It's a looooong story.

it all started with Inuysha. For my tenth birthday, I got Inuyasha manga volume 1 and 2. Then, since I L-O-V-E cats, my mom thought I would like Tokyo Mew Mew. And now I'm up to forty-something in manga with 8 collections.

I first started watching the anime. But I wanted to read the manga so I went to the store and got some. But then I saw all the other kinds they have.So now I am reading stuff I have never seen on tv befor.
DustStorm
I was at Target and I happened to stumble into a Yuyu Hakusho manga. I remember watching YuyuHakusho on T.V. so I decided to buy it.
The Ramen Alchemist
I just started watching Naruto and I got to the part where he thought Haku killed Sasuke and then that was all of the anime that was out at the time not wanting to wait I looked for the manga and I've been into Manga since
InsaneFangirl
I saw a friend reading it, and being naturally nosy and curious, I asked to read it. It was volume one of Fruits Basket. I loved it right away, and started to buy my own. Now I have 10 volumes, soon to be 11.
beyondredemption
I started watching Sailor moon and Pokemon when I was a kid, and then I moved to a new school district where I met a bunch of girls who also liked anime and manga, and they introduced me to some of the manga I like. I also go to the bookstore to see what types of manga I can try out next.

Well... I've always watched anime about as long as I can remember... I just didn't know that it was anime. What got me into manga were my friends. I saw them reading it and noticed that it looked a lot like anime (by this time in my life, I knew what it was) so they let me borrow it and I've been hooked since happy.gif
Kitty Alchemist
What go me in to manga was shonen jump. I never heard of manga until my friend older sister so me and let me borrow her book. Now everytime we get a new manga we switch off books to read every week.

My first manga was Gundam Wing: Episode Zero. I never knew what manga was until even after I bought some more GW graphic novels. They were translated from their original Japanese and given a Western Left to Right format. You must understand this was years ago. One day, I picked up an art book by an American cartoonist by the name of Christopher Hart, who had an entire series of How-To-Draw Japanese Manga books. It was then that I discovered the world of Manga. The first time I encountered the Right to Left Eastern Format was a few years ago when I picked up a copy of Shonen Jump #2. I became obsessed with Manga from that point on, collecting every issue of the Magazine, picking and choosing favorites to follow, and going out of my way to search every bookstore within reach for Manga that catches my interest.

To me, I am very much attracted by the superior art found in Manga and Anime, compared to American Cartoons and Comics. As I grew up, I began to admire these Mediums more for their content. I find that the best Anime and Manga out there can be found through extensive research.

Enjoy!

I'll be honest...Shonen Jump and Yu-Gi-Oh! vol. 1 were my first manga and the reason I picked them up was because they had Yugi on the front ^.^;;. Now, my horizons are much wider and I like to read whatever sounds interesting!

hmm... i actually just started watching anime as a kid.. skipped all the little kiddy stuffs like Sesame Street and went right to anime... I believe the first one that caught my eye was CardCaptor Sakura, then I started downloading many of the things that people recommended...

and when downloading started to take a really long time, becoming quite a pain, I switched over to manga, since it's so much more convenient to access.. and yeah.. heh ^^

I was looking for something at the bookfair at school and I found a How to draw Manga book and I was hooked! I only found out a few months later that there were tons of series! I was first hooked on Dream Saga, then FMA, then One Piece, then Fruits Basket, then Case Closed, then .Hack//Ledgend of the Twilite, then D. Gray-Man.

Here's the thing... Until about two years ago I had no idea what manga were...
So, two years ago I went on this field trip to Key Largo for snorkeling. You always make lots of friends on field trips... Two of the friends(They're twins.) I met introduced me to manga. My first manga was Inu-Yasha. I borrowed it from them and I liked it so much I bought it. happy.gif
Lone Wolf
Well, I knew that anime storylines are slightly (or sometimes greatly) altered from their original manga stoylines, so I decided to see how different they were. I started with InuYasha, but after volume ten, I realized that it would cost a fortune to buy every volume, so I stopped reading it, and began to buy Fullmetal Alchemist! Funniest darn manga series I've ever read! laugh.gif

