Well, I'm a new Anime fan, so I'll admit that I was pretty blind to what real Anime is. I only thought of Pokemon and such when Anime was mentioned. Then my friend showed me FMA and I realized how wrong I was, lol .

I hate to say it, but I used to avoid anime because of the fans. Back about five years ago, every anime fan I knew was either a big, smelly, stereotypical otaku, or some pot-smoking weirdo. The anime itself looked cute, but the kind of people who liked it made me a little wary of it. But then, I got into it anyway, went to college, and found some fellow-fans who weren't creepy (and who didn't smell bad.)

Pft, glad it works with your friends. Mine are all like "No! I don't want to be an anime-freak like you! *laughs* " They can be so obnoxious.

I suggest you keep at it though! This happens to me sometimes and than I keep trying! wow, if ya think about I can be annoying!

Now back on topic, sorry if this was already said, but someone says they don't like it because it's backwards(manga). backwards? how the hell does that effect the quaility. It's not even backwards, it's just in Japanese format!

There's one friend of mine, she doesn't like Anime but she likes Clay Aiken. In fact, she doesn't like anything about Japanese stuff, except for the sushi. So we used to have this Clay-Anime war. Turns out really funny

I have friend who told a group of us (were on an FMA converting spree) that she would rather read because anime is nothing more than a stupid cartoon and she would prefer to be literate. And yet, she watches Spongebob (uh--we do too, so this isn't an attack on SB)! So, her bf (who was with us) offered her a compromise....she could watch anime with us...and he would turn the subtitles on so that she could read too and we would ALL be happy.

Ummm...it didn't work.

And then there is the usual...it's lame, it's just a cartoon (*gasp*), you know the excuses....there are a plethura of them. What's wrong with these people?? But I agree with the general consensus that if half the anime haters would actually take the time to watch some of the good stuff, then maybe they would stop being sooo stereotypical.

yeah no kidding, i was lucky enough to be introed to anime just before i was sent to a school were a bunch of kids already read manga

I think the immediate turn-off, and the most common reason people dislike anime is because of Kodomo or children's anime. Shows such as Hamtaro, Pokémon, and Yu-Gi-Oh give bad first impressions. People become prejudice against anime, and give into the idea that Kodomo is the only type of anime there is; even though there are so many genres they’ve never experienced. Such as: mecha, shōjo, shōnen and nameless others...

@animefangirl- i turned two or three of my friends into anime lovers buy dragging them into it kickin and screamin, either by handing them a Manga and forceing them to read it or by forceing them to either watch some baby show that's really annoying or anime

Yeah, that was exactly what one in my class said to me and my friends who watch Anime: "Anime is for kids", and I did answer exactly as you did: "Elfen Lied is really for kids!". He's the who watches cartoons for kids! He watches Jimmy Neutron I asked him why he thinks Anime is for kids when he watch Jimmy Neutron and that Spongebob Square-something. He answered:"I watch it because it's fun"..... And also, I've met people who says that Pokémon and Yu-Gi-Oh are bad and I think that too but Anime like Bleach, FMA, Naruto or Elfen Lied are not the same things FFS!

I have a friend who thinks manga and anime is tempting me. She says FMA is evil and how it will affect me and cause me to become some kind of freak. She told me a message on how those circles in FMA is devil like and it's a Jewish star. She also gave me a book about kids writing about their problems and solutions. One of them, she pointed out, was a writing about how a girl who luved animes, relized this was affecting her and ruining her life, and forced herself to end it and became right whateva. She's talking like animes and mangas are some kind of drugs or some sort... she doesn't relize however that animes helped me keep up with my native langugage (foreign language translated mangas) and that it helped me learn more about computers and internets.

Another, there is this girl who hates mangas b/c it came from Japan, (same as japaneseobesession-san) and that the mangakas stole ideas about the manga story from other people by giving them money. simple thought - (OH HOW I WANTED TO CHOKE HER NECK!!!!!!!)

Hmm, well, to the 'normal' viewer, technically we are a little bit too old to be watching cartoons, and sometimes, I'll sit back in my living room watching some anime and say ' wow, I can't believe I like this show and how old am I? '

So yeah, I laugh it off when someone downs my hobbies. Sometimes I laugh with Trekkies and Starwars fans make fun of anime, but I look at myself and say " I shouldn't be pointing fingers considering I probably think that their favorite band or show or movie or whatever is pure crap ".

that pokemon and yugioh comment is really typicl these days and ive heard it from kids as well as aduts so many times it isrnt even funny anymore,i mean poeple who doont live in asian-american communities dont know about it,i never knew what anime was until last year (i went to a elementry school in a russian speaking community were nobody knew what it was ,however in my middle school evryone heard or knows about anime) ,however ive always preffered anime over any thing else

The people I know can't get past the fact that its a 'cartoon.' Never mind that adults write, create, design and market this stuff and make a ton of money - 'Its for kids!' That's what pisses me off. They never even try to give it a chance. The huge eyes or color of eyes and hair, there's always some reason.

I always think it's kind of cute when people mispronounce the names. Hey, sometimes I can't remember japanese names either. For instance, I don't think this one friend of mine has ever pronounced Inuyasha right. He's always like Inoshoya, Ishinayu, Ina--something. Closest he's ever gotten is Inayashu.

My mom's always getting all confused over it, too. One time she picked up my little Ichigo (Bleach) keychain and said "Who is this now? Edwin?" I guess she was thinking of Ed and Winry from FMA, since I have keychains of them too, but who knows.

Arg, the most I've heard is, "Cause it's a cartoon."

There is no real reason to dislike anime just like here is no reason to dislike Black and White films. it's a style that comes down to personal prefrences.

To the uninitated anime can be very hectic and outlandish. Remember that when most people see animated owrk they think of Disney and Wonder bros. They don't expect to see charcters dieing or having deep philisophical overtones.
Compare the latest Disney animation to princess Mononoke and see the diffrence.

Thats why people don't like anime. It requires you to think.

Most anime films do require more attention and thought than most Disney flims though.
Comparing Anime to Western 'toons is like comparing Fantasy films to Mystery films. Both are good for diffrent reasons. Neither is better.
