FMA! Definetly! But there are some others I watched and liked:

Elfen Lied - Kinda dark, brutal and sometimes depressing, but a very good anime imo.
Chobits - Funny and interesting, although the last part was not that funny, but still nice.
Death Note - Very dark and brutal sometimes, but I liked it
Bleach - A nice series, but has very many episodes so I paused watching it, I watched Death Note
instead, I'm not quite sure if I return to this.
Green Green - Although I'm not finished watching it, I think it is very funny and I'll definetly finish
it

but I am still searching for an anime as great as FMA...but I am not sure if one exists

I've only seen six episodes, but it's been amazing. It has all the qualities that made FMA a fantastic show - an actually interesting storyline, lovable characters, its hilarious, great action sequences... holy crap, all the fight scenes are totally epic XD *drools*

Now I also add Fate/Stay Night, Gakuen Alice, Gun X Sword and Jigoku Shoujo. And Inuyasha, even though I haven't seen all the episodes...I only watched all the movies. And Saiunkoku Monogatari, still on episode 6 but loving it so far.

Fullmetal Alchemist, Gunslinger Girl and Haibane Renmei were good. I also enjoyed Saikano but at times Chise was kinda pathetic... Fushigi Yugi was quite good too. I read the manga and finished it and only watched 13 episodes mind, but the story's the same and there are the same comical moments. Ooh, and Chrono Crusade was very good too!

What about movies... well, Appleseed (the new one) rocked! And the Cowboy Beebop movie has to be one of my favourite movies. The FMA movie was great too, of course. And most of the Studio Ghibli ones. Place Promised and Voices of a Distant Star!! <3 I love too many. =]
