Even for something to BE overrated, that band has to be popular in the first place. A Band who's debute album is amazing can't even BE overrated! And as for Led Zeppelin being overrated, that was the whole point of their fourth album. Critics were tossing out the 'overrated' card at them. They were saying that the only reason Zeppelin sold so much is because people would automatically buy ANYTHING with their name on it. So the band put out that album without their name, with no words at all on the album besides the names of the songs - and that album is one of the best selling albums of all time. It has 'Stairway' for christ's sake! - and that's definently not the only great song on that album.

Do you even know what the term 'overrated' means?

Pretty sure I do, why?
And like I said, for a band to be overrated (where everyone says they're great when they're really not), they have to be popular in the first place. A band that's not popular in the first place, that no one's heard of, can't be overrated. And in any case, saying something is overrated is the worst possible thing you'd could say in an argument. You say the stuff I like is overrated, and I say the stuff you like is overrated. It's all just a point of view and our own opinions. In fact, this whole damn argument is useless because it's all just opinions. The only thing I can say to support my side is that there is no debating that classic rock bands made a much bigger imprint on the world in their times than any band now adays.

@Popo: They are extremely overrated because 1) they're terrible. 2) they are extraordinarily popular, far beyond how much they should be. So I don't see how that is bad criticism if they are garnered far more glory than they should for being crappy. I agree that good bands can also be overrated (Beatles, Floyd, etc), but the matter is that some other bands (KISS) would be overrated even if they were only mildly popular.

@GREED: I am pretty sure that Oasis, Porcupine Tree and SGM were not influenced by bands like KISS and AC/DC.

I can sympathize that Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin are overrated, but I can't come anywhere near to agreeing that they were terrible. Oasis may not have been influenced by KISS or AC/DC, but they admit themselves that Rolling Stones were one of their muses. Let's not even get started about the amount of bands that were influenced by Zeppelin, not to say Rolling Stones didn't have a large effect on "modern" bands either.

When the term "modern" comes as a music term for me, I think more of alternative styles. Beginning with Pixies, Radiohead, and the Cure, and leading up to the army of The Strokes follower bands today. For classical music, I wouldn't put Guns N' Roses in the classic rock department. They emerged way past the age of classic rockers like Zeppelin, The Who, Floyd, etc. Classic rockers were the pioneers of their type of music, Guns N' Roses were more like the revival. Saying Guns N' Roses are classic rockers is like listening to Wolfmother and also calling them classic rock.

As for myself, I love classic artists as much as anyone, but I've fallen in love with fairly more recent alternative bands. Oasis, Radiohead, Arctic Monkeys, Smashing Pumpkins (excluding that new monstrosity of an album), Gorgol Bordello, Kings of Leon, and Beck are the types of bands that have stolen my heart.

I'm the type of person that if it's rock that sounds good, then I'm o.k. with it. I'm a huge Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Rush, and Black Sabbath fan, but I also enjoy Foo Fighters, Nickelback, and Breaking Benjamin fan. Every other band I like is considered, by everyone in the world and me, alternative and heavy metal. H.I.M., My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy, and Sixx:A.M. to name a few. XD
