Full Version: Chapter 59 "Regular" Discussion Thread For First Time Readers (and Others)
Fullmetal Alchemist Discussion Board > Fullmetal Alchemist Discussions > Fullmetal Alchemist Manga
Pages: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
MonsterEnvy
So, since the RAW is out, here's the new spoiler party thread, to continue our three-chapter tradition.

As is said in the topic title, this thread is a spoiler party. It will contain links to the RAW <- right there, and translations/scanlations as soon as they're up.

If you want to wait for a full scanlation, READ NO FURTHER.

Spoiler tags are unnecessary. Don't pamper people. If they can't read this post or the topic title, then they're too illiterate to be spoiled.

----Spoilers begin!----

So, WOW! That was something! Barry the Chopper on the first page, then Armstrong, then Kimbley, then Roy, then Hughes, then Hawkeye... it almost seems like a when-they-were-younger chapter from a shoujo...

So, AWESOME! We finally have resolution on the 'What was Hawkeye doing with that gun and Roy!?" question. That's a good thing. So, all of you who said that Hawkeye was protecting Roy, you're right! *hides in corner. Is shamed for distrusting hawkeye-sama...*

And, I've been disproved again! Or, perhaps I've been supported...

We finally see Marcoh making the Philosopher's Stone! Woah. It took thirteen sacrifices... not the five that I had predicted. That sucks. But, I still think that they only need five CHS because they need extra-powerful souls at the points. That's why they had two people there, probably... well, we also have a Lust cameo! Everyone who's dead is coming back to say hi! Same with Slasher.

Oh, that was nice. And it was five pages longer than the last two chapters!

I could hug someone.

*hugz*
GS4Life
Yipeeeeeeeeeeee! Thanks Animeoldtimer the raw is also out on zomgfta but when I clicked on it it tool me to some odd page and I think they wanted me to sign up for stuff I don't know because I couldn't download thrugh the usual manner.
MonsterEnvy
As is a pseudo-tradition now, I've started a Spoiler Party thread here for those who have read the RAW, so we aren't spoiled here.

That chapter was PWNAGE though. It's really refreshing from the last two short setup chapters.
Reika
OMG!!

please, translation.... T^T
Keoni
OMG! Thanks for posting that link!
Just one more minute untill raw-goodness! *squeee!*
Nil-chan
Must wait... grr... I can't stand looking at the Raws, but if the raw is out, then the translations must be up soon, ne?
Popogeejo
*Insane laugh*
I was right about why Hawkeye had Roy in her Sniper sights. biggrin.gif
I have no idea whats happening but Armstrong looks very upset. I assume the peeps he tried to save got boomed by Kimberly.
I got's to get my translations now...
I really want to know what Riza was saying in the second to last page. Looked important.

Well we know Armsrtong is troubled with what state alchemist have to do, I think it's about that, like "Why am I doing this? Isn't alchemy supposed to be for the people?" Or something like that happy.gif
And then he sees Kimblee go *Boom* and is really shocked
MasterKris
CRAP!! Raw's out already. blink.gif

MUST READ!
Keoni
* Read Raw*

Omg omg omg! I love it! It's my experiance that I actually can get a great deal of the story out of the raws. happy.gif My guesses arn't too far off. (most of the time)

Someone will definately translate it soon, or at least tell us the contents, I hope happy.gif
Right now I envy everyone who can read kanji! Not fair!
MasterKris
Gasp!! You just have no choice but to feel sorry for Armstrong in this chapta... sad.gif
Even though he had a past like that, he's always.... cheerful... in a weird way...

Perhaps about Riza's father situation?? ph34r.gif
Riza looked pretty scary in that snipper scene...

A small glimsp of Dorchet and that other gorilla dude! ohmy.gif
Keoni
I think what Riza is sying has something to do with Roy using his alchemy for stuff like this (war and killing) Don't think that's what Hawkeye Sensei wanted him to do....

