girl and her dog got combined as one...that was so sad...

Ya mean Nina and Alexander? *thins* You gotta be thinking that.
azn_romeo_4u
yup wasn't it sad? almost made me cry.
winry007
I voted maybe because I burst out crying @ the end of episode 50 (for reasons that people who have watched it will know) And then in episode 51 i cried again @ da very end! I couldn't get over it 4 days!!! Which is really unusual 4 me! I'm a normally rock hard person so I was surprised when you-know-what happens and god did it happen fast (!) that I cried! I guess its just one of those things I get addicted to and look forward to every time I get a chance to watch some, but now its all over I'm thinking, what am I gonna do now? I'm gonna post a new topic askin 4 good animes smile.gif But I truly congratulate all the people who contributed to the making of FMA immensly and I say its one of the best things I've ever watched! Can't WAIT for the movie wink.gif

Yeah, I agree. The saddest anime I've ever seen was the Grave of the Fireflies. But FMA is one to count too. Most saddest part to me was on episode 25, the death of Maes Hughes. If I wasn't with my sister back then, I swear I'd let it all out. And then I came to think about Maes's frequent appearance on episodes 20 up to his death episode. It was a signal that he'll be bidding us goodbye... ( T3T) I wish I could comfort Glacier and Elysia. I wish I was there on the day of his burial... sad, so so so sad! ( T3T)
Kyros
I don't think some of you people have seen any sad anime before if you think this is bad. How about watching some of these:

Grave of the Fireflies
Rurouni Kenshin ovas
Trigun (yeah, I think this is just as sad in a way)
Gundam SeeD (some parts...Miguel sad.gif)
Argentosoma

There, try some of those. Sure, most of them might not be quite as sad as fma, but they have their moments. I can definately say that Grave of the Fireflies and Kenshin ovas are so much worse in the end than fma...
InsaneFangirl
Maybe. I haven't seen more then a few episodes of other animes. But, FMA never fails to make me cry during certain episodes.
Ed-Elric
Yes probably because (movie spoiler highlight for spoiler) in the movie izumi is dead
Guest
Elfen Lied is a very sad anime

In Seed Destniny.. the storyline is a bit cheesy there so I don't feel sad about events in the First seed anymore. Although I havent seen many sad animes, FMA has very emotional parts..... Hughes.... oh god why? dry.gif Also the ending is a bit sad and dissapointing. Haven't read the anime how much is it different compared to the show?
D-Rok
I said no because I thinkt Neon Genesis Evangelion was the sadest.
MasterKris
I've seen sadder.
The Great Asparagus
wow the reults are close. i said 'yes' mainly because i've fma is the only anime i've watched entirely, and i've seen most of furuba and bits and pieces of other various anime thingys, so yeah. but still, the story can get sad at times. ;_; it's so sad, that when i'm in pain or whatever, i tell myself that ed and al have been through worse, so yeah lol. *tearfully gazes into the sky*

the saddest thing in the whole fma anime is prolly the ending. T__T the movie doesn't make it all THAT much better, though it did make me considerably... somewhat happier. sad endings are just so... sad.

The end of the movie is happy.
Not sad. Happy.

No, because the ending is decent and can be considered as a "happy ending".

No, because Ed and Al didn't die.

No, there is a sh!tload of other anime out there that are more sad.

Hmm.. I don't think FMA is the saddest anime I've ever watched. To me.. it would have to be Grave of the Fireflies. It’s basically about two kids, Seita and Satsuko, and how they dealt with the horrors of World War 2. If you haven’t watched it before, you should. It’s a really sad Anime movie and it made me cry at the end… ;_;

TRUE!!!!!...well i voted maybe...because it is one of the saddest....
.....but Grave of the Fireflies has got to be the saddest anime I've seen so far..
I was just bawling my eyes out watching that...FMA made me cry and feel realllly
sad deep inside me...i cried sometimes in FMA...but not as much as Grave of the Fireflies....
(crying..)

Fushigi Yuugi is sad. I only saw a few episodes but, it is sad.

Fushigi Yuugi is sad, but like FMA, it also has many light-hearted moments. I would define a "sad" anime as one where nothing good comes for the characters in the end, and in this case, Grave of the Fireflies beats about everything. But for characters going through some really difficult struggles, Now and Then, Here and There certainly ranks high. Neither of these has much humor or light-heartedness to counter the sad scenes. FMA and FY at least try to break things up in between the very sad episodes.
Clemenx009
i dont think so, like many have said Grave Of the Fireflies its just! i cant describe it but i cant watch it without crying really its realy strong
Snake-Alchemist
nah, this show's emotional base is taken from real life stuff, and the tragedys are their to draw people in who can relate, for instance, any one whos ever lost a parent like me, or a sibling, or anyone whos ever lost a limb can simpithize with this series, anyone like me who has gone into a blind rage for being called a scrunt (cross between a squirt and runt), or any other form of discrimination for that matter, or anyone who loves but doesent always like their little bro. Not to mention the tragedys give the people personality, after all I doubt that theirs anyone here who has had a perfect life, im particularly drawn to this show because im only a short(about 4'8") 15 year old boy, who has seen his fair share of dispair, unfair treatment, and death. So all in all I wouldent call it "SAD", I would prefer to call it realistic, and I would say arkawa made a good choice by drawing in the people who can understand how the charecters feel.
Colette
The series is sad, but not the saddest out there.

