Which tales of Poe?
Thievesvinegar

yes, he has quite a few. Most of them good.
The Brothers Karamazov anyone?
For you writers:
We live in a world ruled by fictions of every kind- mass merchandising, advertising, politics conducted as a branch of advertising, the instant translation of science and technology into popular imagery, the increasing blurring and intermingling of identities within the realm of consumer goods, the preempting of any free or imaginative response to experience by the television screen. We live inside an enormous novel. For the writer in particular it is less necessary for him to invent the fictional content of his novel. The fiction is already there. The writer's task is to invent the reality.
(J.G Ballard)

I just bought that one, but haven't started it yet. I recently finished a collection of Dostoyevsky stories that I really enjoyed (including White Nights, The Meek One, Dream of a Ridiculous Man, The Double, and Notes from the Underground) so I thought I'd give one of his novels a try. So, I take it The Brothers Karamov is pretty good?

You've read a book right Anime Gal? If not I recommend a book by Orson Scott Card. Most preferrably the Ender's Game series. Or why not a book like The Odyssey (forgot how to spell it

" ) Much action in that one, very adventurous. It's a great Greek Myth

Yes, I don't think I've heard of the book Manga before

... Though I know what you
mean by that and although manga is interesting in all it's glory, I really prefer reading an actual book with more than dialogue, thoughts, and a few boxes of narration thank you very much.

Anyways to answer the poll, yes! I <3 books. Usually I'll go to the bookstore and stay there for hours at a time reading. You must be CRAZY TO NOT LIKE BOOKS!!!

How long do you read in one sitting? I used to be able to pull off 4-5 hours. Now I can barely do 2. My patience level has diminished and I can't think why.

When I was younger, back in around junior high or so, I could do 6-7 hours at a time. But now, I have more of a life and a lot less spare time, in addition to many other obligations.

Oscar Wilde's "Lord Arthur Savile's" is surprisingly funny for something that was written in the nineteenth century.

I've been more along the lines of attempting to read than actually reading lately. Though I did recently read Dragon's Winter by Elizabeth A. Lynn, and it was pretty good. I'm trying to read Steven King's Dreamcatcher and Anne Rice's Witching Hour, but I'm having some trouble handling heavyer book at the moment. I'm not really sure why yet.

Has anyone ever read the 'His Dark Materials' trilogy by Phillip Pullman? I think fans of FMA would like them. They're, in order, The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass. Yeah, there's a movie in the works but they're taking out a huge subject of the book.

I'm still confused as to what I think of the books. Overall I really enjoyed them - the characters are excellent, the writing is very good, the ending was sad and beautiful. But I really dislike the anti-Christian theme.
It also worries me that this somehow got classed as a children's book. Aside of the religious themes (the view it gives of Christianity isn't a good thing to be presenting to kids about any religion!) it seems quite adult and violent to me. Considering all the fuss over the "evils" of Harry Potter, this book is far worse and yet never mentioned.
That aside, yes, it is an enjoyable book. If you're a fan, I definitely recommend the audiobook version - it's read by a full cast, with Philip Pullman himself as the narrator.

They're making this trilogy into a movie?! *dances* I enjoy reading Phillip Pullman's books and these three are some of my favorite. My friend introdued me to The Golden Compass in fourth grade and I didn't actually read it until sixth grade. I am guilty

The audibook was excellent, and very moving at the end. I heard the movie's taking out the Christain themes, though.

I thought the controversy in the books added a bit of a bite to it. It gave it a twist and made it more than the generic, innocent "children's" book.
I'll move this to Open Chat since many here believe it belongs there instead.

I agree. It gave me the feeling that the author put a bit more thought into what he was writing. It was like looking at what he wrote in a totally different perspective.
