Alright, I made sure to get the episode number right this time!

This is a great, action-packed episode as Ed is determined to find the secrets of the 5th Laboratory, but he has to get past the guard first...who happens to b a soul attached to armor just like Al. Ed's got a bit of a handicap though since his auto-mail is starting to malfunction since that dumb baka Winry didn't finish the job in episode 17!

Meanwhile Al is dealing with the other troublesome guard...who kinda sounded...familiar... wink.gif wink.gif wink.gif

I know who it is but i won't tell. biggrin.gif *ducktapes mouth shut*

Great, more action based episode this week. Though there was a real noticeable <censored for the kiddies>-up on the part of the English dub this week. So even though I enjoy the English dub, I'm not going to deny when they do screw-up.
Kinbari-chan
Good episode. Did notice some totally made up dialogue in some parts that were not in original version or dialogue that was completly changed, but anyway I did enjoy the episode.

Well I have to admit I am shocked smile.gif. What was the screw up? Was it something with the Barry/Al scenes. I felt there was sometthing missing when Al revealed to Barry that he was like him.

This defintely ranks up there with one of my favorite episodes. Very well done. Ed's performance as always was top notch. Al did really well with the angsty parts in the second half and Barry was absolutely wonderful. Slicers' VAs weren't my favorite but the fight made up for that. Overall I don't have any complaints, except some lines were spoken a little too fast.

Barry's still as messed up, but serves as comedic relief. It's a shame he didn't get the same treatment in the manga, he was an riot.

But speaking old friends, next week marks the return of another lunatic the Elrics met & will see for episodes to come. Only this guy is more messed up than crazy Barry in terms of body AND mind.

When Barry was talking to Al and Barry was talking about why he should be scared of him. During the conversation, Al removes his helmet to show that he has is a soul attached to a suit of armor as well. They changed it to where Barry isn't screaming and shocked because of the way he sees Al. It just came off as very awkward.

I noticed that...but it seemed kind of comical and WTF, imo. Also, Al seemed a little over exagerated when Barry told him his momories were fake. I guess it would make sense, but it sounds exagerated still. As for guard, the two brothers, I think they should've just said "brother" instead of "older brother" "younger brother" etc. It works in Japanese, but not much in English. *nodd* Still liked it
In the manga, Envy and Lust show up and kill Slicer before he tells Ed something important about the Philosopher's Stone.....Maybe that will happen in the next episode.
I thought it was okay, could've been better. I was hoping for an appearance from Scar.
Kao
The guy who voiced Al, wasn't really good. Thought it could be better, sounded err, 'stale'..
CursedAnubis
This episode was pretty interesting, and now that I go back and watch the part where Al shows Barry that he's hollow, it does look like a dubbing mistake. However, I noticed something that Ed said, about tuning the iron in the blood to match the armor's. Didn't Ed use his own blood to bind Al's soul? So wouldn't that me he had attuned his own soul to the armor and not Al's?

Here's some episode captures, enjoy!

i rarely have time to watch the english episodes b/c of schoolwork. But I watched this episode b/c i love the part with al and barry. this of course didn't happen in the dub so when al lifts off his helmet it makes no sense. actually... barry never really notices he is empty so then he suddenly knows al is empty. i was extremely disappointed. i also think the older/younger brother thing works on in japanese. yup... that's it. and I also decided winry sounds sooooo much older than ed (meaning ed is way too young sounding).
LoMXD
The only part I didn't like was when "Berry the butcher " told Al all those things about his memories.
Ed wouldn't do that would he?

Oh and I hate seeing Ed get hurt. I cringed at several thoughts if he got hurt more than three times.

I was shocked to find that the guy Al was fighting was the same guy who tried to kill ed and Winry three years ago.
TheToe Alchemist
Sweet ep. this one goes in my favs list.
But the ppl that conpare the original to the dubs..i see why you guys rag on the dubs mistakes..cuz you see the original as the right way it was made and it is.
But for ppl like me who have only seen the dubs and not the original
i see the dubs as the way they were made ..i know there not but thats how i see it
and I dont know why they would cut parts out of the eps. that seem wrong and i hope they dont kill the story doing that.
Steel Alchemist
No she did not! Poor Ed lost a lot of blood, he is lucky to be alive. He attacked Slicers body at the last minute. NO 66 is screwed up. Barry the Chopper?? He is not the biggest threat to Al however.
yes, scar will appear in the next episode...and Lust killing Slicer will also happen in either the next episode or the one after that...no worries... up until chapter 15/episode 25, the series is quite loyal to the manga.
Iron is iron, there are no sub-catagories of it. Therefore, Ed wouldn't have to attune it. I think that Ed's blood simply served as a conduit b/w Al's human soul and the metal armor (blood is both a "life force" and contians metal).

But then agian, the part about being able to manipulate the memory of the person might explain why Barry and the Slicers stayed around as gaurdians and didn't go off on rampages.

But, who really knows (except for the ppl that have seen all the eps)?