And there's way to much humor in it to be the saddest.
dream_alchemist
This may sound strange ...

But i think that part of what makes FMA so sad is the fact that it does have so much humour in it, because it makes the tragic parts seem even more heartbreaking in contrast.

It's true that I've seen 'sadder' animes in the sense that the characters have been through a great deal worse, but I still feel far more sympathetic towards the characters in FMA. There's something about them that makes them seem more innocent and pitiful, even the homonculi ... Hell, I cried when each of the homonculi died ...

And then there's the soundtrack. 0_o. I've probably spent a total of ten hours crying because of that damn depressing soundtrack ...

And this has to be the saddest scene I've ever seen in my whole entire life:
"I'll give you my other leg ... I'll give you both of my arms ... I'll even give you my heart! Just give me my brother back! He-he's the only brother I have!"
Ok, I almost cried typing that out. I know, I'm pathetic.
yoko0217
I picked "maybe", because there's more sad animes in this world... dry.gif
Winkle
Not really. I've seen waaay sadder stuff. FMA has some touching and emotional parts but sad? Noooo.
Melydragon
The results are really close but i voted YESSSS

I don´t think that is the saddest anime ever but it made me cry almost 3/4 parts of the series. It is just so sad. And it is beautiful at the same time. When you think about it, you realize that Edward and Alphonse have been through a lot. Maybe even more than what we will ever go through. They are my heroes. They wanted to do something good by bringing their mother back but it turned out even worse. And the endings don´t make it any better. They are so sad. If I didn´t love them so much I would problably never watch them. All of them are sad. I can´t stand being sad. It is just so sad.

I wa crying like a baby in The Night of the Chimera´s cry, and Fullmetal Heart, and Bonding Memories, and His name is Unknown. I just can´t help it. I used to cry on the nights of FMA last year before going to sleep if they were a sad episode. I couldn´t help it, I swer

Come on, I know that I´m not the only one who doesn´t cry in Fullmetal Alchemist. It is just so ... sad full of tragedies.
DJ_Zephyr
I'd have to say no. FMA has had some moments that tug at the heartstrings, and I haven't seen the last episode yet, but the one anime that moved me closest to tears was Voices Of A Distant Star, so that wins the prize for me.
Hana no Kuroi
Nnn...I haven't seen too much of the anime to make a desicion. It's pretty deep in the manga, though, but...If I see more, I'll have a real verdict (doesn't watch anime late at night)...

The anime is not as sad as other animes...I'm not even sure if there is a sadder than sad anime...

The Great Asparagus
ahhh i'm back at this thread after like, some months. i've changed my mind!! full moon wo sagashite is sadder! i cried over like, half of the episodes. well not really, but yeah. however, if i indulge myself into fma and it's wonderfulness and think lots about all the sad parts, i'm sure i'd make me even sadder.
FullmetalMagician
fma might be sad but not as sad as uh...
some anime that I've watched without a propler ending..
T_T

I dunno really...
Some anime might be sadder than fma *in a positive way*

Francesca
No, FMA has his sad moments but it's not as much desperate as "Grave for fireflies", Saikano or Versailles no bara...
FullmetalMagician

O that is so true; The Fireflies is almost impossible to watch and so beautiful. I understand it is on dvd now. A story of bad to worse.

Joegirl
Very sad, but not the saddest. I've cried LOTS of times during the series.
Vash_the_Gunslinger
The saddest anime for me is Grave of the Fireflies or Cowboy Bebop. FMA is sad until you see the movie.
Hyleaus
I think that I agree with the sentiments that Cowboy bebop is a sadness contender. I think that in both CB and FMA (series) the element which caused me the most grief was seperation. Death is sad, not meeting one's goals is sad, but to be seperated from someone, having gone through such an immense journey with them, is a tear-jerking moment. What compounds this feeling is that both Al and Ed know that each other are alive but that there is no way to comunicate. I suppose, the closest analogy that I could come up with would be being in prison, or having loved ones travel to undeveloped parts of Africa where communication is impossible.

Did no one here see Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien?

Sad sad sad x19349823

Maybe I just missed someone mentioning it in the myriad of posts.
hahahahaha
this may be the sadest at some point "but" at some times it can also be the most hilarious anime ever
Sin Of Envy
It is sad but also funny, if it was any longer and characters keep dieing I wonder would anyone stay alive...
Dark Alchemist Sakura
Ever saw Milenium Actress?

