Well, an ongoing theme in the class is "growing up", and what the stories say about this issue that everyone has to deal with--unless you're Peter Pan. We talked a lot about what kind of character Peter is and what his role is in the grand scheme of things: is he the embodiment of the inner child that never wants to grow up? The narrator says he's a paradox--in what way? What's his relationship with the Lost Boys, Wendy, the Darlings, Hook, etc., and how do they fit in with the images of "childhood" that Barrie sets up in Neverland?

This feels like a wonderful class, based on the questions being asked. How many people contribute to discussions?

Along with Peter Pan, we also read an article that focuses on gender roles in the story, so we touched on Wendy's role of the make-believe mother, always keeping house rather than joining in on the adventures. The article suggests that there's a clear division between what boys and girls do when playing make-believe (which in turn suggests what they aspire to do/be)--the boys fight pirates and the girls play house. But then, a bunch of people (mei included) found that we can relate to the adventuresome boys as well, even though we're girls. (Well, women, actually. BTW, there's only one guy in the class, aside from one of the instructors. tongue.gif) And that discussion went back to how Peter is a paradoxical character: He only grudgingly accepts Wendy as the Lost Boys' mother; he's very anti-adult. But when he's alone at the house in Neverland, he obediently drinks the "medicine" given to him by Wendy, as an adult should. (Unlike Mr. Darling, who didn't drink his medicine and gave it to the dog as a prank instead--quite childish of him.)

I suppose maybe women back then wouldn't have identified with the boys so much, since it was certainly a different era. I love how the readings of classics and the like all change based on when they are read. smile.gif

And then there's the violence. Of course. How easily the children kill adults. Granted, they were pirates, but still. Michael once made a comparison between the pirate he killed and his father, which we thought was rather strange.

Oedipus I find it very rare that anyone would write with undertones of the Electra complex.

We talked about a whole lot of other things, too, but mei can't recall them all. (And doubts the general forum public would want to read it all. tongue.gif)

I could be arrogant and say that I AM the general forum public. laugh.gif But that'd be untrue, so I'll keep my mouth shut. I'd still like to know though, if you could post some classroom discoveries from time to time regarding this book.

This is the first time mei read Peter Pan, and she never saw the Disney film in its entirety, but wow, is it dark! And depressing. =\

I've seen the Disney movie in full in Cantonese and that other one with Jeremy Sumpter (is that how you spell it?). tongue.gif And I own the book but haven't read it. When I do, I could discuss it with you. laugh.gif

Is that movie worth seeing, you think? huh.gif

Current Thoughts:

- Wow, this feels like a long post already.
- Lunch wasn't so great-tasting today, somehow . . .
- YAY, new tube of toothpaste. I'm always excited to see what it'll taste like.
Chiyo
Quis: I would say it is worth seeing. Its a very moving piece of work but I suppose the violence came as a bit of a shock. It was more like a war film interrupted by fantasy than vise versa but the characters in it are still just amazing. There is a happy ending of sorts.

Yeah, I actually surprised he managed to get all the way to the school. O_o

I have no idea what got into him. That's so not something he would do. He's a reckless guy, a real risk taker, but taking our father's truck just isn't something he'd do. He's never done it before or anything even remotely as bad. He's asked dad once if he could pull the truck out for him so he could shovel the drive way, but that was it. Today was "denim day" (well, actually for me, that's every day because all I wear is jeans) and she said, "I'll wear a denim skirt over jeans if you do!" and of course, stupid little me, not learning my lesson from yesterday, came into school with jeans and a skirt over it and I looked absolutely ridiculous because I was basically the only one who did it. >.< I got so mad at my friend.... but I'm so glad I brought that skirt because the "my time of the month" fairy came to me today, and the skirt hid the small red stain in my pants.

My school already had it's crappy Spirit Week. Feh. How does dressing up like an 80's prostitute show "School Spirit"? It's a bunch of pointless bull. All the girls in my school (Other than me and my friends) wore these HUGE gray sweatshirts with the collars and part of the shoulders cut off, neon miniskirts, fishnet stockings and their hair... their hair looked like it hadn't been groomed in days. [Shiver] Thank God that traumatizing week is over.

Today we took some required test that has no relevance to my existence as it is not graded and doesn't go on any record or anything, it's just some to-see-if-they're-teaching-us-right test. The school was split into alphabetical order and we had two teachers supervising us.

