<Closing the thread since the thread author who's also the person to give answer to all the questions has been gone since Dec. 1 2005. 03/26/07 ~Tombow>

I am not usually such a "proud" person with my intellectual abilities, but I challenge all of you out there, ask me an animal question that I don't know!!
(Btw, I've been studying for this for 14 years, well, not exactly for this, but...)
«°~Gluttony™~°»
Cool from someone that don't like animals to an animal lover my question is

why are dogs so smart to be able to learn commands such like Roll over or beg or whatever protect n such

but they can't even clean up after themselves like cats, they'll shit anywhere
anime_manga_fan
Can Cats understand us?

Also, do stray cats find Al and hitch a ride in his Suit of Armour? XD
Envy's lil' miniskirt
Which is the solifugid more closely related too?

Spider, scorpion or centipede?

And you can't look it up!
WhiteMike
@«°~Gluttony™~°»: The reason dogs have the ability to learn certain tricks is because people are classical conditioning them. When you are trying to teach a dog a trick, you usually give them a treat if they do well, right? Well, once they master the "trick", they are just basically doing the trick for a treat, thats it. I love dogs, but they are not the smartest pets out there(unless you think that getting all the free food you want is smart tongue.gif ) Also, they do sometimes clean themselves, usually around there, ah hem, rectal area. But they do not dislike water too much, so they will tolerate baths.
@anime_manga_fan: Cats do not really understand us, they just understand the tone of our voice, same as dogs. They do listen quite intently though. If you were to say "April (my cat's name), wanna eat?", she has already registered the tone of my voice, knowing that I am going to feed her, etc.
@Envy's lil' miniskirt: Wow, like to be challenging don't yah? laugh.gif I believe it is a venomous spider, right? (and btw, i didn't cheat biggrin.gif )
Envy's lil' miniskirt
Bzzt wrong!

Solifugids are part of the arachnid family and even though their common name is sun spider or camel spider they are a closer relation to the scorpion.

Actually cats can understand words mine know their name, come when they are called (mostly, depends on their mood) and know the word 'off'. So cats can understand words as well as tone of voice.
alchemistgirl zero
How much could a wood chuck chuck if a wood chuck could chuck wood?
WhiteMike
@Envy's lil' miniskirt: Theres no such thing as a Solifugids, I assumed that you were talking about Solpugides, which are venomous ants or spiders, or basically any arachnid that has a segmented abdomen and very powerful fangs(and I know that ants aren't arachnids).
And cats don't understand words. Next time you call your cat, try and change your tone of voice and see what happens, believe me I've done this wink.gif .

LOL I know this for a fact as well, My ma had a cat named Nash she would say he knows his name, i had to correct that lol, i would call the cat, in many tones, it reconises the N and sh part if it heard first NNNNNN it waits for the SH part to realise that means come to the source of that noise

but this cat also a little bit smarter thou lol, i'm always mean to the cat cause for some odd reason it never liked me and always hissed at me for no reason so I toyed with it, so when it notices that it's me that made that noise to him, usually he didn't come lol, unless he looked at me and thought i wanted to be nice

but how i proved that the cat reconised the name, is this

I would say NNNNNNNNNNNNN which got his attention, then ot

did the same NNNNNNNNNNN o SH in other words I said Nosh and he came

oh but that is considered smart, even cats are smart enough to know when to come to someone when they call, just cause it's the sound of the tone that you use to call them and not reconising the words themselves don't mean that it's any less smart

now answer me this, what makes a person smart

Example two seperate people
The Scenerio is this: Cooking Becan on a pan on your hot stove.

Man Number 1:
Guy grabs the becan by his hand but it is so hot it burns him making him drop the becan back into the pan, he goes for it again and does this over and over and keeps burning himself.

Man Number 2:
Guy grabs the becan by his hand but it is so hot it burns him making him drop the becan back into the pan, he starts to go back to pick it up but remembers hot hot can't touch with hand, so he grabs a utensal to pick it up for him and put it on his plate.

now you tell me which man was smarter

Dogs Learn and get smart cause they remember,
OoO By doing this I do this i get a reward hense the snack.

ok i will keep doing this when the owner does that with his hands or makes that sound whichever, that is learning and when you learn you become smart lol

I have alot of questions.

-Why do dogs eat there own poo?
-Why are Dolphans so friendly?
-How many pounds dose is the average Grizzly bears skull?
-If I were to kick a Penguine what would its reaction be?
-What other foods do Pandas eat other than bamboo?
-Same question ^ but with Koalas and eucoliptus leaves?
-How thick is a Rhino's skin?
-If you hit a Rhino with a ping-pong ball would he feal it?
-Are Octopuse ever friendly to each other, like dogs that have grown together?
-Can Giraffe be born with Dwarfism?
-Can a Girrafe vomit?
-What is the average amount of Antelope in a herd?
-Why can field mice eat anything but those white store mice can't?

actually, i consulted my friend Google, and he (it) says that indeed there exist creatures called Solifugids.

Solifugid

Me got Photo!
Envy's lil' miniskirt
WhiteMike my friend you don't know who you are dealing with.