Well when I was little I watched many an anime without knowing they were "anime". I just was like "I love this show!" I liked...um. sailor moon, dbz, and something else. I have no idea what it was called! anyone remember this: a guy living with a house of girls (love hina style plot) one girl was a princess from another planet and another was some weird evil-ish lady with a bunny looking creature that was also a spaceship. I loved it and have NO idea what it's called lol. I also loved anime movies (totoro was my favourite)

what attracted me to manga was a friend of mine! I met her at camp and she had brought a boxed collectors set of Fruits Basket with her! haha. I read all of it in a week and loved it dearly. I then bought all of the books and read them like crazy (now I have most memoized lol). I then decided to actually look into OTHER mangas. So basicly I liked things with bright colours on the front and cute drawing styles (aka: not MARS, I hate that style, it makes me cringe o_O)

Now I tend to read reviews. Often times I'll just go to the store and read one volume of everything there, if it draws me in I read more! :3

oops...this was a long post... (btw: venus alchemist: I love your icon! XD)
I_Love_Maes
At first I wanted to read it because I'm about to become a school librarian, and I didn't want to fail my future students by not knowing about a certain kind of literature! So it started as a professional interest... helped along a little bit by the fact that a guy I knew was really into it and let me know some good titles to read. Then, after that, I completely fell in love w/ it! Now I dare you to pry it out of my hands! laugh.gif

I wish to death I had more people to talk about it w/. I bring it up in various convos, and all I ever get are shrugs, weird looks, and "just humor her" expressions! unsure.gif

Well I use to watch Sailor Moon and other kiddie animes when I was little but I didn't know what Manga was until a friend of mine introduced me to Inu-yasha at a camp. I bought like over 20 volumes I was so addicted! But Inu-yasha is waaaay to long for me and I spread out more. Always on the search for more good manga to read!

My friend has been into manga for a long time, and at her suggestion our teacher actually decided to do a unit on it as part of a "learning about other cultures" thing. Most people in my class didn't really like it though... exept for me ^^! the first manga I read was fullmetal alchemist, and I have been obsessed ever since biggrin.gif
Kitty Alchemist
I started reading manga when the first vol. of Rurouni Kenshin and D.N.Angel came out. I like reading it so much I started to buy more and more. biggrin.gif
Silver Wolf
I started reading manga because all my friends were reading them and Kitty alchemist always get hook in to them when she buys a new manga.

Got interested in anime when I was 5 or so by that which was Sailor Moon. I bought my first graphic novel in...grade 7 I think...or 8....probably was 8 actually...Anywho, it was Sailor Moon then too. - - (bought the last volume so I could see the Asteroid senshi xD) I only bought it because well...I wanted to see the Asteroid Senshi, and manga is much more cheaper than anime. =D

Although, it wasn't until grade 9 that I really started to collect manga, and it's gone from 3 books (Sailor Moon Stars volumes 1 and 3...not 2....and vol 1 of Angelic Layer) to 60 in two years. xDDD yay~

and my dvd collection remains pathetic...*sigh* at least I have a lot of Studio Ghibli movies =D

Fayth Prophecy
I didn't really "pick up" manga, it was more like "thrown" at me by one of my friends who was (and still is) a manga addict. After that I started reading more.
blubbernuggetalchemist
it al started when i was 6, i used to watch pokemon and digimon. i watched digimon so much, i forgot entirely about pokemon exept the games. i watched the series all the way until the 4th season, after that it got cancelled in america. so when i was ten my mother ordered a book that said "the original manga which inspired the hit tv series, digimon" off of the internet for me. i opened the book, only to find it was backwards, and i guess any other manga reader knows the rest. i was just hooked on manga!
Nepharski
FullMetal Alchemist was the first Manga I ever read, and thus far it's the only Manga I read, so there you have it.
Sharingan Serpent

Since when has Fangirl and Gruru been the same thing?

