How can anyone think this isn't cute?

i would prefer to think that the FMA dogs are characters themselves. don't you think FMA would be rather boring without them? Al wouldn't be as cute if he didn't have such a fetish with cats. hawkeye would be rather dull w/o black hayate to make her more "human". same goes to alexander who made nina's character more adorable. den made winry, ed and al more "normal".

well, at least in the manga. after all, though they are just dogs, they all show individual personalities that make them stand out. otherwise, they'd just be animals in the background.

My favorites are Black Hayate and Alexander. We don't get to see a whole lot of Den either in the anime or the manga.

Alexander's just a big softie. I wish I had a dog like that growing up. He was Nina's only friend until the Elrics came along and he watched over and protected her I'm sure.

Black Hayate is cute and quite useful at times (remember in the manga, he went after Glutonny). And he's so cute when he's pictured with Riza.

I also like Den a lot but Black Hayate is cuter and funnier. I just didn't connect with Alexander for some reason (maybe because I saw that episode first and when I watched the whole series from the beginning, subconciously I did not connect with Alexander because I knew what was going to happen).

Yes, the dog are characters because they have individual personalities and adds great comic relief to the series. If dogs are not to be considered characters, then Ming's Panda should not be considered one either. Dogs (and Pandas AND cats) should not have to be able to speak in order for them to be considered characters.