BTW: I justed realized.. it looks like they are using those poor Ishvallans from chapter 58 to make the stone! blink.gif

Question!
Shouldn't we use spoiler tags? Like we did in the last one?
Popogeejo
Nah, spoiler party = no spoiler tags.
MonsterEnvy hasn't used any and he knows all so it must be ok.
Antimony
Wow! So many character cameos from beyond the grave! It's so refreshing to see Lust, Barry and the Chimera Gang even for one panel! There was lots of Hughes, too(gushing over a letter from Gracia XD)! And the Kimbley fans should be happy to see his face now. Personally I don't care too much for him, but at least he looks less ugly in black and white. ;p

On the last page, Scar's brother now has tattoos on BOTH arms and seems to have discovered something shocking in his alchemy books! But what?? Could it be connected to the Philosopher's Stone, or the alchemy Riza's father knew?

P.S.: Armstrong without his mustache looks freaky.
MasterKris
This is a spoiler party thread. This thread is significally made so that we don't have to use spoiler tags. People who don't want to read the RAW and wants to wait for the scanlations should't come here.

OMG! I didn't notice the silver alchemist! Good thing he appeared.. biggrin.gif ;;

Jeej for Hughes being in it! Looks like he got himself a letter from his grilfriend! LOL He's always the same happy.gif
MasterKris
In truthful words, I kinda do feel a bit dull with this chapta... mostly cause this chapta seems to be made in a way that it needs translations to ACTUALLY understand??

I mean, all the scenes we seen are pretty much what we know already, it's their DIALOGUE that we wanna know. WE WANNA KNOW WHAT THE HECT THEY ARE SAYIN'!! >_<

No, she was not!
The protecting theory was right, yeah, but not Mustang... She was protecting Hughes!!
She was assigned as his escort, and he introduces her to Mustang as later Havoc would do to Falman: "she has the eyes of a hawk". ohmy.gif Go, Arakawa sensei, go!
She happened to recognize (for reasons we already know now) the guy next to him as Mustang later. So that's why she aims at him, not to shoot, not to protect, but just to take a good look at him. Peeping Tom, I say! wink.gif

It seems after Riza's father's death they hadn't met! ohmy.gif (she asks him about that time and he replies with the usual "is it sth that can be forgotten?")

(Maybe?) Another Difference from the anime! When Kimbley blew up the 2 Ishvalans, he (apparently) didn't touch them, but blew them away from a distance! So maybe his alchemy is different!
Then again, seeing the name and the title (thx NeoKakashi and the others! We knew that! wink.gif ) are the same, she probably told the anime crew how Kimbley's alchemy worked too. And he could perfectly have blown up someone else, the blast reaching those 2... Shall we wait and see...

No sh*t! Really? Where?! I didn't catch! (and I have to go to bed... T_T)

A couple of notes from me:
- loved how everyone has "eyes of killing people" (those bags under the eyes). Roy notices it on Riza too...
- Another Ling we have found in Knox: someone who keeps getting more badass and badass everytime we see him: He tells Marcoh about the Rockbells, and Marcoh goes "WTF?! Are they stupid?!". Knox: "No, they're strong. Us doctors who are actually killing people are the weak ones". There goes Knox for you...
m(__)m
- What did Scar's brother discover in "this country's alchemy"?! WHAT?!! Oh, the agony....
And what country? Is he referring to Xing's (most probably) or did he just discover that "this country's alchemy.... IS WRONG" and that'd be Amestris.... ah, the doubt.

EDIT: After the enthusiasm, grammar check happy.gifU. Good night!
Toby-Chan
There wasn't really anything new or surprising here.

It would have been a lot more interesting if Riza were actually planning to shoot Mustang. Like a "Using father's alchemy to kill people; Die, traitor!" kind of thing...

But I guess I'll need to read the translation for details.

Anyways, that's nice to hear what's actually going on.

