I'm going to vote Lust/Sloth in the poll, simply because all but one of the others mess up one or more of my favorite pairings, and I can't see Envy (or Wrath) with 'anyone' very easily.

You've got a really interesting conversation going on here... I read almost all of this thread and I lol-ed many times....

I don't find most of the main slash pairings in FMA that appealing. Nothing wrong with them, just...not to my taste, I guess. Once I got over the 'age difference' thing, I actually found Roy/Ed rather...boring. Ditto Hughes/Roy, just because I get more enjoyment over seeing those characters just as friends rather then lovers. There was one case with a fic about Hughes and Roy that started out very interesting - and continued using the characters well - and then dropped in slash and a pointless sex scene or two for no apparent reason. It didn't 'ruin' the fic for me, it just felt tacked on.

Havoc/Roy I quite like...they're interesting characters and Havoc is the sort of person I could see Roy with, and vice versa.

Well, seeing as people above were mentioning Fury and the others...

Soley down to a writer on LJ, I discovered that I rather like Breda/Fury. Definitely not the norm amongst slash-fans, I know, but something about the way Chrstphrl writes it just works. Its made to seem plausible, and real. And it wasn't just his, either. Though, Mistressquickly did achieve the alarming feat of making me want to cry over a piece of fanfiction (was it *just* me who found 'Without Words' incredibly depressing? Yes? Okay then...)

So there's my slash-related confession. For *this* fandom at least. For the time being.

I doubt you can say you know anybody in real life that's actually pretended to cover it up... people that lie about that stuff would be really lame.

Although RoyxHughes is one of my most hated pairings, it's just fandom.

Fandom defies logic and/or canon. Or re-defines it depending on the fan in question. Many fans get around the Hughes/Roy technicalities by suggesting that they had a relationship before Hughes met Gracia (post-Ishbal random angst, mostly.... ), and that - slightly more plausibly when it comes to slashing characters - Roy's interest in the female sex is even more of a performance then it is already.

The only thing I don't get about Hughes/Roy is the number of writers who seem to use slash as an excuse to have two male characters have a close relationship. As though their canon platonic friendship wasn't good enough

Bisexuality exists. Reputation exists. You obviously don't know much about the world if you think the fact that people who live a lie to hide their sexuality is 'lame'. Especially if you are a military man with a reputation to keep up. Even in modern 'progressive' society, there is still a lot of shame and stigmatism to deal with, being openly gay. And to be in the military to boot, if an affair with another soldier were to be discovered, that would mean huge trouble for either of them.

There are people who lie and hide and deny to themselves what their natural urges are. There are people who fall into unexpected relationships circumstantially. There are gays an lesbians who marry because it is the socially expected thing to do, or sometimes because they truly honestly wish that perhaps falling in love will 'cure' them. And very often, they do love their spouse deeply, even if they are not sexually inclined toward his or her gender. There are people who live their lives believing they are 'totally gay' or 'totally straight' only to realize that they are a gray level of bisexual. There are gays who will have heterosexual relationships entirely because of the fact that they still wish to have children (something that most governments forbid by way of adoption for their orientation.)

It's more common than you think. After all, American society (and other societies of course, but American in paticular) isn't that accepting of homosexuals at all, and there are still many people in the world who view homosexuality as a 'disease'.


Just because he's married to a woman now doesn't mean Hughes didn't once date a man or two. I hate how some disapprovers of this pairing seem to not understand the concept of bisexuality.

I find HughesxRoy one of the more plausible Roy yaoi pairings. I love the idea of how they may've had some romantic history, and then ended up 'just friends'. You don't see that much slash where the two come out of a relationship still good friends. Not all relationships end up 'happily ever after, together forever' or 'we hate each other's guts and never want to see each other again', there are the ones where 'just friends' works. I find it sweet, and that is probably the biggest reason why pre-marriage HughesxRoy is my OTP.

Nah, they call those love/hate relationships. They're usually quite intriguing and normally I would be into them...
but I just can't stand Ed/Roy anymore (unless Ed is topping, then it's hilariously hawt!) mostly because of the fanartists using it as an excuse for shouta. :/ It bothers me nowadays.
Some of the art is still yummy tho. The one that had 'it's a love/hate relationship' or whatever written on it along with lots of roses comes immediately to mind. That was gorgeous.

The only FMA slash pairing I'm interested in is Ling x Edward.

Case in point: I've seen a Roy/Havoc doujin in which they both looked like five year olds.

Then again, I've also seen Roy/Havoc in which Roy had a tiny waist, impossibly wide feminine hips and his pecs looked like breasts. Didn't help that he was sighing and blushing and looking generally girly.

My Point: When you can make Havoc/Roy look unmanly, you can pretty much do the same to anything.

Ah, yes, that's where I tread on thin ice with my last statement. Cause I myself am known for making my Roy look rather girly (then again, all my guys look girly in the face and a little in the waist because my style is typically shoujo. But I'm trying to beat it out of me!) and I pleasure in making cute little comics where Maes, Roy and Riza are just 'puppies'.

But, I dunno, I like it when both characters are cute little boys (fluff!) but when you have Roy looking even older than usual, and Ed looking like a 7 year old...uh no thanks. That just doesn't get me squealing with glee.

Yaoi is focuses on the homosexual relationship between two males (like Roy x Ed).
Yuri is the female variation of yaoi (such as Rixa x Winry).

As a side note, the terms shonen-ai (boy pairings) and shoujo-ai (girl pairings) are a "lighter" version of yaio and yuri- meaning that while yaoi and yuri is usually more sexually explicit, shonen/shoujo-ai is umm.. fluffy (just kisses and hugs I guess..).

I like HughesRoy, Pre-Ishbal, mind you, though a little bit of before-marriage hughes-roy wouldn't hurt, and I love it when it's angsty, then there's also Elricest tough sexually explicit content crives me nuts and forces me to abandon it and maybe some HavocRoy. RoyEd is good as well, but I try to stay away from anything that orders on something adults must only see.

I used to be a EdWin fan and EdWin fan only, but some good fics(like Full Circle. Had a few loopholes and errors here and there, but still)converted me into a RoyEd fan. Of course, the significantly higher level of angst in RoyEd had something to do with it, too. I still like and support EdWin in the manga, but I prefer RoyEd(or EdRoy...lol)in general now.

Before I stumbled upon this forum, I have never even considered there being any other pairings than the canon.

xD Omg I should be shot for suggesting that. I chose EdxAl anyways. The very first FMA fanfiction I stumbled upon was an Elricest one; and it was written amazingly. I never looked back since. xD

Out of all the ones listed on the poll, I think my favorite is Roy/Ed or Envy/Ed. However, my favorite that isn't on the poll is Ling/Ed. I have no idea why, but that pairing appeals to me for some odd reason. ^^; I'll admit, it's a bit of crack!pairing, but I think they'd be a really interesting couple.

Al/Ed. The cool thing about the anime was that Ed and Al were close to each other and no one else (and it's fun to run away with that..).
