I just re-read my last post, and I think I can summarize for those who didn't want to read the big long half-essay. Though to start with, just hypothesize for argument's sake that spirtual matter does exist (i.e. Human Soul, magical energy, chi, whatever you want to call it). My explanation won't make much sense from the perspective of one who rejects all such theories. Those of you who already believe in such things should have no trouble. My own beliefs shall remain, for now, neutral as that of the scientist.

Basically I was saying that Alchemy, in real life, is a practice of meditation which, depending on your own personal beliefs and definitions, could be considered a kind of magic. It's similar to the manipulation of spiritual energy in Tai Chi.

In Hagaren however, Alchemy is an extrapolated and fantasized version of this. There isn't any reason not to call it magic, except for the fact that in the story itself, the characters consider it a science. I believe the only reason they classify it such, is because of how well documented and predictable the outcomes are. I think this is a failry accurate representation of what would happen in our own societies, if "magic" were to become widely accepted and researched. I even think that the creators of the series went out of their way to show the audience in the end that Alchemy is indeed a magical practice, having parallels in our world to what most would consider "magic."

Now for what I believe, because I think I can clarify slightly for those 'scientists' out there. I myself believe that there are unexplored spectrums of existence, and unclassified forms of matter. Things which bear no resemblance to anything we've yet studied or classified in "science." For me, this bears no difference from earlier periods of history in which we knew less of the physical world. Molecules and DNA were not "invented," they were discovered. I feel that practices which have been considered "magic" up to this point in human development may someday be studied and documented. Exiting the realm of myth and mystery to be understood fully.
It always seemed to me that Hagaren's "alchemy" was based on a similar notion of the yet undiscovered truth of reality. Much like any good science-fiction story it says "What if science were advanced to such-and-such a point? How would the world be then?" It then goes an extra step of not ruling out magic as a possible scientific avenue.

Okay I'm done. Sorry I make these things so long...I don't mean to, honest! I just want to make sure I'm clear, that's all. If you have the patience to read this one, then I thank you deeply. I did put a lot of thought into it after all.

Too short It just came into my mind that Alchemy as it is considered now only exists since we knew the difference between chemistry and alchemy, the possible and the impossible. Thus, since the time where chemistry developped as a true science. We can split atoms and put them toghether, but we can't turn lead into gold...

The funny thing is that alchemy is the predecessor to chemistry. There was alchemy which was a study of matter and chemical reactions in the search for the underlying truths of God. Alchemy made so many advances in the yet-unborn field of chemistry that for a time they were considered the same thing. Isaac Newton is one of the most famous physicists in history, and yet he wrote several papers on his "alchemical" experiments.
Many noted chemists who lived during this time were considered chemists or alchemists interchangeably. Then the scientific revolution happened.
After that, all the chemists regarded alchemy with disdain befitting a defunct and largely faulty system (from this alchemy has evolved into what I've described in former posts).

The reason I said "the funny thing is that alchemy is the predecessor to chemistry," is that we now hold near the amount of control over the elements with modern physical science that alchemy promsed but failed to deliver. And yet most consider alchemy madness. Bah, I say. Semantics.

Oooh... so I got your point! I'm soo glad! (science is a difficult thing for me to understand). Alchemy= chemistry, yeah I heard that before somewhere before. Alchemy probably lost it's significance when chemistry developed further.
And yes... we should work together... but then again, when people feel a bit bored... Well...it's probably a good idea to practice abilities through mock fighting... might be fun(so long as no one gets seriously hurt or dies or something).

Precisely. You understand quite well, actually. Although it didn't get totally forgotten - it's just now a fringe "religion." Like Druidic Pagans or their far more recent (and popular) counterpart, Wiccans. Only even less widely spread. There are still people who practice something they call "Alchemy." I just doubt that it would be terribly recognizeable to the layman.

And I'm not certain what the connection is, but there seems to be some relationship between the Hermetic Arts and Zoroastrianism. But I know so little of Zoroaster and his philosophies that I'm not fit to judge whether it's a religion of worship, or a set of magical theory and ritual (like Wicca or Golden Dawn).
