I looked around and didn't see a thread about this so i made it. smile.gif

I just started learning Japanese and i learned that in Japan R's are pronounced as L's. So instead of Riza it's actually Lisa. Maybe it's just my book is a crock, or a knockoff or something.
MonsterEnvy
It's generally written and pronounced 'Riza' with an R sound. 'Liza' might be an extraneous translation or somesuch, but I'm not familiar enough with Japanese spelling to say any more than that it's what everyone except for Evil Genius spelled it as. Sometimes, Ls and Rs sound similar- in the anime subs, Alphonse sounds sort of in betwee that and 'Arphonse' but it's pretty apparent that it's supposed to be Alphonse. Riza is the same. It sounds a bit closer to an R, though.
Toby-Chan
R's are pronounced as neither "R" nor "L". There is really no differentiation, and this causes confusion to native speakers who try to learn other languages.

There's no correct way as far as we know. Riza sounds cooler, though.
elalquimistafilosofal
the correct form of write it, is with "R", just that in some lenguages sound wierd, and sound like a "L", but is Riza

yeah Riza does sound better.
Jo21
Of course it is Riza! What else could it be?! no da?! dry.gif mad.gif
Hyugafalcon
The official spelling is Riza, but some people prefer to spell it different ways.
sweety_pie
I knew it was Riza! I just wanted to know if it was just my book that I'm learning Japanese from was a ripp-off.
fMa_nv92
I think it's Riza........well, cuzz Riza gots an edge to it.....
and Lt. Hawkeye is edgy...^^
ROY'S FRIEND
me being the ROYxRIZA fan I am im pretty sure it's Riza with an "R". It says so on offical sites and so forth, "Liza" probably came from wrong dubbing as others have said before, so yea. It sounds better as Riza anyway laugh.gif
Carnal Malefactor
Actually, the official translators screwed up big-time. I know for a fact that it's 'Lisa' and not 'Riza'.

Remember when Roy and the gang were hunting for Barry the Chopper in the manga? Remember what Hawkeye's codename was? 'Elizabeth'. What's short for 'Elizabeth'? 'Lisa'.

THat is unless, of course, Arakawa in mind had that quirky Eastern European version of the name, 'Erszebet', in which case it actually could be shortened to 'Riza'. But that's not especially likely.
sweety_pie
See, I knew it was sopposed to be Lisa and someone finally agrees with me!!!
chemist
i think that is riza,...but Void explain was amazing (in what ep???)

Yes. A code name. Meaning not her real name. And Jean was Jaqueline, Kain was Kate, and eventually, Barry was "Bonnie".

I sure hope those aren't their 'real' names.

Really, why would they use her real full name as a code name when they were trying to hide the fact that they really were talking to each other?

Because the casual observer wouldn't be able to make that connection, anyway.

Eh, I'm gonna have to agree with Toby. Even if the chances were low of a connection being made, I doubt they'd risk using her real first name.
Carnal Malefactor
Well, my trump card is that 'Riza' isn't a real name. tongue.gif

Are 'Vato', 'Heymans', and 'Cain' real names? Or at least names that actually appear in society?

Cain certainly is.

For that matter, though; Winly isn't a real name for a person. Den isn't a name either, regardless of whether it's for a dog. Lots of silly Engrish names are present in pseudo-western anime.

Besides, Riza sounds cool and hardcore. Lisa sounds dorky. tongue.gif */immature argument*
Ailuro
Yes, I was gonna leave 'Cain' out, but it just completed the set. laugh.gif

You insults teh bible, Hor! >:C

Let's keep this little list going of names that aren't real names in FMA

Karin (Not in the western world at least)
Pinaco
Lujon
Cornello
Rosary
Armony
King
Basque
Zolof
Ailuro
You can't use that 'Riza isn't a real name' excuse anymore, Bacon. Unless you want to argue all the other non-names. =p
Toby-Chan
Oh and I forgot Glacier. ohmy.gif I'm glad they decided to change that.

(Is Deitlinde a real name?)
Ailuro
Apparently it is.

Dietlinde

The name Dietlinde is of German origin. Dietlinde is a female name.

From this site right here.
Toby-Chan
Aha.

And I wonder... I've never met a girl named Noa either.

(This is wandering a teensy bit off topic, innit?)
Ailuro
I was about to question Noa as well.

I suppose it has gone off-topic a tad, but it still obscurely relates to the main topic. tongue.gif
MeLRizA
Remember the story of "Noah's ark" in the bible? Maybe that's where "Noa" came from..
Ailuro
Well, duh. But since when is it used as a female name?
MeLRizA
Well, I dunno but here..

Ailuro
Hm, okay. smile.gif
Tombow
But, but, if we want to discuss other than the original topic of Riza/Liza difference, and instead, want to discuss about the origin of other character names in FMA...

We already have FMA Character names thread. rolleyes.gif
Hyugafalcon
Noa got me confused when I was checking out articles, and I didn't realize until later that it was a girl XD but if it does really have an origin, then it's okay. Just kind of a name that might confuse people during role call.
And eh... earlier somebody menitioned that "Lisa" was a dorky name. How much self-confidence is that going to give, me because that's MY name!

Aaaw. *pets* It's just the inevitable grip that the evil media has taken upon my perception of the world, in this case manifesting itself in the indelible image of Lisa Simpson, an undeniably dorky embodiment of her name.

That's probably where that came from, anyway.
Hyugafalcon
*Sighs* All of the nerds get my name... I've seen it on other random shows too...
Toby-Chan
:B

All the British chicks get my name.
Ailuro
I don't know anyone with my name! smile.gif
Toby-Chan
How exotic and unique! <333

(huh.gif I don't think I know your real name...)
Ailuro
Really? huh.gif

It's Kara. Except pronounced Car-uh and not care-uh.

And... now this really is off-topic. tongue.gif

Cool name laugh.gif and my ex-schoolmate's name is Cara.. same pronounciation..

For me, I'll go with the anime/manga as "Riza" rolleyes.gif , sounds way cooler and BTW, "Lisa" is quite a common name unsure.gif .. I've already met 6 people with "Lisa" in "Melisa" ohmy.gif

Back on sor of topic... where did everyone get the idea that any of the options is a nickname for Elizabeth (Especially plain Riza... weird)? For G-d's sake, she used it as a codename in the manga. Why would she even use her real name? Crazy...

Actualy, I'm not assuming it's from short name for Elizabeth. I know it could be, but I kind of like her better as Riza, and not as Elizabeth. biggrin.gif
Hyugafalcon
Trust me, I've seen way too many people who seem to want to confuse me like that (Especially cheesy fanfic writers...)
FullMetalSpork Alchemist
dry.gif Actually, Japanese people have a very hard struggle with the letter "L"... they can't pronounce it! (Who the hell knows why) And, that is way, some anime names have versions like Slam Dunk, for example. Some versions have "Lukawa" on them, some have "Rukawa".
That is all.
*blows self away*

I would say riza but thats just me
