Let me slide, just this once?

Mercedes Lackey writes fantasy-scifi books. Her best well-known are the "Heralds of Valdemar" serious, which is excellent. Its a series of trilogies and dualogies set in the kingdom of Valdemar and the surrounding lands. An excellent series and one I'd highly reccommend. She also written a few other books, but I haven't had a chance to get ahold of those.

Yes, kind of disturbing. But you should've seen the alternate ending I wrote for it for a creative writing project! I can't believe that came out of my finger tips!
