Japanese movies, especially the latest ones, are coming with English subtitles, due to the big English market influencing the movie industry over there.
This means I can buy that movie since I have a no region DVD player... but I'll wait for the R1 since its:
1) Cheaper
and
2) I like the English dub.

I'm planning on getting the DVD at
Amazon.co.jp site. It says ¥7,140 on the page, but when I was checking the item on page before entering the credit information, it says the price is ¥6,800, which I find weird. Is this happening to anyone else? This is my first time ordering from the Japanese Amazon site. Also, anybody know the tariffs I'll have to pay when it reachs Canada?

There's no way I'm going to pay that much for a DVD, no matter how badly I want it! I'm on a poor unemployed student's budget! If I could wait three weeks longer then I had to to get the TV series DVDs (stupid Amazon), then I can wait for a year or so for this.

Japan has a Goods and Services Tax (?) that applies to its residents so when you buy it from overseas they will charge you at the tax free rate. Then once it reaches your country there might be import duties / taxes applied to it I am not too sure. For Australia anything arriving from overseas that's under $300 is considered a "gift" so it won't incur any taxes but best to ask your local post office for all the information

Before everyone and their brother (no pun intended) tries to order the DVD off amazon.co.jp or some such place, I think a disclaimer is in order. Even if it does have English subtitles, the movie will not be Region 1 encoded (which some other posters have mentioned but not made an explicit point of). Just to clear the air for any who might not know, that means that most of us won't be able to play the DVD unless we shell out the money to get a region-free DVD player. Also, I remember hearing (but I don't remember where) that computers, specifically Dells I believe, can change region somehow, but only a limited number of times.
I agree with Ladymercury--I'll wait for the online sub and/or Region 1 version of the movie. Of course, if you have friends with access to illegally burned copies of DVDs, which are region code free, well...you have more options.

I had an awful time finding a region coding disk or my Gamecube in the States (and ended up having a friend send me one from Korea), not that it can play DVDs. Hopefully the coding disks for Xboxes and PS2s are easier to find for everyone, but I honestly don't know anything about Xboxes and PS2s (obviously). It's fantastic if they can easily be converted. Xboxes do have a purpose....

And, about the region code thingy... I could be wrong, but if I'm correct, certain brands of DVD players sold in U.S., espicially the older models, play BOTH region 1 and region 2 DVDs. I think APEX is one of them.

I lie, I DO have it! I was going to order the special edition but only the film has subtitles and not the extras. Plus all those cards you can get will probably be sold seperatly.
So I bought a copy that just has the film (with subs of course). You see, I'm in region 2 and region 2 is what the film is sold in.

A friend of mine got the Limited Edition DVD set and we watched it at my house today. First off the packaging, as Huy has shown, is amazing and VERY hi-resolution in real life. The postcards that come with it are also really nice and glossy, which will make you feel like framing it! ^^
Now about the official english subtitles: The translations are SUPERB! I caught only 2 minor grammer mistakes. Overall you should buy the Limited Edition if you have the money; the extra's are really funny (It has Romi Paku, Rie Kugimiya, and others.)
Personally I plan on buying it soon because it's definatly a must have for any FMA fan.

Woooo, packing looks spiffy. The Japanese sure do know how to market their products.
Brutally expensive though, no way I can afford it. So I guess I will wait for the location version to come out. I'm not dying to get it anyway (don't like the movie but I digress). The extras are nice but I can't justfy spending the $$. I do want the bonus features but if they are not translated or have subs then there's not too much point. Hopefully the North American version will include those as well.

i can't wait to buy the Hong Kong version of this dvd. i just hope AVP (Asia Video Productions) will include most of these special features subbed in Chinese. then, it'll all come down to waiting for the American dvd release. but as expected, i doubt the packaging will look as attractive as the japanese dvd.
there is no market for flashy packaging in North America, which is why i usually import.
but AVP....i dunno....very doubtful. their release of "Z Gundam" movie was barebones. (but it does include DTS)

That makes me wonder what the heck I bought. I thought the subtitles were among the worst I'd ever seen. I still barely have any clue as to what was going on. I bought it at an Anime store so it should have been the official release. Oh wait, you got the limited edition. I got the regular one. THAT'S the problem!

Feb 14 2006, 06:29 PM

Feb 14 2006, 09:43 PM
Yea you gotta be careful, the quality of the packaging of bootlegs nowadays are stunningly good, sometimes you can't tell it apart from the real thing until you've smacked the $$ down for it, opened it up and popped it into your DVD player.
Jedi28
Feb 14 2006, 10:23 PM
Exactly. It looked exactly like any other DVD you would buy. Well at least now I know and won't make that same mistake again. I thought if they sold it in a legitimate store then it had to be legitimate but I guess I know better now. I was wondering why everyone kept saying the subs were so good when they made not a lick of sense to me.

The version I got only cost twenty dollars but I guess you get what you pay for. I thought that was cheap (Anime usually costs more) but it was the price of an average non-Anime movie so I thought it was legit. From now on I'm just going to wait for the official English release version. That way I'll know it's not bootleg and won't be wasting my money. I actually wonder if the whole movie is on there. It didn't feel like one hour and forty-five minutes and I've seen posts talking about stuff that I never saw in the movie. For instance
a scene at the end where Ed lifts his arm and it turns into automail (imaginary or real, whatever)? I've also seen a banner that showed Ed hugging human Al which I couldn't believe didn't happen in the movie when I saw it. They'd been separated two years and Ed hadn't seen Al in his human form for five or six years and he couldn't even hug him? But that could have just been a banner that somebody created and it looked really good. At least I've got an idea of what happened and I'll get to see it next year when the English version gets released.
Winkle
Feb 15 2006, 11:23 AM
Well I checked the prices, and the special edition with the english subtitles (for the movie only, not including the bonus features) costs over $100 Canadian since they have to import it and I really don't have that kind of cash avaliable.
I don't recall Ed and Al ever hugging in the movie, except that brief scene when Ed was captured by the Thules the first time, and he dives into the pile of armour to evade Rudolf Hess, and he runs into one of the armour that Al had attached part of his soul to, and Al sees him and hugs him before they make their escape.
I don't know where you've been looking, but I ordered it from Amazon Japan and it didn't even come close to $100. I got charged about $77 Canadian, and they didn't even charge me customs, but if they were, it probably total up to be about $90. And that's just the special edition.
The regular edition is only 3,192 Yen at Amazon Japan, which converts to about $31 Canadian. Add in shipping and customs, the price would be only around $45.
Also, there are only two editions of the movie. The Special Edition, which contains Japanese and English subtitles, collectors cards, 3 DVDs and a book; and the Regular Edition, which is just the DVD with only Japanese subtitles. What you've mentioned, a special edition with english subtitles with no bonus features does not exist. If it does, then it's a bootleg and it's ripping you off good it's over $100.
