I looked around and didn't see a thread about this so i made it.
I just started learning Japanese and i learned that in Japan R's are pronounced as L's. So instead of Riza it's actually Lisa. Maybe it's just my book is a crock, or a knockoff or something.

It's generally written and pronounced 'Riza' with an R sound. 'Liza' might be an extraneous translation or somesuch, but I'm not familiar enough with Japanese spelling to say any more than that it's what everyone except for Evil Genius spelled it as. Sometimes, Ls and Rs sound similar- in the anime subs, Alphonse sounds sort of in betwee that and 'Arphonse' but it's pretty apparent that it's supposed to be Alphonse. Riza is the same. It sounds a bit closer to an R, though.

R's are pronounced as neither "R" nor "L". There is really no differentiation, and this causes confusion to native speakers who try to learn other languages.
There's no correct way as far as we know. Riza sounds cooler, though.

me being the ROYxRIZA fan I am im pretty sure it's Riza with an "R". It says so on offical sites and so forth, "Liza" probably came from wrong dubbing as others have said before, so yea. It sounds better as Riza anyway

Actually, the official translators screwed up big-time. I know for a fact that it's 'Lisa' and not 'Riza'.
Remember when Roy and the gang were hunting for Barry the Chopper in the manga? Remember what Hawkeye's codename was? 'Elizabeth'. What's short for 'Elizabeth'? 'Lisa'.
THat is unless, of course, Arakawa in mind had that quirky Eastern European version of the name, 'Erszebet', in which case it actually could be shortened to 'Riza'. But that's not especially likely.

Yes. A code name. Meaning not her real name. And Jean was Jaqueline, Kain was Kate, and eventually, Barry was "Bonnie".
I sure hope those aren't their 'real' names.
Really, why would they use her real full name as a code name when they were trying to hide the fact that they really were talking to each other?

Because the casual observer wouldn't be able to make that connection, anyway.

Cain certainly is.
For that matter, though; Winly isn't a real name for a person. Den isn't a name either, regardless of whether it's for a dog. Lots of silly Engrish names are present in pseudo-western anime.
Besides, Riza sounds cool and hardcore. Lisa sounds dorky.

Noa got me confused when I was checking out articles, and I didn't realize until later that it was a girl XD but if it does really have an origin, then it's okay. Just kind of a name that might confuse people during role call.
And eh... earlier somebody menitioned that "Lisa" was a dorky name. How much self-confidence is that going to give, me because that's MY name!

Aaaw. *pets* It's just the inevitable grip that the evil media has taken upon my perception of the world, in this case manifesting itself in the indelible image of Lisa Simpson, an undeniably dorky embodiment of her name.
That's probably where that came from, anyway.

For me, I'll go with the anime/manga as "Riza"

.. I've already met 6 people with "Lisa" in "Melisa"

Actually, Japanese people have a very hard struggle with the letter "L"... they can't pronounce it! (Who the hell knows why) And, that is way, some anime names have versions like Slam Dunk, for example. Some versions have "Lukawa" on them, some have "Rukawa".
That is all.