I was wondering, does anyone know what Armstrong is actually doing? At first, I thought that he was seperating the civilians from the firefight, but now, I think that he might have been trapping them to be killed. Which was it?

Kimbley was pretty great.

I'm excited for the translations...
Toby-Chan
Armstrong was trapping and killing them, just as all the soldiers sent in were ordered to do, and he finally broke, letting the woman and old man escape, only to see them blown away by Kimbley with his notanime!powers.

But he's a lovable one at times... well if we can see those times maybe. Still nice to see so many departed faces in this chapter smile.gif
Aoko-chan
Dorchett? Roa? WHERE!! *I must get glasses soon then if I can't see where they are*

Yeah, this chapter needs TRANSLATIONS to understand *is sobbing over her tiny Japanese knowledge*

I think he was trapping them to be killed actually. If he was separating them from the fire fight, he wouldn't have punched a hole in the wall and let them out (and get blown to pieces by the totallypwnstheanime!Kimbley)

I wonder what Scar's brother found out. How is Amestris's alchemy different than Xing's Rentanjutsu?! Even if I don't understand alot of it, but Arakawa STILL made loveable cliffhangers XD

Yay for Knox great-ness in saying that the Rockbell Doctors are STRONG! *raises Rockbell flag*
That gave us a solution to whose side Riza is on... Hughes's side. I find it interesting that Hughes can still act like that in the middle of a battle field.

Translations highly needed for me to function for the rest of the day without anxiety XD

He's using the word "Renkinjitsu," and not "Rentanjitsu," so probably not Xing??
But, I can't tell if he's talking about Amestris, or some other country... unsure.gif

On unrelated note, the human experiment part was shocking. At first it reminded me of Nazis, but then I rememberd Japan also did human experiments during the war time.
Overall, the content (the whole flashback) of this chapter is very, very somber....

Well... I don't know what to think. While on one hand it's true that he knows Xing's alchemy is called Rentanjutsu, I think that, like we do, he'd call it by default with the name he's always known...

I mean, his phrase can still be interpreted as:

There's sth wrong with this country's (Amestris') "alchemy"....

or

There's sth wrong with "this country's alchemy"... (as in, the country this paper is from, that is, Xing. and this country's alchemy, Rentanjutsu).

If you say "okashii" means "wrong", then I go with Amestris, tho'.
I thought it meant "strange" or similar, but it was too late to bother to check the dictionary... =_= happy.gifU

And about her father's death... she says literally: "it's been a while, mister mustang. Or should I say Mayor Mustang now? Do you remember me?" and he asnwers "As if I could forget about you". There's been something more in there, in fact, he says "mono", I think he's refering to her and what happened between him and her.

Then he thinks "that's right, it's like we said. This woman too.. has developed the eyes of a murderer"

Well, that's what I understood... \( u_u)/

Rechecked (I was in a hurry last night): OK, Hughes doesn't say anything about Riza specifically protecting him, but he knows her and Roy doesn't... And she doesn't see Roy until after shooting. So I guessed she came with Hughes.
And she was probably either scouting the area or specifically protecting Hughes.

The rest, dunno, more or less matches what I said... no?
Reika
haha, don't worry, I was just like "what?" because I read it, in a rush too, but I read it, and didn't understand that. So I rechecked and said "no, it's not that way". From what I understood, she was scouting the area, and Hughes knew she was assigned to that area. As you can see on his face, he doesn't know anything about her relationship with Roy nor anything, and I don't think he knows her name either.

Yayses!

It's nice to know what they're saying.

There was less in it than I'd hoped. I was sort of expecting a bit more than all of those cliffhangers. It seems like everyone got right to where they needed to be to say important stuff... and then didn't. Grrrr...

Ah, how Arakawa-sensei always makes us wait for the next chapter.

petite editio

^^Ick, isn't that a horrible amalgam of french and italian?

Yay, i've finished my own little scanlation. I'm not, of course, distributing it, because that would be THIEVERY, but solely using it for my own purposes.

