Ok just post what viruses you have had in the past and what you can do to get rid of them or help not get them in the first place.

I've gotten this virus named "Spy Sherrif" recently. I guess the only thing I can recommend is having a virus scanning program like McAfee.

There is a warm spreading right now, called "Sober-X."
It ususally comes in disguised as e-mail from FBI, CIA, etc, telling that they discovered that you had visited illigal website recently, and tells you to answer some questions.
Then, once you open the attachment, it disables your computer's firewalls and other security pograms, and install programs that prevent you from security program websites, so you can't even get the fix/patch from these sites to get rid of the warm.
Really nasty stuff, IMO (so far I have been careful. and lucky, and knocking on the woods.)

I have Norton and it's pretty good. But if you want a site that can give you information on viruses and how to delete them :Symantec
The site is great. It's updated frequently and gives you a crapload of information. The best thing is, you don't have to have Norton to download virus removal tools.

General rule is don't open any attachment you don't recognize, no matter how tempting, of course. If you've already done that, then here's a site for y'all...
Gibson Research LabsThis is one of the best sites I've ever found on the subject. Good thing is, most of their programs are written in binary code, making them very small and quick to download, plus most are free. Try running their 'Shields-up' program first to see how reliable the protection you currently have is before you start to panic. Also, check their news section for info on all thing computer related. These guys truly know their stuff!

But seriously, I do not open attachment any more, unless, I know that person is supposed to send me something in the attachment, and I've been expecting that email to come wth some attachment. It's yicky, but to me it's better than cleaning up the infection mess.
Anyway, I totally hate computer viruses, and anyone who create them!!
The thought of someone invading and taking control of my computer without my permission makes me feel so violated!! Grrrr!!

For virus saftey I recomend McAfee. It sved my computer more than a thousand times over. It also has links to sites that tells you exactly what viruses are out there and how to avoid them. Another tip is never open email that you don't know who its from. Oh and whatch out for a virus thats been out recently. I don't know whats it's called but it gets into your computer and continuly restart it. Its a nasty one.

It's impossible for me to not get a virus on my computer. I download a lot of subs and songs using Limewire, and yes I know it's bad but, my friend takes the viruses off for me.
One time, I got a messenger virus.
What It Does To Your Computer
1. Sends out IMs to EVERYONE on your AIM buddy list every 10-15 minutes or so saying the same thing like "Click here, its this you?" and it has a link at the bottom, and you can't prevent it from happening either.
2. It makes your Antivirus program go hawire (in my case, it was Norton)
3. You get a billion popups that you can't get rid off simply by clicking the little "X" at the top.
How You Get It
4. Opening a link a friend sent to you (chances are, he/she might have the virus and he didn't mean to send you constan IMs, see #1)
5. When you open the link, a screen comes up and says "Do you wish to download this or save it to your computer?" or something like that. well, DON'T CLICK ANY OF IT. I was dumb enough to save it to my computer so I got the virus and it screwed up my computer for like nearly 3 weeks
How To Get Rid of It
What i did was using an antivirus program (not Norton) and did constant scans to remove the virus. Even if it shows that there are no threats, I did the scans repeatedly day after day, and eventually, the virus got off of my computer.

the way i read it is....
"It's impossible for me to not get a virus on my computer."
double negative hence it's impossible for that person to have a clean computer....don't know if that was the intended meaning though.
firewalls aren't all that great. It won't save you from exploits based on websites or stored in local files.
step 1) make sure you update your os of choice.
step 2) have one of the popular virus scanners (mccaffe/norton) with updated
step 3) operate your computer in a non-administrator setting
step 4) common sense?
step 5) (if it helps you sleep at night) a firewall

I once got a computer virus.
I was searching for FMA pictures, I clicked on a link and it led me to a porn site. It wouldn't let me get out, so I restarted my computer. Well, the site was gone, but I got over 150 popups, so I got my dad to help me since he's an expert on computers. We finally got Norton or something that stopped the popups, but can that be considered a virus?
Chiyo
Nov 5 2006, 09:56 AM
No because popups don't infect your computer as such, they can just be persistant. I get a popup asking me if I want my computer checked and even when I click no it takes me to the site to double check I said no. Then I have to close all windows to start again.

I had the Trojan, Surabaya, many many worms and Trojan Horse.
Here are Effective antiviruses
1. Avast Home Edition
2. Norton (Needs to get updated)
3. Avira (Needs to get updated)
If it is way too late you can reformat the hard drive of your computer and just suffer from the loss of all your files.

Get Linux, nobody makes viruses for that!
...Sorry. Shutting up the crazy CS major part for now.
Linux (and Macintosh) systems are generally a lot safer from viruses. For one, fewer people use them, so there's less of a benefit for people to make viruses for them. Also, the operating systems are written more securely than Windows. You should still get antivirus software, though.
Other than that, good antivirus software will usually protect you, so long as you use common sense on the internet.
I'd also recommend using snopes.com to see if a virus you've been hearing about is real; sometimes scares go around for silly reasons, and sometimes they're true.

reason why macs are "safer" is because there are not many mac viruses out in the world.
but there will be soon
Katya Martin
Jan 25 2010, 04:30 PM
Well, no, not really.
As of last year, there were only two worms affecting the latest Mac operating system, and no viruses. It's not that nobody writes them; people try to write them, but they just don't get in.
The the reason that Macs are safer is that the operating system's based on Unix, which is more secure to begin with (Unix is, among other things, the base of many operating systems used by government, military, and financial institutions... so yeah). Also, with a Mac, Apple produces everything, and so the main antivirus is written by people who know every little weakness that the operating system might have. They can't cover everything, which is why you still see antivirus software for Macs, but they can do a pretty good job.
Mind, I'm a Windows/Linux user, not a raving Mac fan; that's just a computer science student's observations from the actual science end of things. Windows is getting a lot better about things, and Linux (also Unix-based) ranges from secure to "why would you possibly need that much security?"
Of course, once again, no matter what you're running, if you aren't minding where you click or what you open on the Internet, you can screw yourself over horribly. A good browser (um, Firefox) can prevent a little of that, but a lot of the people writing these things are relying on users to be idiots.