Unforunately, it was "that time" for me and I forgot to change my pad that morning so by the time I was an hour in to the test, I had a nice palm sized blood stain on the back of my pants. So during a break, I asked the female teacher if I could run down to the nurse to call my mom and hopefully get a change of pants and pads. She put on this nice fake smile and added a fake chuckle as well and said no. So I went to the restroom, got one of the cheap 25 pads that really suck, and (remember, I'm in a horrible mood because of my period >.>) went to the male teacher and bluntly said, "I bled through my pants, please let me go to the nurse". His expression was hilarious, it was literally like this: "o.o". He wrote me a pass and right as I left the female teacher came back. I think they got into an argument since he let me go but I didn't sit around to watch XD

A girl came with me to the nurse. I felt awful for this girl, because she was horribly pale and such. Now, our nurse is pretty much a ***** >.> If you're not dead, you can attend school in her opinion. So the nurse sent her back (It was awful seeing her wobble back ._.) and asked me what my problem was. I was still feeling moody and we're not on good terms with each other so I just turned around so she could plainly see the huge stain on the back of my pants. She let me call my mom after that (her expression was pretty hilarious too) and I went back to class, wearing a sweatshirt she gave me to put around my waist.

Now, the test break was 10 minutes, and I was late by 5. Not a big deal at all in my opinion. Not in the female supervising us, however. I opened my test book and she came over to me and said, "Well, you missed the directions, so you can't take this section of the test right now, you'll have to stay after." I said that the directions were right there in the book. She gave me a nasty look and responded with, "You'd have to HEAR them to understand." Okay, so I asked her to explain them for me now. She gave me another nasty look and walked to her desk. Now I'll be DAMNED if I stay after to finish a pointless test like this >.> so I opened the booklet and started. She walked over to me and took the booklet away so I sat there for FORTY minutes doing nothing.

Then came the next section of the test. It gave me a lovely surprise; the section I missed was the reading section. The next was writing. In order to understand and write about this section, I had to have read the first. I won't be modest; I'm an intelligent, booksmart kid. I could finish both sections in the time we were given to finish one. So I went back to the reading one and started that.

And so, the lady saw me on the previous section and walked over to me and said, "What are you doing? I said to-" Remember the sick girl I was with? She was sitting next to me during this test, and I had a "saved by the bell" moment. Only...I was saved by her puking all over the carpet >____> I felt horrible for her since that could been avoided if the damn nurse had let her go home. And here I witness that this lady isn't just a ***** to me; she is to most. She didn't let anyone walk her down to the nurse, the poor girl had to wobble down a flight of stairs and across the school to the nurse completely alone. And instead of calling the nurse, she called the janitor to clean up the puke.

After that the rest of the test went smoothly and though I'm sure I did god awful with all the interruptions, I don't care.

After the test I had plans to go hang out and grab lunch with my former closest friend (We never had a fight, we just sorta drifted away) However, as I expected, she forgot. Disappointed, I went home with my brother, took the 5 bucks my mom had given me for lunch, walked down to Bakers, and bought a LOT of chocolate >.> I needed it <.< (And as fate would have it, it started pouring when I left the store. I like the rain though, so I wasn't bothered) And here I am after fixing the internet which wouldn't connect for an hour or so and just started back up now.

I actually found my day pretty hilarious. I'm getting more optimistic about things =P

She be from Black Lagoon second series. The animations is generally good but does take some rather bad dips. A great series for over the top, A-team style action with some great charcters.

Black Lagoon was great. ohmy.gif The Engrish really cracks me up. And yeah, I kind of got annoyed at how the animation can be a little inconsistent.

If you promise to be my #1? wink.gif I won't anyone touch you.You can just lead them to the hotel room, where I'll be waiting to knock him or her over the head and steal the money. Wow, I should really stop planning stuff like that out unsure.gif

Ooo, ok. biggrin.gif I suppose I could be good at leading people on, yes.

rolleyes.gif If it had been me in that commercial, it would've never aired with that part. Due to me beating the living hell out of my friend for that ugly laugh.

I would pay to see that commercial. laugh.gif

"Buur sheet" is how how it's supposed to be pronounced. It's us native speakers who have been getting it wrong.

PhotoShop had better be miles better than PhotoImpact or I'm going Godzilla on Cardiff...or Mothra. One of those silly monsters anyway.
