@ EveningAlchemist- I LOVE your picture.
Winry's one of my favorite characters, she's really funny and yet she's got some of the saddest stories behind her character. She's well done as a character and enjoyable to watch...and she was hilarious in Chibi Party XD

Thank you very much.
I have found myself more interested in Winry's story lately. I can't believe I overlooked how sad it was! >.< It definitely parallels to Ed & Al's story in that regard. Her parents were amazing people as doctors in Ishval, and Winry followed in their footsteps well, even if they weren't around for most of her life. (This is in mangaverse)

OMGOMGOMG *saves*
That is SO so cute! I've ALWAYS wanted to see a scene where Winry and Mei are like sisters, and what more better than them making apple pie (for Ed and Al, I hope *giggle*)? And with Hohenheim, too!
(aww, I miss him D:)Arakawa-sensei's drawings are always so amazing. *sigh* I love how she draws girls. So simple but adorable and wonderful. :'D
(by the way, how you do get access to this kind of stuff? ^^')

The first version of FMA I ever watched was the first anime, and in that, I didn't really care for Winry at all. But once I started reading the manga once I had finished the anime... that changed pretty quickly.
Once really getting to see Winry's different levels portrayed in the manga, I started really getting to know her as a character. She wasn't just a mechanic who happened to be Ed's childhood friend; she was a real moral support system who played a much bigger influence in Ed's life as well as the story.

I agree. In the first anime I couldn't stand Winry. She annoyed me to no ends. Whenever she'd come onto the screen I'd just think to myself "Oh Jesus, it's THAT girl again." I felt like she didn't really have a point, and she just kind of angsted about Roy killing her parents. But she never even did anything about it.
But in the manga and Brotherhood, I absolutley loved her. She seemed strong and determined. And everything that happened between her and Scar was awesome, and of course, it was resolved. Oh and the relationship between her an Ed makes me squeal like the lame fangirl that I am! >///<
But yeah, she's like, my fourth favorite character now! =)

I totally know what you mean. It was so pointless that
Roy killed her parents, because nothing ever came from it. Nothing got resolved. Winry never moved on.
But in the manga when she finds out
Scar killed her parents, her confrontation with him made me change my view about Winry and made me see her in a new and powerful light. Winry's r
elationship with Scar is very interesting and it slowly helps her resolve all of the pain within her. It shows her real human emotions and makes her more of a likable character.

Not only that but she's also a really good support for Ed and Al. She pushes them to continue their research and try to get their bodies back. (And promises them apple pie too xD)
That's why I hate it when people say that they hate Winry. I mean, one of the reasons that the brothers are trying so hard to get their bodies back is because they have people they love waiting for them. I'm gonna assume that they mean Winry when they say this.

That's very true. Winry is an important factor in the brother's journey indirectly. She's always giving them the support and the home they need. I like the idea of the apple pie, too, because it has more depth to it than just being a food.
Dark-Winds
Jan 18 2011, 04:44 PM
Yeah, and you know, it gives Al something to look forward to when he gets his body back xD
I think it's really awesome how she doesn't cry until Ed and Al (Warning! Series Final spoilers under the spoiler tags!)get their bodies back.

Ohh I know! It's very meaningful that she makes a promise like that to Ed. It shows her strength and depth as a character, especially considering earlier on in the series she said that she cried because Ed and Al wouldn't.
Dark-Winds
Jan 18 2011, 04:52 PM
That's a really good point.
It showshow strong she is and that even though Ed and AL wont cry, neither will she, because she has a goal that has to be accomplished too. And that's making Ed's automail even better so that way he can continue to fight and help get his and AL's bodies back.
xUltimate_Shieldx
Jan 18 2011, 04:54 PM
Oh that's also a good point. It shows her growth and her new struggle, yet along with it she gains a new resolution and inspiration to reach a new goal. She grows because she realizes Ed and Al keep moving forward, and if she keeps looking back on the past, she'll be left behind.
Dark-Winds
Jan 18 2011, 05:00 PM
Yeah, and her goal makes her an even better and stronger character. It's like she knows that she has to help them, and that she's the closest thing that they have to family. And, I mean, Winry of all characters knows about the importance of family. I think that she's pretty symbolic of that.
xUltimate_Shieldx
Jan 18 2011, 05:03 PM
Totally. I mean, she is the "family with a home waiting" for the two brothers. It just shows she's there for them and plays a bigger role that you may not always be able to see concretely, but it's always there in the brother's hearts. For that she's a great character for them to always lean on.
Dark-Winds
Jan 18 2011, 05:06 PM
Yeah, I agree.
This is kind of off that tpoic, but I think my favorite scene with Winry in it is when she's about to shoot Scar. I thought it showed a really different side of Winry. And it also showed that even characters who are supposed to be completely innocent and nice can make a total 180 in a split second. And Winry is one of those people.
xUltimate_Shieldx
Jan 18 2011, 05:09 PM
Oh! That's my favorite scene with her too