I picked up a copy of the first FMA manga when I ordered some DVDs from Amazon.
I now have 4 parts of FMA, all of Azumanga (Something for the coffe table), one part of Gunslinger girl. I plan to complete FMA and GG over a time and maybe start Naruto...maybe.
Ice Blizzard
I picked up manga when i was in china, and saw japenese megeman books
darker_element
sad.gif My Sis wouldn't let me her read manga books when she first discovered them, so I read Inuyasha in secret and out of spite...Then I heard about FMA and got hooked for real. smile.gif
Kal Rommel
I was in 6th grade when I picked up my first Shonen Jump. I think it was the second issue...in a Food Lion no less. It looked really cool....so I randomly spent 5 bucks every month at Food Lion until I subscribed...
I got really really confused when I started reading it from the back...@_@ As lots of people do. I still feel ashamed of those first five minutes.
I can't really remember my first real manga purchase though oO;;;
Naruto was the first thing I read in SJ...Um...-racks brain- Maybe it was Whistle!...I dunno.
Now I've got 70 + volumes, and I'm still collecting. One finished series...-cries- And all of FMA so far. Awaitng vol 9 here in America and what not...
Digimon and Pokemon are always the factors to the first exposure to Japan...yadda yadda...
I've ranted >>;;;; So...
Yay!

I absolutely love Miyazaki films so I was really happy when I saw a copy of the Nausicaa manga in a local bookstore. I fell in love with the artwork in the story and began searching for older manga series with strong plot lines. I used to enjoy reading Galaxy Express 999 that used to run in a little anime magazine that I suscribed to. Unfortunately the only copy I found of the original manga series was in French and Japanese. I got into the Fullmetal Alchemist manga after watching a couple of the anime episodes; now I am reading her earlier work Stray Dog.
xironlung
I always loved comic books, but in grade 7 my friend showed my my first manga. Naruto! <333 ^^
I fell in love. And I've been reading different mangas ever since.
Another one of my friends always burns off episodes of different animes and sometimes we get together and watch it.
But my friend DJ showed me FMA. ^___^
InsaneFangirl
My friend Paige and I were together on a road trip when I was almost 14, almost 2 years ago. I was being nosy, (and bored) and looked in her bookbag. There I found "Fruits Basket Volume 1". Opened it up, to find "black and white comics". I thought it was the weirdest thing in the world, being backwards, but I couldn't stop reading it. I read it the whole way to our destination, and soon bought the whole series published so far. Then I watched the entire anime once I found out about it. Thus, I became hooked to manga.
Alxchemist
my brother made me watch case closed, and inuyasha was on before case closed so i started watching them. Lupin the 3rd was on after case closed at like 12:30 pm so i would watch that too. and my mom saw that i liked inuyasha a lot and brought the first 2 anti-manga inuyasha books. Then i picked up Flame of Recca and liked that (i now own all 12 vols) 2 years later........ i found stoptazmo and started reading online
thats my very interesting story
DarkHaze
Ever since I was born, there was
place where you can borrow mangas for cheap price,
like a library. I always been reading graphic novels.
ScarMySoul
The first manga that I got was Legal Drug vol 1. My friend Tiffany suggested that I should start reading the manga along with watch the anime so that I can see the difference, and over time I started to get more and more manga.

My dad was in the Navy, so we lived in Japan for a while, and stuff like Dragonball filtered its way onto the base in the form of pencil cases and posters and stuff. We couldn't tell what it was, but we thought it was cool. My friend called them "Japanese coloring books". happy.gif

Like probably a lot of people, though, I didn't get "into" anime until I was in the States again and caught some Sailor Moon on TV (give me a break! I was ten! ^^wink.gif...

The first manga I picked up that was in English was No Need For Tenchi! Volume...I think, uh, Seven or so.

Sweet topic, btw.

Hmmm...well, I'm not really sure. I think it was because when I was a kid, my mother will always buy me those thick 500 yen comic books so I won't bother her when she was in the temple.

I've always thought of Manga as simply Japanese graphic novels or comics. Being a fan of some American graphic novels and certainly of the newspaper funnies, I didn't "Know" to think anything different of Manga; odd format, but otherwise just more comics. Eventually I tried some out, starting with FullMetal Alchemist and was hooked. At first I stayed strictly to FMA, not wanting to try new series, till I gave Hellsing and Death Note a try, and since then I've been broadening my horizons in search of more series.

That aside, I know have a much higher opinion of Japanese Manga than I do of American graphic novels. Sure, they can be all over the place in terms of art, depth, story, etc., but I'd have to say the best Manga I've read is head and shoulders above what I've read in American comics.
BLue-FIsh
I was at the library and i was bored so I was wondering around and I was this person reading a book backwards... So I went up to her and asked her then she told me about anime and manga and stuff... It was after that I got hooked... tongue.gif
