Chapter One
Lust smiled as she listened to Ed’s cry of despair.
“Well. That’s the last of Greed. If we’re lucky, and I’m sure we are, we’ll never see him or anyone like him ever again. Come Gluttony.” The fat Homunculi licked his lips and followed his beloved mistress as she went further into the woods. Now there were only six Homunculi. And the way Gluttony saw it, that was fine.
-Elsewhere-
A small girl, not older than twelve, sat back and looked at her transmutation circle. In the center was a body wrapped in black. There were organs around it, wrapped in the same cloth. The girl pushed her red hair away from her face and stood. The overly large T-shirt she wore brushed her knees and made her shiver a bit. She pulled a large jar of red liquid out from a corner. The liquid sloshed around and a bit spilled on her. She cursed a bit, but shook it off. It wasn’t that much. Dragging it to the body, she poured it on top of the body. The black cloth didn’t show the red much, and a small pool of the liquid formed around the ingredients.
“Don’t worry Rowan. I’ll bring you back. I won’t let you die.” Putting the jar down, the girl knelt down and placed both hands on the edge of the circle. She closed her eyes and let the alchemic energy she possessed flow through the circle. It glowed purple, then green, and finally blue. The black cloth shifted and molded around the body in crude clothes. The organs shimmered and then fused into the body. The skin soaked up the blood the girl had poured on it. The corpse began to take more form and the bones began to fit into place, fixing themselves with inhuman sounds. Twin blue eyes opened and rolled in their sockets. Then the circle became red. Black lightning struck around the body and even struck the girl. She bit her lip to stop from screaming, her blood rolling down her chin. It dripped onto the circle and went to the body in the center. Then small black hands came and grasped the girls’ arms, pulling it off, dissolving it. The girl almost pulled away, but she saw the boy in the middle of the circle. His blue eyes stared into her own.
“Rowan…if giving up my arm means getting you back…” The girl reached up and grasped her shoulder. It was already loose and bleeding from the hands that had been pulling.
“I’ll give it to you.” She jammed her fingers into her shoulder, screaming in pain. She nearly withdrew, but she quickly tore through the tissue that was holding on her arm and snapped the bone off. Blood poured from the wound, staining her shirt. A voice entered the girl’s mind before she passed out.
What would you give to bring him back?
The girl awoke to find herself in front of two, huge doors. In the center was an eye and just by looking at it, the girl could tell it was powerful. Next to the girl laid her arm, the very one she tore from her own body. Gasping in pain, the girl sat up and clutched her arm. Suddenly, the gates opened and several eyes peered out, almost looking into the girls’ soul. A figure appeared in front of the girl, a tall man, in his early twenties. He had long brown hair and glazed, dead eyes. The girl reached for him, blood on her fingers.
“Rowan…”
What do you give for him?
Swallowing her pain, the girl grasped her arm and held it to the Gate.
This is not enough.
“I’ll give anything. I’ll give my own life for him”
No. This is not enough. But you have sacrificed others. And they combined are enough of a sacrifice. Take your brother. He is yours.
“Wait! Please! I have his appearance, but I want my brother! I want his memories, his personality, I want him!”
What we give you is all your brother is. Before his death. He is all in what we give you. Now take him and leave. He is yours.
Tears flowed from the girl’s eyes as the Gate took her arm from her. Rowan disappeared, returning down the path to her world. Darkness swallowed her vision and she sank into oblivion. When she opened her eyes, she was back in her house. She sat up, her eyes full of hope.
“R-Rowan?”
“…Sarafine…” Joy coursed through the girl and she began to cry again. She crawled forward, the place where her left arm once was bleeding heavily. She reached her brother to find he was exactly as she remembered him. His eyes went to Sarafine’s wound and they grew worried.
“Sarafine, your arm…”
“I don’t care. I have you back. That’s all that matters.”
Sarafine collapsed into her brother’s arms and closed her eyes, listening to his heartbeat.
My brother…I have you back…I finally have you back.
