I didn't like the ending; it left me unsatisfied and a little depressed; I'm tired of my favorite shows doing that. Even though it wasn't supposed to be perfect ("Life isn't perfect" was very much a theme of the show, and was said several times in the last episode), I still reallly really wanted it to end with them in their world together and with body (

). Arakawa-sensei talked about how, while they burned down their house, they still had a home (and family) to return to. What's with them not returning "home"? I admit, however, that I liked how Ed finally came to connect and care about tech-world, our world, which gives it credit as being just as interesting and real and worthy as alch-world. But still, even though "they're the same," the people and memories are not. I want Ed and Al to be with alch-world Winry (among others) - the girl with whom they share so many memories - the tech-world Winry is not going to be the same as their Winry because she grew up in a different world and had different experiences.
Yeah, it could have been worse - a lot worse. And the two Elric brothers were together and Al got his body and even as an added bonus his memories, which is all great, but what about Winry (to bring her up again)? She's family too. And now she, whose whole life seems to revolve around those two, will never see them again. That's depressing. And there's more than one way they could have closed the gates without leaving (the best one was described earlier with Al transmuting a piece of his soul into a suit of armor); the fact that they did it that way annoys me because I think one or both of them might have thought of something (ie. "Nii-san, don't! Let me! I can..."), especially since Ed was so keen on getting home. That ending just felt...contrived. Believeable, but contrived (is that an oxymoron?).
In the end, I know it's one of those stories that portrays "real life" with all its unfairness and sorrow in addition to the love and humor, but because it
isn't real life (this isn't a documentary or anything ^o^) and because there
are times when things really work out in the best way. . . Well, because of all they've been through, it just makes you want it more. We (generally) like to see things work out, the hero win, and all that. Personally, I love inspiring stories. I know many many don't "make it", but that's why I love to see the ones who do, the ones who actually achieve their dreams and end up "the way it's supposed to be". We just shouldn't have to search or try hard to be happy with the ending. (Although I am glad there was an ending with the two of them together, unlike Ep 51).
And for anyone who thinks "that's it" plotwise, there's still room for the gates to be opened again.
P.S. Sorry for the long post. And yeah, I was hoping for some royai too.
