.... I seriously don't think that Cantonese version of Melissa is that bad, since it's usage of words are pretty clever and reflects the original version (Porno Graffini's version) quite well.
I do agree that there are 2 ~ 3 lines that sound pretty awkward, but otherwise, the translation is pretty decent. It doesn't hurt to sing that song either.
... and you know what? It's not fair to just bash the Cantonese version Melissa's lyrics simply because it's in Cantonese, instead of Japanese... To be truthful, how many of you fully understand the Japanese lyrics? How do you know that the Cantonese lyrics is bad if you aren't even too sure of what the Japanese lyrics says? (online fan translations are not always accurate.)
Moreover, to create lyrics, many things have to be considered, such as making it rhyme with the song more... Cantonese is a very complicated Language. Cantonese has "8 tones" so it's harder to sing with Cantonese. (Mandarin has 4 tones, not too sure about Japanese but it is definately less than 8 tones).
Do you think you can create a better Cantonese version Melissa lyric then?
Many of you said that the Cantonese version of Melissa sounded funny, but really, it's because you UNDERSTAND the lyrics. It's in your mother tongue. You have always listened to the Japanese version of it, got used to it, and probably doesn't remember what the Japanese lyrics said... heck, some part of the Japanese lyrics actually sound really funny when I read the translation...
so, let's take another example then. Tobira no Mukou he, its first line is "Bokura wa imademo sakenderu" which should translate to "We were constantly screaming"........
.....
ok, that sounds totally WEIRD (even tho Tobira is my favourite FMA song).
Imagine that being sang in Cantonese.... OMG.
So... if Tobira gets translated and put into Cantonese lyrics with direct translation....... heh, that is gonna sound awful.
I wonder what kind of genius will be able to get a good Cantonese version fo this song...
ok, back to Canto Melissa...
Why it's good compared to other HK anime songs?
Eason Chan is at least, a rather famous singer in HK. He does at least have a certain level of reputation. TVB didn't just use a random voice actor to sing the song (which they did with other anime), so it's a good thing! This shows that TVB shows respect for FMA! so...
please, don't just go bash Canto Melissa simply because it's Canto... and the lyrics, since it tried to contain the originality from the translation, so it sounds a bit awkward... Judging from its vocabulary usage, I can tell that the one that wrote the lyric did spend quite some time to write it, so, please respect it because it IS your mother language!
PS: Frozen Ice Alchemist: If you claim to be able to sing better than him, then why are you here, instead of entering a singing contest or actually become a singer then? Talking big like that is a no-no.
PS2: nope, I am not an Eason Chan fan, in fact, I am a Garnet Crow addict so I only listen to that band's music most of the time... but I am simply pissed how you all just bashed the song without giving it any deep thought.

.....Well if you compare his voice with some of the older singers, the older people will sound better. And I am really busy at this time of the year, my sis is going to AUS to study, I have a piano exam next month... But I'm not really sure if TVB does respect FMA;perhaps your correct about it though

... FMA is only an anime... getting Eason Chan to sing it is already really good.
and I don't think I have ever seen any singers older than age of 40 doing anime theme songs.... (and no, I don't want any of them doing anime theme songs either.)

I found this chinese version is GENIUS!! Most people dislike it because they don't understand chinese (Do they understand japanese version either if it were without sibtitle? Hmmm, I guess not. So it would be a lame reason for not liking the chinese version). But I do understand chinese, I found it very funny! (I listened to it in youtube, but only TV size. So could someone be so kind and upload it again? T-T I want to download this song SO BADLY!)
I'm just kinda disappointed because the lyrics is different from the japanese version. Oh well, I liked the song!

Indeed this is the lyrics I heard from the chinese version OP in youtube. Was wondering why the lyrics from page one is so different. Thank you

It's still a big disappoint since it's different from the japanese lyrics. I meant their meaning..
Awwwwh I wanna watch the chinese dub now >w< It must be awesome too! >w<
