~ Kimbley's State Alchemist Name?, From Perfect Guide Book 2! ~

So I ask... Anyone of you Japanese-speaking, PGB2-owning (or PGB2-scans-having) people could tell me Kimbley's State Alchemist second name?

It is there, that's for certain, but I don't know those 2 kanjis at all... sad.gif
MonsterEnvy
The anime calls him the "crimson alchemist", Zolf Kimbley. I don't think it's been mentioned in the manga.

That's why I made this thread, because it IS mentioned, in Perfect guide Book 2!

Here, providing scan:

[attachmentid=4234]

Did a little research on my own with IME pad and found the pronunciations:

First one: Kou, Ku (onyomi, Chinese)
Beni, Kurenai (kunyomi, Japanese)

Second one: Ren (onyomi)
Hasu, Hachisu (kunyomi)

Then, I knew "Kurenai" meant crimson, and a little search on Internet revealed "hasu" to be Lotus.

Therefore, I'll venture... Kouren no Renkinjutsushi = The Crimson Lotus Alchemist (oh, poethical)
But I'm not certain, so I still ask for confirmation (or denial)
MonsterEnvy
Not in the manga proper, at least. The second character doesn't look like it has any sort of "flower" or "plant" radical, but it might just be the poor resolution i'm getting.

Yup, but the PGBs are the next best thing.
At least, we're all clear on facts like Grumman being Riza's grandfather (this was what I was looking for when I noticed about Kimbley) or Pride being the oldest hommunculus, born long before the rest (except Lust). These come from the 2nd book and not from the manga.

It does have the upper "plant" radical.
A plant that travels... a lotus, why, of course!

Boy, I love the kanji logic, it's oh so full of crack! laugh.gif
Toby-Chan
In the anime, it's Guren no renkinjutsushi.

Kanji is so wierd.

Well an explosion could look like a crimson lotus or flower if seen right.

Hey Sensenic, do you have a better scan of those pages? I'd love to show them to my Nihongo Sensei at school.
Tombow
That's two Chinese characters making up one Japanese word "紅蓮(Beni-Basu in kun-youmi, or guren, or kouren in on-yomi) ," meaning either "crimson (colored) lotus (flower)" or describing the color itself, as "crimson color (of) lotus flower," I believe.

I've seen them doing that with other colors (two chinese characters as one word that's describing a type of color is quite common in Japanese language,) such as describing color of blue with two chinese characters (as one word) that's saying "blue color of saphire stone." smile.gif

BTW, they often like going quite "poetic" when it comes to colors, for example, not just saying "it was black," but describing black color as "(color of) craw with wet feather," like that. biggrin.gif

Oh, and the word "二つ名(Futatsu-Na)" below "紅蓮" in that scan, it means "second name," a.k.a. his "State Alchemist" name, like Arnstrong also has "二つ名(Futatsu-Na)" as "Strong Arm" alchemist, in that scan.happy.gif

So, yeah, I think that comes out to "Crimson Alchemist." smile.gif

Oh, beautiful. So it'll probably translate as just "The Crimson Alchemist" again...

Thx for your comments.

I know, I know, that's why I knew those 2 kanjis were the Kimbley's 2nd name.

It says the same for Mustang and "honoo" and Edward and "Hagane". happy.gif

BTW, wouldn't you mind writing these words in romaji? Just so I can read them I mean. The computers I'm at usually, don't have Japanese fonts (nor can install them sad.gif ) and I only see them funny little squares tongue.gif

The Crimson Lotus Alchemist, eh? That's a pretty cool title, I'll venture. Still wondering when Kimblee will come into play.

And what was Marcoh's title? I mean, in the Anime, it's "The Crystal Alchemist," but I assume it could be different in the Manga.

No title so far for him. Anywhere. Neither the manga nor the PGB2...

And Scar, who somehow had memorized the names of all the state alchemists (go figure how), didn't recognize him at all.

So, so far, now he seems to be more one of those alchemists working secretly for Bradley and Dad (and so far the only one who wasn't "stoned" later), so undercover they probably didn't even need to be State Alchemists.

I think Marcoh was more of a behind the scenes Alchemist, like Tucker. Not on the battlefeild. Since he ran away, they might have erased some records, or listed him as missing or dead or whatnot.

Well, the "behind the scenes" part was more or less what I meant... But Tucker was the exact opposite, I'm afraid: He was a low-class alchemist who was used as a facade on the chimera research (as Greed's chimeras had been made far before... therefore they didn't kneed Tucker's knowledge at all), so he was kept public as the man with the best chimera knowledge to hide (my guess) the existance of the other chimeras to the other alchemists. So they don't begin suspecting things and stuff.

To put it on another way: Remember your quote in one of your sigs on "there is a world under yours where light doesn't reach..." or similar? Tucker belonged to the upper world, as a cover to this darker one.

And, for the rest, you're right... we certainly do not know all we can about Marcoh... But this one thing is certain: if he was a SA, his second name hasn't been mentioned ever (nor him being a SA, actually. Always been called a researcher.).