There is such a thing called a solifugid and I would know because I used to have one. A simple google search would of proved to you there is such an animal

I've worked in the pet industry for a good part of my life and have owned cats for 14 years. They can understand word just not as well as dogs do. Or, maybe they can but cats are independent so they don't acknowledge it to the extent dogs do. Some people have trained cats to perform in circus acts and I'm sure there are some word commands used, how else would the cat know which trick to perform.

It didn't take long to stump the master... I still want my answers though, lol.
Luckyalchemy27
What color (the shortened term) is a horse that has a brown coat and a black mane and tail with black points?
«°~Gluttony™~°»
Guess he didn't know as much as he thought lol
hitokiri
what animal has the longest proportional stride?
WhiteMike
@Envy's lil' miniskirt: lol, fine, i will gratiously admit defeat (this time), I looked in my Insect/Arachnid book and couldn't find that word, so i found one that was closest. Next time I will be more prepared for the tougher questions. I apologise to anyone who I let down tongue.gif
@Username05: one at a time, one at a time, lol, ok.
1. Dogs eat their own excrements for numourous reasons, one is that in the past, if they didn't hide their scent then they could be picked off by a more tough opponent. two, they may try to take in any extra nutrients that they can get, as to improve their health (dont ask)
2. Many people believe that all Dolphans are always friendly, but this is not the case. In fact, in the wild, dolphans are actually very agressive. They are quite protective of their pod. Dolphans just seem very nice becuse most of the ones that we see are domesticated.
3. How many pounds does a grizzly bears skull weigh? oh god, ummm, lets just say, on average, 56 pounds.
4. Well, you would have to kick that penguin pretty hard, because if you kicked it in the but, it wouldn't really feel it.
5. Pandas dont really need to eat anything other then bamboo (which they eat 20-40 pounds a day of), but they have also been known to eat grass and occasionally small rodents. In captivity however, they can eat rice mixture, high-fiber biscuits, vegetables and fruits, such as apples.
5. Koalas dont really ever come down from the trees, so they only eat eucoliptus leaves, which actually provides their food and water needs.
6. The rhinos skin is not as thick as some people think, its really just their hides that are quite thick, sometimes as much as 2 1/2 inches.
7. Depends on how hard you hit it, but most likely no.
8. Octopus's are solitary creatures, but they are most of the time very tolerant of each other.
9. Yes a giraffe can be born with dwarfism, because dwarfism is just a genetic disease, so i assume that they could
10. Yes a giraffe can vomit, i have actually seen one do it (shudders)
11. Oh god, umm, lets just say, a single male can have a herd of about 5-65 females and young, so picture multiple male groups
12. Field mice can't eat white mice's food because they dont have the "stomach" for it. it would be like you trying to eat grass, wouldn't sit too well, would it?
@Luckyalchemy27: Horse's aren't exactly my fortee, so ill give it a shot. Is it roan? or bay? hmmm... tell me if im close
@«°~Gluttony™~°»: i would have to agree

sorry that took me so long, i got bombarded
@hitokiri: is it the jack rabbit? proportional by size and distance between steps right? please clarify
Username05
Thank you for the answers, now more questions!

-If you live in Australia is it legal to own a Koala as a pet?
-^Same question but with China and Panda.
-In a Panda VS. Koala battle, wich would win?
-What happends if a fish losses its school?
-Dose music affect animals? If so what kind of music dose what?
Here is music I listen to, what do you think?

you're using a book? that takes all the challenge out of it... i mean anyone can answer questions with the use of a book.

@hitokiri: is it the jack rabbit?
yes

name the two compounds in a firefly that cause bioluminescence, without the use of references.
WhiteMike
@Username05: Love your pics btw, ok, here it goes:
1&2- Im going to join 1 and 2 cuz their basically the same answer. Legally, no your not allowed to have them as pets because their registered as wild and endangered animals. But, im sure if you tried hard enough you could get one off the black market for cheap.
3. Panda Vs. Koala - - Panda destroys the Koala off the face of the planet, its mass is more then 5 times the koala.
4. If a fish leaves its school, then it will continue to swim until it finds the school again.
5. I dont think that there has been any real scientific research done on this subject, but I do remember a certain experiment:mice were taught once how to go through this maze to get cheese (and were timed for speed). The mice were then split into 3 different enviornments, #1 had continuous hard rock playing. #2 had pop music playing. #3 had classical music playing. They had the mice listen to their different music for a couple of days. Then the mice had to try and go through the maze again. The mouse that was listening to pop music had the same time. The mouse that was listening to rock was 2 mins slower, and the mouse that was listening to classical music was a min faster.
Cool, eh?

oh, and horse was pretty cool, wasn't too bad

I know, i know, my power kept going out cuz of a storm, sorry

Darn you, WhiteMike. You were right, it was bay.

Try and get this one. It's a horse term. How high is one hand?

Wow, phew, ok, umm, isn't it like 4 inches? or is it 5? no, no, i think its 4 inches? right? huh.gif
Luckyalchemy27
*stamps foot* You're right. Four inches. Here's a harder one. What are the names of the three foundation stallions of the Thoroughbred breed?