The excercise was useful though. I noticed a lot more about the chapter... especially about Roy and Hughes. Roy makes an amusing comment... in a sick, twisted way.

Then, Roy and Riza seem to be conversing about Hawkeye-sensei. It's really going to be interesting to see their mini-flashback-within-a-flashback of what Hawkeye-sensei really was like. We only saw that little bit of him...

It's also apparent that, unlike some people thought, Hawkeye's 'ultimate alchemy' was not flame alchemy. Riza says that it would 'make a lot of people happy' and flame alchemy wouldn't do that- except, perhaps, if you had a special brigade of alchemists running around helping desperate housewives light their stoves and fireplaces.

That seems somewhat anticlimactic.

It's also interesting to see that Marcoh and Knox knew each other. Really, though, the most fascinating thing about the chapter is still seeing the stone being transmuted. It seems like that's how they'll transmute the stone in Amestris- if that's really what they want to do, which is at this point only speculation.

Meh, I don't know. I'm also interested to see Scar's brother use his arms.

One thing that deserves mention is a dying ishbalan saying 'so this is the alchemy you wanted... it kills people, not make them happy' or something to that effect. Scar's brother is probably more important in the Ishbalan community than we'd thought if the Ishbalan is actually talking about him... though, he might be talking to Roy, but I don't know why he would do that, it sounds personal.

Fascinating chapter.

The whole "Warrior Priest" thing is confusing the heck out of me. On one hand, we have Scar saying that alchemy is totally forbidden, and on the other hand, we have ScarBro saying alchemy can make the world a better place.

I would love to know how ScarBro managed to convince the people of Ishval not only to use alchemy, but to consider it holy. Remember the Ishvalians at the Xerxes ruins? I'm pretty sure they were ScarBro's chapter 58 groupies.
Ant
Since this chapter was a wider look at Ishval (as opposed to the perspectives of Riza and Marcoh, since they are the ones engaging in "Ishval" conversations), I'm interested to see what all Ed is being told by Riza, and Scar by Marcoh.

I'm assuming this will be addressed by the next chapter, but it appears as though 59 has a bunch of loose ends/cliffhangers that need tied up, and it wouldn't surprise me if the next couple of chapters are dedicated almost entirely to Ishval history.
Sahr Eth
Agreed, it would be interesting to see the differences (if any) in the manga version of Kimbly compared to the anime aswell.

I think the Ishvalan guy who is injured and laying on the ground saw Roy's glove, and from that he realized Roy was an alchemist, and says "(So, you're) an Alchemist. Is this how you (plural, as if talking to all State Alchemists) wish to use alchemy... not for (helping) people... "
But, before he finishes the sentense Roy burns him. sad.gif

Raw Japanese, or "untranslated."

^^Huh... that's really strange. The official timeline says that the Slicer brothers were sentenced to death four years before the outbreak of the massacre. Unless this is only a year prior to the current events, four years after the beginning of the massacre, there's a definite chronological screwup there. Marcoh and the Slicer brothers should never have even been in central at the same time...

Yeah, according to the timeline, Barry committed his last murder in 1911 and the Slicer brothers weren't executed until 1912. As has already been pointed out, this was at least 3 to 4 years after Marcoh should have been making the stones for use in Ishval, yet both of them were apparently present. The only mitigating argument would be to say, I guess, that those pieces of armor were at that time inhabited by different souls who had, in the meantime, been rejected by said armor. The notion that blood-seal armor existence is tenuous at best is pointed out by various characters throughout the manga, if I recall correctly most notably in response to either or both Greed/Ling, who were curious about such an existence as a means to attain immortality.

So, either Arakawa is showing us the transient lifespan (and perhaps tragically inevitable fate) of souls bonded to armor, or it was simply an oversight. Seeing as how Arakawa does not make such mistakes with any frequency, I am inclined to assume it was done for a reason. Unfortunately, only Arakawa knows the answer.