FMA may be sad, but I have to admit that Milenium Actress made me cry more.... It was the saddest thing I ever saw....
Edsrhimp
Well it is a sad anime.

But their are a lot of different anime out there, it's like saying, "this one out of a billion is the saddest anime ever!111" and probably not knowing what the other anime shows are about.

But it was one of the saddest I've seen.
Popogeejo
I dunno if FMA is themost sad anime ever but this AMV certainly makes a good argument for it.
Sin Of Envy
That video owns other FMA AMV's...
FMAchicka
wELL IT IS SAD. I HATE HOW EPISODE 51 ENDED CUZ AL AND ED ARE SEPERATED AND AL CAN'T REMEMBER THE 4 YEARS BUT THEN I SAW THE FMA MOVIE AND THEY ENDED UP BEING TO GETHER AND HE REMEMBERED THE STUFF. BUT NOW THEY CAN'T SEE WINRY AND ROSE CUZ THEY ARE IN THE OTHER WORLD AND ALL. I SAY MORE FMA!!!

I have to watch it first, then I tell what I think abiut the amv
Dyshin
FMA is not the 'saddest anime ever' by a long shot.

A great series, but I only recall it getting a gut reaction out of me once, at the end of episode 25.

Off the top of my head, Saishuheiki Kanojo (a.k.a She, the Ultimate Weapon or SaiKano) takes the cake. Towards the end of the series, the whole point seems to be how much crappier they can make the remaining characters' lives.
Grand Arcanum
out of all the amime shows out there i doubt that FMA is the saddest. however it is by far the saddest anime i have ever seen.
marktse
kenshin or Samurai X was definately the saddest. Especially the movies. The first one when he was an assassin at 16 years and then kills his wife and then when hes an old man never forgiving himself and abandons his family so he can seek atonement.

Grave of the Fireflies is very depressing and so his Once Upon a Tme in Windaria. Magnetic Rose, the short animation within Memories. I suppose FMA was sad at the end and all the lives lost during the war. The movie doesn't have a very happy ending either.

In the series I was hopeing that Lust would admit feelings for Scar before they both died but I think i could tell because somethings are just conveyed through emotions and left unsaid. And the movie sorta backs my theory up. I Sort of think its cool that in the alternate world, Alphonse's development team on the rockets all are parallel versions of the chimera special ops unit in Lab 5. Makes you wonder if Alphonse and Martyl get together.
FullmetalMagician
That was a pretty good AMV!

@marktse- Rurouni Kenshin was pretty sad, but it was funny in a way, and violent. But could you tell me what happened to the last episode? I haven't seen that anime for 3 years!

well basically, the series ends with Kenshin and Karou together however in the final movie he is walking with her and she is kidnapped by Kenshin's first wife's brother. Back in the OVA it is revealed Kenshin vowed never to kill again after the meiji era after killing his wife during an ambush attack. Years of guilt always toils at his soul and he regrets taking so many lives to bring and era of peace that never happened. Anyways his last fight ever is when he fights his first wife's brother and defeats him. Kenshin tells him beating him will never bring him peace but if he is happier killing Kenshin, then he'll gladly let him take his life. Karou stops the brother by sheilding Kenshin and the guy starts to cry. He is reminded of his sister and can no longer take revenge. Kenshin never forgives himself but spends the rest of his life helping others to attone for the past. This was his answer to the sins he has commited. In the end he abandons Karou and his son to help others until he is stricken with leoparcy. Sano finds him sends him back to Japan to tell him that there is no more for him to do and that he should be home with Karou who is also dying of leparcy. Kenshin makes it home only to die at Karou's side where she notices the cross scar is gone and that he is forgiven.

Kenshin's son filled with hatred vows to be a greater swordsmen then his father ever will. He recreated the Hiten Mitsurugi style based on what he can peice together and taught under Hiko Seijiero, Kenshin's teacher. However Hiko told Yahiko that Hiten Mits was developed to protect the weak from suffering. However it was designed to be too powerful and that given that power, one tends to bring only saddness and guilt to their lives. Just like he did and also Kenshin. He said times have change the philosophy is out dated. He said that Kenshin has changed the meaning of the sword and such brutality is no longer necessary. Thus he states hiten mitz will end with him. There will ne no more successors to the style. Yahiko was given Kenshins sakabatu as his rite of passage. and weilds it in a final battle with Kenshin's son. Yahiko tell him he is jealous of his natural talent however, the sword represents all the battles and experiences he has and strength passed down from kenshin and defeats Kenshin's son. His son returns home with the Sakabatou to be there before his mom dies.

It also eludes that Dr. megumi and Sano had feelings but noting ever came of it.

ACE1988_3
Yes I would have to say that FMA is probubly one of the sadest animes out there, but you have to think Cowboy BeBop was also very sad so would have to compare and contrast all of the animes out there. smile.gif
