@JoshP: Yeah, I honestly never even noticed they have bass... I don't even know any of their names aside from Billy Joe. They should get a better bassist perhaps, like D'arcy Wretzky

Not every band can be as blessed as the Pumpkins were.

Smashing Pumpkins? They get much love from me and everyone who listens to them.
I love the SP

they get all my love too XD

Greenday are are Pop-rock for wannabe rebelious early-mid teen girls.
Slashrose1010
Jun 7 2006, 03:57 PM
They're not as wannabe rebelious as a lot of other bands. It is just that their instruments are very simple and their lyrics aren't anything special. I find some of their stuff catchy, but I would never call them brilliant.
True punk rock has been lost to the current generation... for the most part. I have some friends who listen to actual punk.

I liked their earlier work

There recent albums however haven't really garnered much attention from me.

What I don't understand with everyone is why they're so amazed with Mike Dirnt singing and playing bass at the same time. He just plays straight eighth-note runs and changes from not to note every measure while he sings. Anyone can do that.

yeah, even I can do that (probably) and I completely suck with stringed instruments and music in general. If I'm not mistaken, I think Hansi used to play bass and sing as well for BG. That's a lot more difficult.

There are plenty of bassists who do vocals. I think the most impressive is Ross Dolan from Immolation, because of all the complex time changes that band uses, plus he doesn't use a pick.

Actually, to be honest, I can only play and sing eighth notes run myself as well on a guitar.

My Bio teacher said it takes a great amount of practice to get the handling of it. I'm determined to overcome it because mediocrity really bugs the crap out of me.

Only good bassists use their fingers.

They were good like in the beginning, but ever since they went political with their music, it went downhill.

Yeah that is so true. I liked their song When I Come Around, that's one of their oldest, it's basiclly the only good one. I do like American Idiot, the rest of their songs kinda suck.

Not really, 'When I Come Around' is off the album Dookie, which is their third album. It's one of the oldest songs to have done well, the first being Longview. Actually some of my favourite songs are from the album 'Kerplunk'.

Some of their newer works are okay, but i prefer the older songs like basket case. The only one i really cannot stand is wake me up when september ends.

I've loved these guys since high school. (And for me, that was a LOOONG time ago!)
Saw them in concert in '95. Billie Joe mooned the crowd. XD
I do agree that their older stuff was better. If anyone here hasn't picked up the album "Kerplunk", DO IT!! It was their last release before they got signed to a major label (and produced "Dookie"...) It's very punk-ish, and raw. LOOOVE the song "Christie Road." <3
Their newer stuff leaves much to be desired IMO. Last album I actually bought was "Nimrod", although "American Idiot" did impress me at some parts...
Oh, Bille Joe... if only you could convince more men to wear eyeliner...

*maybe shows age knowing older Green Day?*
Who Wrote Holden Caulfield and 2000 Light Years Away are also pretty darn good, as of course is Christie Road. Only thing I will say for Kerplunk is I prefer the later version of Welcome to Paradise...same song just clearer sound.

Well, okay, that's a lie. Their old[er] songs are great, like When I Come Around, and my personal favorite, Basket Case. Everything off American Idiot sucks. I writhe in pain whenever I hear them.
Wanna know what's worse? MY DAD LIKES THEM. THE NEW CRAP. Holiday and Boulevard of Broken Dreams are his favorites. GOD, WHY? Why couldn't he like the older stuff?! D:

I must admit I like When I Come Around and Good Riddance, but other than that, most of their music is utter and pure garbage. Their older stuff was better, but even a lot of that was crap.
