God, I hate that word 'nice'. It's so nondescript. I have no clue what kind of characteristics you're looking for in a character to fit this thread.

Tohru Honda manages to still have compassion and understanding for people even after they try to physicaly and mentaly harm (Mostly Akito) her and people close to her, while actually helping the offender by "healing what's aflicting them", so to speak. Some might consider her attitude to be down right stupid and weak, but many others after reading or watching Fruits Basket come to feel that Tohru's deep understanding for others is indeed strength. Tohru's compassion seems endless, thus she is often thought of as the "nicest" Anime character.

Some characters are so nice they're scaring me and make me feel like the devil itself...

Beside Tohru, there's maybe Yugi from Yugioh or Miki Kaoru from SKU (Though we can see he isn't
so nice during some moments in the anime.)

I've seen a lot of Tohru hate, it's almost scary. She is a... pretty close to perfect person, but she's not so perfect that she's inhuman. If anything, she's a character I can relate to a lot wherein she takes so much blame upon herself that it gets to the point of being almost physically overwhelming. (Ritsu also comes to mind in that aspect, except he gets... insanely violent when it comes to his uber self-hate) I don't think I would give the label doormat so easily; She's a lot smarter than people give her credit for, and she knows what she's taking on when she seems to be going all wibbly and submissive. Her polite exterior serves like a clever facade for when she gets to the point of reaching into another person's core emotional traumas and whipping out the proverbial katanas. If she had been a typical tempramental anime heroine; acting sweet only some of the time, and then turning bratty/violent at the drop of the hat, I don't think she could have had the effect on people that she did. For example, Kyou. He keeps everyone away from himself, and I think if she were standardly selfish and defensive, he would have blown her off and never have accepted her helping advances, but I think her bizzarely innocent exterior intrigued him, confused him, and ultimately lowered his defenses for once.

Well, personnally, I don't hate Tohru, far from here

I only read the first volume of the manga so I can't really have a real opinion yet but it really impressed me how sweet and nice and already so much in fusion she was with Kyo and Yuki. I shouldn't have been surprised even if I don't read that sort of manga often.

I agree, Toby-Chan. Branding someone who stands up for them selves, even if it is not necessarily in the most 'peacefull' fashion, an a** hole is a bit extreme. However, I don't agree that Tohru Honda is a "doormat". Though she does let people walk all over her at times, when it comes to really important matters she generaly finds a way to handle them in the best way possible. Where many people would thrash out at the people who were offending them or the people they cared about, Tohru usually finds some way to put an end to the problem by actually helping not only herself or her loved ones, but also the offender.

This is kinda turning into a Tohru thread. But she is cool; I admire her a lot. I'd love to be more like her. Or Hana-chan... Or Tohru and Hana-chan's future lesbian love-child. (Impossible, but if you think of it, they'd have awesome kids...)
*Ahem* Moving on...
Belldandy from Ah My Goddess, is *extremely* nice, borderlining Mary-Sue in most respects. I like her too, although until I watched the movie, there jsut wasn't all that much about her that I found exceptional; she seemed way too perfect, almost flat. Then, of course, the movie proved that to be absolutely not true. o.O
There is no such thing as perfect. It makes your head hurt if you try to thinkn about it too much. Everything has some sort of flaw. This includes our lovely Tohru. She's nice and all, but her niceness makes me itch to do horrible, horrible things and do horrible things to her. Besides, nice is not very descriptive. If by nice, you mean someone who helps others for no reason, is polite and says nice things about people, that would be Tohru. Nice could also mean people who influence others to help other people. This would not be Tohru. As said before, she makes me want to kill someone. This is not generally considered nice. In my opinion, the nicest anime character I can think of is Sesshomaru. Or Naraku. Don't get me started on why.

She makes you want to kill someone because she has ovaries, dear. And what do you mean that Tohru dosen't influence others to help other people. Crap, the whole show is about how one person through patience and love can influence the lives of so many other people. Some of those characters come off as complete jerks, but by her acceptence, can soften, and change because of the faith she has in them. The Sohmas are a huge dysfuntional nightmare, but she influences them slowly but surely to come together and face their problems. What part of that isn't nice?
Oh, is it that you like Kyon-kyon when he's being a bratty low self-esteem a**hole, and you're upset when he opens up and becomes emotionally honest under her influence? Yes, bad Tohru for helping a lonely mixed up teenager. Bad, bad Tohru.QUOTE

Is it perhaps for the above reason you stated that they (By ways of being twisted psychotic bastards) influence others to help eachother due to the hardship they face? Then, by that logic, a ruthless genocidal dictator is really nice too, because his sadistic megalomaniacal actions drive people to band together and help each other in the face of adversity. Okay. Yeah. Sure.

Hmm... yeah... "Nice" can be taken in so many ways and I'm sure that there are many nice characters in many series...
Well as alrady mentioned Tohru Honda, definitely... others:
Kisa Sohma (Fruits Basket)
Haku (Naruto).. His character really touched me...
Choutarou Ootori (Prince of Tennis)
Yugi Mutou (Yu-gi-oh!)
Ryo Bakura (Yu-gi-oh!)
Hikari Yagami (Digimon Adventure)
Yukito Tsukishiro (Card Captor Sakura)
Tomoyo Daidouji (Card Captor Sakura)
Rin (Inu Yasha)
Kohaku (Wish)
Hisui (Wish)
Really... there are so many characters that could be considered nice and almost everyone is and can be nice in their own way.(and I know I've forgotten some).. I suppose it's just that with some it's maybe more striking than with others and usually those people are probably more the type to think only about others, which turns out to bring trouble/discomfort to themselves....