Lucky, lucky me. I did a project on this in grade 11. Its the Byerly Turk, the Godolphin Arabian, and the Darley Arabian. unless I'm wrong?
Luckyalchemy27
You're right, and you had better not be looking these up. I am going to keep trying until I stump you, dammit!

You have a mare and a stallion and you want a palomino foal. What color should the parents be? (this is your best bet for a palomino foal)
alchemist x
Get this one.

Exactly how many spicies of animal are known to man.
Quistis88
Here's a question that someone was bound to ask sooner or later:

Do animals have souls?

i'm actually getting the horse questions correct! ohmy.gif glad to see i still remember stuff from my horse-obsessed younger days. biggrin.gif

I can answer that for you

some think they do and some don't that's a question i don't think anyone can truly answer cause it's really a matter of an opinion like do people have souls even thou that's more believable then animals for most anyways
WhiteMike

Do humans have souls?
@alchemist x: there is no real answer to this question, because many species have not been discovered yet, and a lot of species are actually being discovered every day. But, if you really want to know, there's about 5-15 million different species on earth.
@hitokiri: I promise you that I only looked in a book for that question(The sunspider one), manly because I didn't recognize the word that she was giving me, so I just had to see if it was actually correct. Im not cheating any of your questions, or you, please believe me when I say that.
ok, your question was the firefly thing. ok, the 2 components are luciferase and luciferan. those join to make oxyluciferan, wich produces light, etc, etc.
@Luckyalchemy27: Oh god, another horse question. ok, to get a palomino foal, the parents would have to be a light colour(like chestnut), and another palomino. I could be totally wrong, but thats the only combo that makes sense to me. Let me have it...

Yes, yes, horse questions. My animal knowledge is mostly stuff about horses.

Your best bet would be a palomino mare and a chestnut stallion. I will continue to ask questions until I totally stump you!

What are four different kinds of Appaloosa patterns?
WhiteMike
@Luckyalchemy27: Im not sure I know all of this one. I love their striped hooves, though. Ok, Ill give this a shot. I know that there are 6 kinds, but I might screw their names up. Blanket, Varnish, Snow...flake?, and Tiger? I know its one of the big cats. Maybe its leopard...
Luckyalchemy27
The four kinds that I can remember right now are leopard, snowflake, frost, and blanket. So you're close enough, I guess.

Rrrr!! I must stump you!

Name a horse breed that starts with Z!
WhiteMike
@Luckyalchemy27: ZEBRA!!!!!!!!!!!! (watch Im wrong)
Luckyalchemy27
The answer is Zhemaichu (I think that's how you spell it).

YEEEESS! I WIN! FINALLY! Bwa ha ha...
WhiteMike
lol, good job! tongue.gif im suprised i did that well
Quistis88
My cousin asked this the other day and I am curious, so I must ask the Animal Master.

What happens if a kangaroo and a raccoon mate with each other?
Username05
HAHAHAHA!!!!
That is most likely imposible! But hilariouse!!!
WhiteMike
@Quistis: If a racoon and kangaroo mate with each other? I don't believe that they can, because they are different species. Even if they could somehow mate, there would probably be a large chance that the fetus would be infertial(horse + donkey = mule), or it might even be too weak to pass through the birth cycle(like some species of plant), or, the body of the mother would attack the sperm from the father, etc, etc. Not to mention all of the prezygotic barriers between the two. no, I dont believe that they can mate, theres just to much going against that union.

wow, mike, this thread is really interesting!
Thank you very much!
but i have got also some questions:

1. The dog is the descendant of the wolf, but how could humans let the dog be their pet?! And did they always "search" for somebody(human) who they could be loyal to?

2. Were cats(who are descendants of the leopards etc) "always" here on Earth and did the ppl in Egypt have them as pets already?

3. do cats really have "love-feelings" towards humans or do they only use humans as a "tree" in order that they can scratch themselves?

4. Why are cats so tidy?

Thank you!

1. The dog is a decendent of the wolf, but they weren't too hard to domesticate. All you had to do was find a wolf that was abandoned by its pack, feed it, condition it to work for you(for more food of course), and thats about it. One more thing that they could have done is use the process of artificial selection, by only mating the wolfs that were most helpful and nicest to their masters.
2. Actually, in Egypt, it was Cheetah's who were first domesticated. And if I'm understanding your question, then cats have generally been around for 4000 years or more.
3. lol, cats do show a sense of compassion to their owners, same as dogs. If you get a cat early enough in their life, then they will basically see you as their parent and provider. And I don't believe that cats are just using their owners, because cats aren't parasites, lol. (my cats a bitch though)
4. There are numourous reasons why cats are so tidy. As I have mentioned before, they have to be clean creatures so that they do not attract their preys attention while hunting. This involves licking themselves clean, always defecating in one spot(yes this occured before litter boxes), usually hiding their prey, etc. The ability to be neat and clean is essential for cats to be successful hunters.
