actually, i've been wanting to name my weapons too. laugh.gif or maybe just the katana and not the nunchaku and bo.
Hee, so I'm not the only one that thinks about such things? laugh.gif I finally settled on "Kouka," which is (probably very improperly-used and flawed kanji-ish) Japanese for "Ice-Fire"-ish. rolleyes.gif;;;

ohmy.gif Wow, a couple old threads are back up. That happens when people actually use the search button. And Haroken is here, too.

I got a new electric foil!  So happy!! laugh.gif laugh.gif

...When I returned home, I sat down with the foil and was like,"Hm...now what shall I name it..."  Perhaps I've been reading a few too many of those samurai manga- where all the swords have names...tongue.gif||

E~to...Basically, there are two types of weapons, which applies to all three weapon catagories: practice and electric. The electric weapon is the one you actually use in electric bouts- it has wiring in the blade- a light goes off when you stab things properly with the tip of the foil (mainly the lame- this jacket covering the target area that's made of tiny electric circuits- if you hit anywhere else a light for "off-target" will go off)... All bouts in meets and tournaments are conducted with electric fencing.

A better foil will actually help improve your fencing results (although it won't do much good if you're normally a terrible fencer anyway like me~tongue.gif). So, naturally the electric foil is quite precious and is often likely to be the most expensive piece of fencing equipment in your bag (they can cost anywhere from $39 to over $170...). Strange people like me develop sentimental attachments to their electric foils~ biggrin.gif;;

Now, the practice weapon...that's just used for fencing practice to keep the electric one from wearing out too quickly (sometimes you might use the wall for target practice...). It's basically a weapon with a flexible metal blade and a rubber blob at the tip. The practice weapon is relatively inexpensive in comparison (about $19-ish), so a lot of people get in the habit of beating up their practice foils because it really doesn't make a difference as long as you don't snap the blade in the process of doing so. happy.gif||

...Ara. I've generated yet another lecture concerning fencing. mellow.gif Forgive me...laugh.gif||

you should have started using "ore" just to see what reaction it'd get. laugh.gif i'm trying to stop using "ore," but mouuu, it's hard to change. "watashi" and "atashi" have too many damn syllables. ohmy.gif

40-170? thats it? damn... fencing must be cheap, i'm not even that competitive in hockey anymore and i have pads and gloves that cost more than that; and my stuff isn't even that great.
Elderberry
No, no...well, fencing doesn't cost as much as hockey equipment or something, but it's certainly not...well, cheap! tongue.gif||

The price I listed above is just for a single electric foil- anyone who fences varsity or attends touraments will want at least two at all times, in case something happens or they snap, etc.. Besides, that, you also need whites (the jacket and fencing pants- about $35 each), a helmet ($40-ish), a glove (usually at least $20), an underarm protector ($19-ish), BPs if you're female ($27-ish), a lame ($65) and preferrably at least 2 body cords ($12-25 each). Along with a decent fencing equipment bag ($38 and up), and some PVC-pipe-ishys to store the weapons in ($2 each). biggrin.gif All the stuff adds up ve~ry easily~laugh.gif|| But at least they usually last for a few years so...rolleyes.gif

That's all nothing compared to kyudo. THe bow alone can cost up to $1,000 if you get a new bamboo one. The glove is in the $100-200 range depending on size and a single non-feathered practice arrow can cost $25-$50.

Needless to say, its essential to share equipment laugh.gif

I beg to differ, it's quite an interesting example of the issue of Indirect Force where the literal meaning is not intended, but rather a non-literal meaning is intended. And that non-literal meaning is in fact a request. Quite interesting stuff biggrin.gif

- Found a nice quote that I'll share with you people:

"It really is a nice theory. The only defect I think it has is probably common to all philosophical theories. It's wrong." ~ Saul Kripke

- Was on the train today and had to listen to some loudmouth talk about how he had to meet with the parents of a girl he got pregnant. He kept talking about how he'd take responsibility for his actions and all that crap. He was obviously someone who had no understanding of the severity and commitment level he was actually talking about. This conversation was taking place between people he'd never met before also.

To knock some girl up outside of marriage is a stupid thing to do in the first place. But of course, it was unintentional, so I'll give him that much credit. "He had to meet with the parents"? If that's the wording he used, then he doesn't sound like the kind who would actually follow through something all the way.

ahah....well, i suffered the same stuff for the past three years (though after freshman year they stopped giving out Governor's Scholarships to people who did well, bah). the tests are pretty damn easy too; last year i finished so fast that between the sections on the two days i managed to read all of Da Vinci Code. and don't you guys get out around noonish?

- damn it. my mom's scheduling all my doctors appointments and shot appointments and lab appointments on my two days off. so i'm pretty cranky, and i'm extra cranky because i've been stressing out so much this year that i've been covered in rashes and bumps, and i seem to be extra itchy today. so i'm understandably testy right now and she keeps bitching at me about appointments, and if i'm in a bad mood of course i throw attitude back at her. so it's a wonderful little [itchy] bitchfest here. and now my dad has joined in, wonderful.

A. To think of quickly
B. A bolt of lightning
C. Bright Light
D, To fall down a flight of stairs

So, naturally the electric foil is quite precious and is often likely to be the most expensive piece of fencing equipment in your bag (they can cost anywhere from $39 to over $170...).

Oooh, fencing! That sounds like fun! I should add it to my list of things to try. *reads over list* Hmmm...karate, yoga, knitting..wow, this is a long list ^^

I'm a horseback rider myself, and that is an expensive sport! I don't even own a horse yet and an hour lesson costs $45. I mean, I walked into the local tack shop last week to buy a new pair of riding gloves ($25!) and I started looking at cool tack and stuff. I started looking at the saddle pads thinking "Oooh, look at all the pretty colors!". I walk up to this really nice-looking purple one and happen to glance at the price tag- $75.

So I go over to the grooming supplies and I see this brush. I pick it up and feel the bristles and it's really, really soft. I look at the price sticker. $30. For a freaking brush!

I go and look at the gloves and decide that they are WAAAY too expensive. I decide to take one last look around, so I go over to the saddles. They were selling used saddles. I went over to one that looked in fairly good shape and flipped over the price tag. Seven. Hundred. Dollars. For a used saddle. However, the ending to my little tale is a happy one. I picked up a pair of used gloves from friend for five dollars. Yay for me. Oh, sorry...I'm rambling again.

* I was alright this morning, (yes, I ate breakfast) but around 10 o'clock, I started feeling sick and dizzy and almost fell in the stairs of the school. My friend Jean was kind enough to help me, but I've been sick and unable to stand much for the whole day. I'm better now, but I'm still kinda worried... Must have been because of the stress. I had two big exams today... Fortunatly, they were easy. Weird. Usually, I don't stress at all...

* I had much work to do for tomorrow, but left it at school. >.< I'll have explaining to do to my teachers...

The only good thing about being sick, is the soup my mother makes me... yum, mushrooms...

Any formal inquiries I do usually start off just like a letter even when done in email. Technically email is a form of written communication, which requires standard protocols. So, use "dear". Don't introduce your name in the email as it's not conversation. At the end of the email, you'll have the "sincerely, <xrninja smile.gif>", so you don't need to say, "hello, my name is...".

Be brief and specific about what you want as people are inundated with emails and don't want to have their time wasted and inbox even more full.

Also remember that many large companies have internship opportunities already posted on a web site. Even monster.com will have internship opportunities in the area, so check there as well. But, of course, getting to know someone on the inside is always helpful in speeding things up and finding out about things that haven't been posted yet.
