Public transportation is really good here in the bay area but my truck is so economical with gas it was cheaper for me to drive than it was to take the BART (our version of the subway) train to work. Not to mention that when I drive I can sleep for a half hour more because it only takes me 15 minutes to get to work instead of an hour, and more convenient because I can run errands after work.

My thoughts: Damn I wish I could find a place where I could direct download Tsubasa with a small file size. I've been here an hour and 20 min. 10 min to go hopefuly.
- wish I had broardband at home, then I could use torrent and IRC rather than direct downloading at school.

- Went to see fireworks, as it was the 100th birthday of Alberta today. smile.gif
- Not a bad job on the pyrotechnics.
- Lots of street performers, too. Apparently, the city linked it with a street performers festival.

Several people, apparently, had questioned what this has to do with Chinese history, and so the professor lectured (with a bit of discussion as well) on how the actions of humans towards the land affect history, and how changes in the environment affect civilizations. For example: Chinese architecture was predominantly out of wood. Using wood means deforestation. Deforestation means that the mineral-enriched top-soil is blown away, and the soil loses the nutrients. But the people of what is now China (the professor kept emphasizing that at this time, no one thought of themselves as "Chinese," but as the people who lived where <insert description of region here>) were farmers, and they could not sustain their living if their crops failed. So, they migrated. Another reason to migrate would be if it turned cold. If they didn't move south, they would have to keep working at the land and hunt to make up for losses. But in hunting, they further change the ecosystem as the number of available animals to eat decreases as well. As a result, they're driven to extreme measures for survival--banditry, vagrantry, raiding the government... Which led us to the idea that one of the reasons dynasties fall is because it gets too cold.

It was all very logical; it was the unification of these logical pieces of information made the class enjoyable, I think. There were other points as well, but I'd have to look up my notes to remember. tongue.gif

- Week 1 of college is over. Whew. Now I have to do the History and Ethnic Studies readings for Tuesday, study Chinese for Monday...wait, no--Tuesday! Labor Day's Monday...heehee...Good ol' Labor Day...It'd be better if I could go home for the family "Un-Labor Day Bush" party...don't ask, my cousin named it that. I'm not too sure how that relates, anyway...

- Eagerly awaiting several packages: the textbooks I ordered, and the mysterious non-China-related souvenir from Quis. More eagerness for the latter, less for the former. biggrin.gif

For example: Chinese architecture was predominantly out of wood. Using wood means deforestation. Deforestation means that the mineral-enriched top-soil is blown away, and the soil loses the nutrients. But the people of what is now China (the professor kept emphasizing that at this time, no one thought of themselves as "Chinese," but as the people who lived where <insert description of region here>) were farmers, and they could not sustain their living if their crops failed. So, they migrated. Another reason to migrate would be if it turned cold. If they didn't move south, they would have to keep working at the land and hunt to make up for losses. But in hunting, they further change the ecosystem as the number of available animals to eat decreases as well. As a result, they're driven to extreme measures for survival--banditry, vagrantry, raiding the government... Which led us to the idea that one of the reasons dynasties fall is because it gets too cold.

It was all very logical; it was the unification of these logical pieces of information made the class enjoyable, I think. There were other points as well, but I'd have to look up my notes to remember. tongue.gif

- I thought I would finish that Oscar Wilde yesterday, but I didn't.
- I think I'll be able to finish it tonight though.
- I have learned that it is NOT a good idea to drive around the city as if you were on a Gran Turismo race track, especially if you are well aware that you are in intense pain, and are losing a lot of blood.

So, how do you get on that teacher's bad side?

I should probably start by going over how to get on her good side. Just to balance things out.

1) Be Asian.
2) Be female.
3) Be on the tennis team.

As for getting on her bad side...anything goes. My sister did it by forgetting to bring her schedule to sign. We were weighing the chances of the teacher liking her, versus the chances of the teacher liking our cousin (who is also in the class--he and my sister are in the same year) and it appears that he was one up on her (or, rather, she was one down). He's Asian, and though he's not female, he is on the tennis team.

- Speaking of my sister, she told me about all the different changes at her (and my old) high school. Apparently, the food has gone "healthy". That means: baked potato chips, Sun chips, no soda, but they do get to have Corn Nuts. Could it be because "corn" and "nuts" are healthy? All other junk foods are banned from the school market, but they can be brought from home. And it seems that the morning announcements include bits about the temperature and humidity, as well as "star gossip" on the latest happenings of today's celebrities. By golly, I am sooo glad I'm outta there.

- A fellow anime viewer on my floor showed me how to download things on Berkeley's "hub" so that it isn't counted on our bandwidths. It is also incredibly fast. (SCORE!!) biggrin.gif

- I must finish my readings ASAP. I've made a pact with myself that I won't watch any anime until I finish my work, lest I watch the entire 3-day weekend and accomplish nothing at all.