It really captured my attention, because up until that point, Winry was just the nice mechanic who waited and gave support and love but now...
she becomes this person engulfed by sudden sadness and vengeance. I was so
taken back when I read it for the first time, but it definitely made me see her in a whole new light. Suddenly, she had layers and depth. She wasn't just this mechanic character anymore. She had become part of the true story.
Dark-Winds
Jan 18 2011, 05:13 PM
Saaame.
The first time I read that I was all like "Whao, Winry! Chill out, girl!"
But yeah, I agree that it totally showed a new side of her. It really had to make me think twice about her as a character.
xUltimate_Shieldx
Jan 18 2011, 05:17 PM
Yeah. From there she just had some sort of deeper meaning.
I'm just glad that through so much hardship she was able to find her happiness. I mean, she looked so joyful in that (Warning! Series Final spoilers under the spoiler tags!)picture of her married to Ed with their two children. I'm really happy she was able to have an end like that. It let's me feel assured that all of her pain wasn't for nothing.
Dark-Winds
Jan 18 2011, 05:20 PM
Yeah, and the Elric brothers too!
I'm glad that she was able to have a (Warning! Series Final spoilers under the spoiler tags!)happy ending because she really did deserve it. Especially after all she did to help Ed and Al throughout their journey on both a physical (Ed's automail) and psychological level. (Because she was like a family to them since they don't have one.)
xUltimate_Shieldx
Jan 18 2011, 05:24 PM
I know what you mean.
But you see, in the first anime, none of that happened. Winry a had sad ending. It's like, she didn't gain anything, she only lost. Ed and Al left her alone with her dog. Awesome.
In the manga you really did (Warning! Potential end of series spoilers ahead--->) feel satisfaction and elation upon reading the ending and just seeing those last couple of pages. It really warms your heart.
Dark-Winds
Jan 18 2011, 05:26 PM
Lol I actually got really teary eyed when I read the part with her and Ed at the train. Maybe it's just because I'm an Edwin fan girl lol but I also felt really happy for Winry, because I knew trhat she deserved it.
xUltimate_Shieldx
Jan 18 2011, 05:41 PM
No, it was very emotional
<Warning! Series Final Spoiler ahead!>It was a
good way to end the manga. You've been reading about these characters this whole time, watching them grow, watching them struggle and laugh and cry. The interaction between Winry and Ed at the end is a good way to let you know that they're story
for now is done, that they're struggling is over, and they're
about to start a new, happy life.
Dark-Winds
Jan 18 2011, 05:42 PM
Yeah ^___^
So it really was the perfect ending for Winry! (And Ed too)

While we're talking about favorite scenes with Winry...

I'd like to add that I especially like the train scene with her realizing that she loves Ed. It's not just this random development, it's been growing in her for years...and as she looks back, she finally sees the truth. What I like most about this, however, is that it's not your typical, "GASP! I'm...I'm in love with him -insert random shoujo bubbles and starry eyes-". It was a sweet moment without having a cliche--it's very realistic in that sense.
To explain it better, a quote from Dearheart42:
QUOTE
Look at the scene where she finally admits to herself that she loves Ed. Do you see any shojo-esque sparkles? Bubbles? Roses? Is Winry even blushing? No. It's a very quiet, thoughtful moment for her...and unlike other love-interest characters I've seen, she doesn't swoon over him or think about how attractive he is. Rather, she thinks about the journey, all the ups and downs they've gone through together and how much he's grown.

I'm such a sucker for Edwin xD
And I always have loved how it's not your typical girly "OMG I LOVE HIM!" shoujo way to big of a deal realization. I just loved how simple and sweet it was. And you're right. There was no cliche and I thought that was great because there always is.

Me, too.

(we're getting off-topic, but...)
Yes, I second that. It was developed way back from the beginning (come on, we knew that from like the first scene XD). And the relationship gradually grew into more than just friendship. It's simple yet effective. I hate the argument of "cliche" in EdWin, because there really isn't anything cliche about it besides the fact that they are childhood friends. Their relationship is presented in a very un-cliche way.
Winry's development is very clear in the manga, which I really like. You don't find many girls that have that much development in other animes...

(Warning! Series Final spoilers under the spoiler covers!)I totally agree with you. I loved the way that their relationship was presented. I also loved the way
that it ended. At first I was disappointed that they

Whats up people, I'm new and all that. And this shall be my first post.
I like both Ed and Winry. They are interesting and complex characters.
Everyone is about to throw stones at me, but I have a slight crush on Winry, which is weird because I never take anime or cartoons seriously. But yea, I am actually an Engineer myself, and if you guys know any girls who are obsessed with gears, transistors, microchips, robots and etc, email me her number.
I remember that scene in the original FMA in Rush Valley where some girl was excited about a huge diamond ring, and then they show Winry displaying the same level of excitement over the latest wrench, I was like, dang, can I marry you now?

I just wanted to say that. I am guilty. Sorry. So which way to the guillotine?