~ Character Names According To Arakawa-sensei! The secret meanings and inside jokes! ~

I thought for sure there was a thread about this already but I searched and searched and couldn't find it. So I will post this anyway and hope nobody locks it.

Ahem! So have you ever wondered why the characters of FMA have the names they do? Some names seem strange at first sight, but even the normal ones have secret origins. Hiromu Arakawa has explained in interviews before why certain names were chosen, and here I will reveal them to you!

Edward Elric-- Named after the title character of the Tim Burton movie "Edward Scissorhands"
Alphonse Elric -- This is the only one I do'nt know! If you have any info, please leave it in a comment!
Hohenheim-- Named after a real life alchemist named Theophrastus Bombastus von Hohenheim (aka Paracelsus)

Members of the Military-- All named after WW2 fighter planes; Mustang, Hawkeye, Havoc, Fury, Breda, Falman, etc.

Winry Rockbell-- Named after Winly, a tool manufacturing company in Taiwan
Pinako Rockbell-- Named after Pinaco, a tool manufacturing company in Vietnam

The Homunculi-- All named after the Seven Deadly Sins: Lust (Latin, luxuria) Gluttony (Latin, gula) Greed (Latin, avaritia) Sloth (Latin, acedia) Wrath (Latin, ira) Envy (Latin, invidia) Pride (Latin, superbia)

Barry the Chopper-- Name based on that of the famous serial killer Jack the Ripper

Dante-- Named after the author of "the Divine Comedy", Dante Alighieri
major_ed_pride
Are you sure about Ed's name? Just wonderin' ^.^
Automne
Well, Antimony said that it was Arakawa who explained the meanings of the names herself, so that's certainly true.
Chiyo
*looks up at her Edward Scissorhands poster*

That must be one of the first times an obsession started before I even knew what I was going to be obsessed by haha.

And that would be why no-one can find the meaning of the name Winry, its completely random.
Nil-chan
Omg, those are amazing! I already knew about the military ones and the Homunculi, but the rest surprised me. They made sense, though. happy.gif
Toby-Chan
Arakawa didn't make Dante.

... did she?

Either way, the homunculi were an obvious thing, as well as Dante, if you know your religious history, then it's a 'duh'. Knew Hohenheim. The others were an interesting suprise.

(So it -is- Winly?)

Since in many asian languages "R" and "L" are the same consonant, it could be Winry or Winly. The latter feels awkward though when I say it.
Nil-chan
@Tombow: Riza was named after the E-2 Hawkeye, which is as follows..."The E-2 Hawkeye was designed for airborne early warning, command and control. Carrying no armaments, it is classes as reconnaissance. "The Hawkeye provides all-weather airborne early warning and command and control functions for the carrier battle group. Additional missions include surface surveillance coordination, strike and interceptor control, search and rescue guidance and communications relay."

^definalty got that from the factbook part of this site.
Tombow
^^ Thanks Nil-chan!! Tho I knew abput Hawkeye part. biggrin.gif I want to know why Riza. happy.gif
Keoni
actually, Mustang has another meaning apart from The fighter plane (abd the obvious horse ofcourse happy.gif

Within the Navy and Military, a 'Mustang' is a term used for officers who have been promoted through the ranks through an in-service procurement program. The nickname for such officers are used as a compliment on their being able to rise through the ranks so quickly; being able to survive through the training and conditions thrown to them while in serivce.

^^ Sounds like someone we know? biggrin.gif

Tombow, I'll look into the Origin of Riza, I'll have to get back to you on that one happy.gif

@ Keoni
Its ROY~~~ laugh.gif *squeezzeee... squeezzee..*

If the military had their surnames adapted from WWII planes, how about thier first names? Is there a reason for Roy Mustang or Riza Hawkeye (Tombow mentioned this^) or Jean Havoc? Gotta dig into that XD
Interesting, eh?
Stormdragon
I know for a fact that Roy means "KING" which is what he is aspiring to be, Fuhrer, King of the Country. Makes sense. Riza, I couldn't find anything. But Elizabeth means 'Consecrated to god.'
Keoni
^^ Yup I knew happy.gif Roy comes from Roi, which is French for .... you guessed it laugh.gif

Well, Riza means Promise of God... *thinks hard* I think that's relevant, but I can't come up with theories right now.....

EDIT
Wait! could it be that
it has something to do with Riza's tattoo and the ulimate alchemy Hawkeye-sensei was reffering to? And the words in the tattoo are from a Christian requiem! It all fits! biggrin.gif
Or something like that laugh.gif

I'm pretty sure Al was named after an actual alchemist. There was one named Alphonse.

Maybe it's in the meaning? Alphonse means noble or eager, and we know Al is both happy.gif

Ah so Barry came Jack the Ripper, strange I always though he was more like Ed Gein.

I don't think Ed is named after Mr. Scissorhands, because there is an actual legendry Alchemist who went by the name of Elric, and Edward s a very common name in Europe.
