-blinks- So many reply's...but still. I think they custom-make the uniforms I mean, if Hawkeye wanted Hayate to wear one they'd probably have one! Anyway, he ain't that small...well...maybe he is, but it doesn't matter! Being small can be a good thing! Especilly in hide-and-go seek!
Anyway, I think it's just because He's a State Alchemist, and he isn't required too. I mean, does Tucker? There is no one elsee to use as an example, because either they do where a uniform, or I just don't know. Either way he looks good in one.

He's not enrolled in the military and he'd be to young to.
Armstrong is a military officer so he has to!

There are no such a small uniform that fits him xD There is also an original scan that Ed tried to put on Armstrong's uniform -giggle- (of course that won't suits him)
But yah. Edward is a State Alchemist, which is also dog of military. State Alchemist doesn't require uniforms. Like Platinum refered, Shou Tucker was also State Alchemist only, he doesn't need to wear uniform

He probably doesn't wear uniform because everyone hates the dogs of the military, and
the people who hate the military wouldn't give Ed any info.
Or he just might not like it. Since he doen't like being a dog in the first place and all.

I've always wondered this myself...
However, personally I think he looks better in his regular clothes. XD

Ed's a Major in the military, the same rank as Armstrong.
All State Alchemists are in the Military.

You only saw him at home though that hardly backs up the belief that SA's don't have wear uniforms. Hughes is an Officer but he didn't wear his uniform around the house.
I'm sticking with "No uniform in his size" theory. Saying he doesn't wear it because people don't like the military is stupid. Roy and the others wear their uniforms. There isn't even evidence that people dislike the Military. The only people who did were in one mining village that was being run by a corrupt officer.

They custom-made one for Armstrong (well, they probably don't have uniforms his size lying around),
why can't they do that for Ed? The military is fully capable of it.
Besides, Pinako and Winry didn't like the military either. The people that lost limbs because of the war might have
some negative feelings toward the military, too. Mustang and others probably wear the uniforms because they stay at the headquarters and not wondering around like Ed. He needs info about the philosopher's stone, and if the non-military people know he's in the military, they might refuse to give him any information. If they dislike the military, why should they help the dogs?

*Head desk*
That's a very small minority and it still remains a dumb reason not to wear the uniform.

Yeah..the famous Fullmetal Alchemist, one of the most famous State Alchemists of the time. I'm sure no one will know who he is...

Well for a start we don't have any real evidence that the majority of the population dislikes the military. In fact Roy apparently has quite a few fans among the people.
As for why they would tell him;
1) He's known for being "an Alchemist of the people"
2) Who is going to argue with some one who can have the ground swallow you up and not leave a trace?
I'll spot you that not wearing a uniform draws less attention to him (Al does that enough already) but you really need to get more logical reasons to back up your ideas.

Here's my reasons:
I always thought it was because he was a State Alchemist, and not really a soldier.
All short jokes aside, he was very young and they might not have had his size.
It might have been dangerous for him to be so young and go around in a military uniform. Plus, people aren't exactly fond of the military there.
Ed (along with Al, Winry, and Pinako) didn't like the military and he only joined to be a State Alchemist. He might not have wanted to wear one.
But, even though I'm not fond of BBI at all, I always thought Ed looked good in a uniform.

He'd rather not associate himself with the military any more than necessary.
Plus his other outfit is way hotter!!!!

Lol i really like the pics from 'that game' Ed looks hot haha, i wish Arakawa would draw him in it just once lulz
Anyway I was actually just thinking this today and then I see a thread and i was zomg XD
The small thing well I don't think thats it, its the miltary of a country, I'm inclined to think everyone important has their outfit custom made anyway, i wouldnt think it was hard to make him one...
but if the small thing was right its probably because he refused to let them take his measurements XD in fact very probable, remember him in that omake? haha
and lastly, Ed isn't really around much doing the dutys other soldiers do, and probably wouldnt want the extra attention and hassle of wearing it, and he'd probably get more greif over his shortness if people saw such a tiny soldier XD hes too proud to be associated with the milatary that much

There is a very good reason Ed doesn't wear a military uniform...
*looks around*
Whispering: They don't make them that small.

EDIT: Darn it! Someone beat me to that joke!

My guess is because he hated the military and only joined to get Al back his body and he didn't want to wear the uniform. No one complained (that we know of) of him not wearing it. Of course, they also might not have had his size, but I think they would have one made if it was really important that he wear it everyday. He would have to wear it if the Fuhrer ordered him to anyhow, or there was something with another country that was formal. It was highly unlikely that they just didn't make them small enough. I mean, look at Fuery, he's only a little taller than Ed and he wears a uniform!

I think that would be because he is very young. Like Roy said, he still wasn't 16 yo yet at the start of FMA. At 16 years old age then he must join the military. Roy said that also.

There are other alchemists and people aside from Ed who work in the miltary, and dont wear the uniform, such as kimberly and tucker, doctor nox still works with the miltary too right? I think its more Ed doesn't wish to be associated with the miltary more than he has to, he doesnt need a uniform saying to everyone what he is, and he travles a lot, a uniform wouldnt be good for his kind of lifestyle, from a practical point of view and as i said before, everyone of any worth probably has their uniforms custom made anyway, im sure one could be made to tailour Ed but he probably refuses to have his measurements taken, opposed to not having his size XD

I thought it was because he was more of a field State Alchemist rather than a part of the actual branch of the military. While he may be a military dog, he doesn't really hold an actual position in the military itself. Like... with Roy and the others, they have their actual ranks, while he only holds an equivalent rank due to being a State Alchemist...?
... I don't think I worded that very well. Basically, it's like he's hired by the military, but not really part of the main branch of the military, hence he isn't required to wear a uniform. I mean, Shou Tucker was also a State Alchemist, but he doesn't wear a uniform either. I think it's also partially because they're more on the research/field work division as well, where they aren't required to be in the office 24/7, hence wearing the uniform doesn't really have an effect.
Oh, and his age as well might have factored in it. He's probably still too young to be considered as one of the ranking officers, hence no uniform.

Ed doesn't wear the uniform for a couple of reasons,
1. He has never been in an actual war. (The conflict in Lior does not count.)
2. He is actually too young to offically be a ranking officer. He is 15/16 through out most of the seires. You have to be 18 to join the military.
3. It maybe an act of definence.
4. It would give Izumi another excuse to beat the crap out of him.
