I've really been putting things off for too long and the subject in the Shonen-ai thread threatened to steer [too much] FMA's way. So, why not?

All pairings can be discussed as far as I'm concerned. Though I have the feeling Roy/Ed, Al/Ed & Envy/Ed/Wrath will dominate this thread.

just a question, i'm really pretty neutral on a yaoi front, i could take it or leave it... i own some DJ myself, and the stuff that is well-written is actually kind of enjoyable...but i just wondered why so many people go so nuts over making homosexual innuendos with obviously heterosexual characters (and that is not a blanketing statement, some characters truly are questionable, i will admit *cough cough*envy*cough*)...many of whom have no apparent affinity for one another in the first place?

take, for example...the thousands and thousands of MirokuxSesshoumaru fanfictions i see...even when i'm not looking for fanfiction... they just pop up out of nowhere like annoying lemmings. and like...*every* character from *every* gundam series? i don't care how inebriated they get, miroku and sesshoumaru are NEVER going to get busy... i really highly doubt that yzak and kira are ever going to get it on, either... it just doesn't seem plausible to me...

as a writer myself, i enjoy coming up with situations that haven't been done yet... i have never written yaoi...nor do i particularly intend to start... but the question remains, at least in my mind: if roy and riza are obviously rather fond of oneanother...as are ed and winry (even tho it seems to be a love to hate relationship at times...) what would make ed and roy get together in the first place? ed makes it clear that he is annoyed by roy's presene, even if there is a degree of respect there... and besides, wouldn't that be kind of...er...statutory anyway? O_o

i'm not trying to start an argument...i'm just curious from which grounds came the explosion of yaoi pairings...not just from FMA, but in general? a lot of them just don't make much sense to me and, while i respect the opinions of other people...i just don't get it. O_o

I know what you mean, kind of, since I used to be like that myself when it came to Digimon and I have to admit that FMA doesn't really force people to pair people together.
Now Kase should explain the RoyxEd part... I understand it, but don't know how to explain it... Actually I don't reallly know how to explain the RussellxEd thing either, I'm so new to that pairing...I don't know, it's the kind of connection they have, sort of like friends, but then...I imagine it deeper. I guess that's what it's also about with pairing other guys together. Then there is the thing with not being satisfied with the realtionships in the anime..so people decide their own...

What would happen? Would it be a kind of love-hate relationship? Surely, it wouldn't be easy for both two... and the question became very interesting ^__^ It's only fantasy. But we love that fantasy XD

I'll make a short glossary with terms you might hear in my posts (in the future): OOC = Out of character, IC = In character, AU = Alternative universe, PWP = Plot, what plot?/Porn with plot or something... @.@ Aherm.

Yes, I always prefer my pairings as IC as possible. Unfortunately it not always works that way, because it's damned difficult to get a character as complex as FMA's really IC. That's why I'm of the opinion no writer will ever be able to make a character IC. You can only come amazingly close to IC.

Hmmm... but anyway, I suppose pairings would have to mostly be IC, because great fanon ones have proper bases, plus can't people write IC about characters even if the pairings aren't really? I guess basically, nobody but the author/creator can totally be IC when writing something. Whoever comes close with an image that seems credible is someone to be admired.

Envy with Riza and Roy? Um... that just popped into my head. Trying to imagine the most unlikely couples. Although I didn't do too well, I bet there would be more...like Armstrong and Wrath..okay, I don't know what got me started. Possible the talk about OOC couples and me trying to find examples of what couldnot happen to compare with one of my fav. pairings, that has a larger possibility of happening and thus seems possible. I know many people have this confusion with RoyxEd and why many people like it. Well, me being a fan, I see a lot of chemistry in it. However, someone summed it up pretty good in which I just nodded humbly:

As to the why of the pairing. Hm. I guess... it's because of how they interact - lots of sparks, high emotions on Ed's part and Roy does enjoy baiting Ed. Now put them in a close relationship and watch 'em snark at each other. Actually, you know what? I think part of the attraction of the pairing is because it wouldn't be easy, wouldn't be expected - like so much of FMA it would be going into a taboo area, or areas. Only here, instead of human transmutation, it's m/m relationships, military..ah, word... fraternization, that's it, older/younger couples - you can angst with this pairing until the cows come home, and at the same time you can still give it that humour and edge that's so addictive in FMA because it's Ed and Roy and there is no way that they'd ever be a boring couple.

Ed was seme with Roy in the fanfics and doujinshi I viewed.

I was weirded out like 'woah' when I first came upon it, but it really grew on me. Seeing as they are a gay couple, I can see them taking turns [ even if Ed would be uke pretty much all the time]. However, I know Ed wouldn't always want to be uke because he is young and so headstrong that he would want to top at times... especially when he is doing things with Roy. Roy seems to bring that kind of attitude out of him. x3

My favorite pairing is still Ed x Roy. Dunno why, I can't explain it. It just is. And thanks to Kase, I've been getting more and more into the Al x Ed pairing too. I mean, they're so close in every other aspect.

As far as Ed being the seme... I could see it if Roy pissed him off first, which isn't a far stretch considering the characters. I still tend to lean toward Ed as the uke though.

I'm still undecided about the Al x Ed pairing, though. I just can't see Al as a big, bad seme... and Ed's such a cute uke...
