So, those of you who are under 18 can ask those who are over 18 questions to gain wisdom for your pathetic lives tongue.gif laugh.gif
WhiteMike
lol, ask away, kids.
Quistis88
But do you have to be under 18 to ask? laugh.gif Grown-ups can't ask other grown-ups?

Wow, does that count as a question or two? Make that three.
ἀρχή
Yes, feel free to ask the older grown ups too. I just figured if I made the limit too high, only a very minimum of people could actually respond to questions.
A Dude that says stuff
Hehe... nice one arche, a place where you can just share your general wisdom and experience to those who have not yet had to walk through the whole trial and error process themselves (regarding whatever they ask)...

Let me then ask something!
Hmm... what do I want to know...

Can a hardened grown up take useful direction from someone else easilly?

What seems to me to be the case is that pride grows over time. I for instance wouldn't really want to listen to a 9 year old, telling me how I am screwing up my life and what Im doing wrong... One is too arrogant and proud for that...
Doesn't even matter if the mentor is a hypothetical 9 year old or a 50 year old... sometimes we think we know everything, but we dont biggrin.gif

So the real question might be; Are you proud (as in slightly arrogant:P)?
(and this question goes to whoever dares examining their own mind and behavioral attributes)
Luckyalchemy27
Here's a question:

Why do adults always talk about kids like they're not there, even when they're standing right next to them?

I can take correction from a 9 year old if it's objective issues (i.e. math problem I got wrong). I don't with most qualitative issues because often a 9 year old doesn't know the true nature of a problem. But if I found they had some sensitivity to the issue, I probably could appreciate what anyone says at any age.

On the average, I'm pretty arrogant, however tongue.gif.

Contrary to what I said above, kids are worthless and don't have any value to a conversation laugh.gif If you think I believe that, you're crazy.

Kids don't usually show interest in the conversation, so it's rare to think of them as being part of the conversation.

If you're asking why parents care about it, then I'd probably say that parents realize that teenagers are not always able to think clearly. There's still an irrationality with teenagers that doesn't go away until usually after 19 or 20 depending on the kid. In addition to this, there's no reason for a parent to believe that their kids are always telling the truth. Since kids were able to talk, they've been telling lies and trying to trick their parents. So, no parent can believe that you are actually getting enough sleep and being productive/healthy with your time.

So, because of this, parents will attempt to keep structures set. Of course this is still hard to avoid, so as you become and adult, parents are still going to inquire about these things. Remember that it's hard to stop worrying about these things after worrying about them for 18+ years.

laugh.gif I thought I just plain out sucked, but for some reason, little kids are so good at fighting games. They can press the most random things, yet string the longest combos and special moves. I used to get beat by my lil brother sometimes and my little cousins and I was like, "How do they do that when they don't even know what X does?"

To stay on topic: If you are a parent, do you believe in physical methods of discipline (spanking, belting, macing, foiling) or do you prefer to take the psychological route (scare tactics, reverse psychology, etc)? Or are you a horrible parent and let your kids own you? laugh.gif

Depends on the type of person the adult is. I myself will probably do so if the child is giving logical directions. Then again, logic in a child's case can be relative.

QUOTE(Luckyalchemy27 @ Jun 19 2005, 10:45 AM)

You're all too small. Like arche said, when adults are having a conversation most of the time, the child will either be uninterested or not comprehending half the words being used. Therefore, they're not really "there", per se.

I am Chinese, so I've gone through all the physical disciplinary methods. I like the psychological tactics myself, as I'm better with words. I might also hurt my hand if I spank a child. No need for it to go both ways. Then again, it hurts emotionally when a child is misbehaving and needs punishment anyhow.

I don't consider physical punishment usefull. My wife tried it at times and my daughter would feed into it making her worse. At my daughter's age, time out is horrible to her. I do know how to physically restrain without causing any harm to her also.

Anyway, now that she's older, I have the options of throwing/giving her things away. When she's older, she'll lose more things if she pushes me laugh.gif

Well, you're at the age when you notice that there are differences between boys and girls. Boys typically go through a pervert stage and you are in it. If you hide it well, you'll find that every girl you know will always consider you a friend and never think of you romantically. Prepare yourself to be completely dateless for a while tongue.gif

First, I'm not trying to make anyone laugh. If you laugh, it's purely your own fault and I take no responsibility for any liabilities of laughter at anything I write, say, think, or do.

As far as scolding you, if you're young, you deserve it. It's a right of passage to be put down and told you don't know anything as a kid. I know a few 13 year olds that I can respect based on their thoughtfulness, intellect, and emotional capacity. On the whole, however, you kids are just a bunch of self serving manipulative bastards.

Well, that would apply for regular adult conversations, but I hate it when adults talk ABOUT the kid in question. For instance:

Timmy's Mom: Oh, yeah, Timmy is just being the biggest pain today!
Random Friend: I know how you feel. My little Anna is the same way.
Timmy's Mom: You wouldn't believe what he was doing yesterday. He was...*blah blah blah*
Timmy: Mom? I'm right here.
Timmy's Mom: Hold on a second, honey. The grown-ups are talking now. *continues to go on and talk about Timmy*

Adults telling children to "grow up" is usually an indicator that the child in question should know better for their age. It's not that we want you to never have fun, but there are things in life which should be taken seriously, and we want you to know what they are.

Some adults do it unintentionally, but some use it for psychological effect. If Timmy hears his mother talking about how he's being a pain, then it would motivate him to not be so much of a pain in the future if he doesn't want his mother blabbing his bad points to her friends.

