My music humanities teacher was really hyper: First, he asked about everyone's background, and no matter how obscure that person's history was he somehow was familiar with their culture, studied something related to the student's study, or had been to wherever they were from. Considering how young he is, that's pretty amazing.
Example: Student says he's studying astrophysics and was born in China
Teacher's response: :::Begin's randomly speaking Chinese:::
Then he goes on to talk about a modern composer symposium he went to in Germany which was right across from another event related to astrophysics

ugh, school was awful. did crappy on my calc and physics finals, okay on lang, fine on japanese and econ. but it was really miserable watching ray at school (he's tammy's boyfriend). his eyes are red from crying so much, and his friends don't know what to do because he won't talk or eat or anything. jeanette looks okay, but she's suffering pretty badly too. it's hard seeing such happy people so depressed, and i don't know what to do for either of them. i feel so useless.

My experience working with people who have had crisis and/or have become depressed for some reason and my own personal experience with crisis/bad feelings tells me that the best thing anyone can do is to be available and acknowledge that they hurt. One part of what makes inner pain hard is the feeling that people expect you to "just get over it" and stop feeling that way.
Anyway, I don't know anything about the situation and I don't need to know about it. When my wife had her miscarriage, people constantly said the, "oh, you're young, you can try again" I nearly punched one person for that. ^I don't knwo about that. it just depends on the person you're dealing with and you should just act accordingly. An example is someone who just want to be totally left alone, she know the words you offer her are only for consolation and she doesn't need your pity, it just gets her more irritated. What she prefers is for you to just sit with her quietly. And it's funny, i think we've gotten more done without words.