Because parents are as hypocritical as everyone else. Perhaps they think that leaving their shoes in front of the door it is a bad habit and doesn't want you to pick up on it, too. As well, it's common sense and common courtesy. If you leave the shoes in front of the door, it becomes quite inconvenient for other people.

Here's my angry old man answer tongue.gif: Your parents work hard and can put their shoes wherever the hell they want. Get a job and contribute to the rent/mortgage and you can have a say on where you put your shoes. Why do you tend to use age as a defense for intellectual superiority? It is true in some cases, but sometimes the youth are smarter than the elder, though they hate to or don't admit it.

Let's just say that instances where a younger person is smarter than an older person are a rarity.

I think it's not exactly a "defense" for intellectual superiority, but rather, a legitimate reason. On the whole, we've lived longer, we've seen more, therefore, we know many things that you may not understand until you yourself are our age. Of course, this does not mean that we're always right. I still believe that there are adults out there who need to see things from a child's point of view every once in a while.

Both children and adults can see the same things differently, and it is when we combine these differences and accept/assess opinions from both sides that we can attain harmony between the two groups.

Until I'm old and grey most likely. Oh wait... I'm grey already. mellow.gif I am old.

QUOTE(silver bg @ Jun 30 2005, 12:03 AM)
why are you so boring?

- we're not as young as we used to be.
- we're light-years ahead of you, young ones. We've seen and done things long before your time. The excitement has worn off.
- different tastes. (Although this one's a bit redundant, since everything comes back like a vicious cycle. Music, style of clothing, toys, etc. etc. Not to say it isn't a valid reason for most people...)

That's something I'd expect from a seasoned man....

None taken. biggrin.gif Because I'm not "a seasoned man".

And I chalk that up to bitterness and/or jealousy on the adult's part. Bitterness because kids just can't take the hint that adults revel in their time of peace and quiet. Always kicking the ball in their yard, time after time, after time... We usually have that problem ourselves. It gets pretty irritating after a while. (Eh, not exactly the prime example of bitterness there tongue.gif)

Jealousy, because they look back on their own youth and wonder what happened to the time. They wish they could have their youth back, be carefree and naive, without heavy burdens and responsibilities... I know I do. Which is pretty pathetic, because I'm still 'in the prime of my life!'

I'm getting freakin' old. I turn 18 next year, and I was wondering, when exactly is it that most of you began to actually feel like an adult? And was the transition hard for any of you?

You think you're old? biggrin.gif Anyhow, to answer your question, I think my problem is that I never really got to be a kid. I've been the way I am for as long as I could remember. I don't think there even was much of a transition, in this case.

arche usually makes great Spam threads.

Q: How would you go about giving your child the birds and the bees talk? Will the talk vary regarding gender? Or will you let your child find out for themselves, through friends/media?

Of course it would vary with gender. No idea on how to deliver that speech yet though. I'll tell you when I get there.

That's like asking "Why are kids so irritating sometimes?"

I don't say it; I think it. Children do walk on my lawn sometimes on their way home from school (for those of you who don't know, I live almost directly across from one).

If those kids come close to the ones living in this neighbourhood that must be bad. I also live close to my former high school, which was of course swell when I was little, it definitely isn't anymore. Kids cn be such brats. tongue.gif Especially the girls. One of those boogers broke my Lionheart necklace I let my little Brother wear. He came home this afternoon, crying like crazy, because I was very hesitant at first to let him loan it for just today. Poor kid.

I spent my 20's as a performer so it was like living in a fantasy world sort of speak not the same adult responsibilitys as working the 8-5 grind.

Oh so is that why you were dressed in (I think) strange clothes in the picture you showed us so long ago?

The ones in the photos thread? Those were from a couple of photoshoots my friend and I did. He is a photographer and a good one at that. I didn't think I was dressed so strangely in those pictures, actually, the dress I'm wearing is one I wore to homecoming back in highschool.

That dress is like so goth dude! laugh.gif

It's pretty tame compared to some outfits I've sported on stage.

Then stay off their lawn so they don't have to say that. laugh.gif

As for the boring thing. It's kind of like Kase said we've been there and done that. What you are experiencing now we have already gone through and have moved onto other things. Plus young people usually think adults are boring I used to when I was younger. The things that interest us usually don't interest younger people. You'll probably understand someday.

Even though I'm 19 now, I still don't feel like an adult. Or rather, how I preceive an adult to be [acting]. I did when I turned 18 some time ago, but now I realize I was making a false start. tongue.gif

yeah, i turned 18 a few months ago, and i seriously don't feel any more like an adult. the fact that i'm soon off to college sobers me more than my age does. sometimes when i'm being immature, a little voice in my head will remind me that i should really act my age and grow up eventually, but i don't know how long that'll take. i expect i will grow up suddenly and a lot once i hit college, though, due to the change in friends, atmosphere, expectations, and etc. =/

I just turned 18 last week. ^^; I doubt I'll ever feel "grownup" unless I move away and have a kid or somethin' >.< But that *really* has nothing to do with anything. I feel old compared to my friends... but to everyone else.. I'm just insignificant.

Besides... my friends [though younger] don't see me as older then them (because I'm *cough*sh0rt*cough* >.<)

question: when (if ever) did you know what you wanted to "do with your life"? ^^;

btw, this *is* one of the better spam threads I've seen.