Becuase I never saw him and I want too. I liked how Ed took apart the younger slicer, he would have died if it wasent for Scar. I knew it was Barry the previous episode becuase he said "Let me drain their marrow," it was so obvious lol. I would like to get the title of the song they played when Ed beat the Slicers and they started talking.

I loved this episode, i don't care if they messed up a few parts, this one will always be one of my favorites.
Ed's fight with Slicer was suspensefull (sp?) I caught myself crying when Ed was almost killed, and then his little thought about how he could not give up the fight.
But I do believe that Al was a little to dramatic. If I were him I would just be thankful that I were alive. =p

Oaishu Ed did die. You just didn't see the blupers laugh.gif
fullmetal_gradstudent
It feels like they left something out during the scene when Ed's worried he may actually die at the hands of the Slicer. When watching the original, I really got the feeling Ed was a scared kid confronting his own mortality in an almost disbelieving way; I don't think the sub does justice to the gravity of the situation for Ed.
LunarMoon
I doubt that. Ed had been in several near death situations, this includes both of the Scar fights.

"Hah WELL NOW KNOW YOUR WEAKNESS!"
"I know yours too."
"ACCK! WELLYOU DON'T KNOW WHERE MY BLOOD SEAL IS!"
"you don't know where mine is either.

that part was so funny. and Alwas just dodging away, that was hilairious.
but still ,me no likey seeing Ed get hurt

[B][I] How was ANYONE shocked that number 66 was Barry. His voice was and is easily recognized. Atleast in the American version. As for the Japanese, I've only seen 1-4 in Japanese. I watch and record all of the FMA episodes on [Adult Swim] on my DVR cable box, and when they come out on DVD with dub's I buy those, watch them in American, American with the exact Japanese translations as subtitles, and in Japanese with both kinds of subtitles. I also watch every single thing on the DVD, including the Japanese commercial things. But seriosuly... I've watched every single episode shows on [Adult Swim] atleast 10 times, most of them 20 times or more... I watched episode 20 four times straight while drawing the picture of Ed with his shirt ripped and metal arm w/ sword from the little book in the DVD case... I must be one strange little obsessive 13 year old. I'm going to be ridiculed for being 13, arent I.

And in reply to one of the much earlier posts, the person who voices Al in the dubbed version of FMA is a 12 year old boy. Ha, he's younger than me. Anyway, you can't really expect too much, especially when theres no facial expression on a SUIT OF ARMOUR to base the tone of voice on.

You've seen him already. He didn't speak, heaven forbidd, but you saw him in episode 19.

I thought the episode was good, i thought ed was going to die right there and it almost made me cry, the funny part was when no 66 was saying how al didn't know where his blood mark and al replied that no didn't know where his blood mark was either and that part got me laughing
other things i liked about the episode
-How sad it was that Al was told that his memories and his life may be fake sad.gif
-the fight scene between the guardian and Ed
-Ed saying how he can't kill people cause that isn't his Job
-finding out the connection between 5th lab and prison

I could go on and on but i'll stop here and overall the episode was good and can't wait for next weeks episode smile.gif
Panzer Dragoon
Yeah, Barry the Chopper was pretty funny in the episode. It's too bad I'll have to kill him. If I was Al, I would have gone on a bloody rampage, stealing one of Barry's knifes and destroying him while saying,"I am human!!! My memories are real!!!"

There will also be another psycho making an appearance and a nude guy in the next episode!!! OMG!!! Oh yeah, here are some pics.
LoMXD
yay thanks panzer. Neat pictures.
the face for Berry gave me nightmares(really)
it really suits a crazy guy like him .

I love Barry in the books. I hope that they haven't changed his role from the book much.

This episode was decent. I thought that it was funny how Al had no problem with Barry, even while he was being overly nice/worried. It was like he was just having a casual conversation while he put a whoppin on Barry, lol, go Al!
Anyway, I am looking forward to the end of that fight.
lightningstaralchemistRME
ok...FUNimation does a great job (I think) of using what they have and making the best of it. Obviously, they can't use the exact Japanese translation because in English, the words and the mouth flaps just wouldn't work together. I think the voices were excellently cast (especially Ed's, but that's just me tongue.gif ). The episode was really funny because Jerry Jewell made Barry the Chopper just...really frickin' funny (and if you've seen Fruits Basket, you know how awesome he is). It was so sad how Barry made Al think that he was fake though! I would've cried!!! And seeing Ed nearly die was absolutely horrifying *sobs uncontrollably* but in the end, Scar (indirectly) saved him...which is a good thing. biggrin.gif I think the English dubs are done really well and that those of you who compare them to the Japanese original should just stop and look at them for what they are. They won't be exactly like the originals, that's a given, so I think that you should at least just give them some credit for trying and for sticking as close to the original as they can. Yeah...so now that I'm done bitching (lol) the episode was GREAT!!!! But I think "Mother" is my favorite...so sad *sniffle, sniffle*
sailorv
Yeah, I felt bad when Barry told Al he wasn't real...but I'm also wondering what it is that Ed hasn't told Al. Do you remember? A couple of times now Ed has said something that made me think that there may be some limitation to the spirit attachment that Ed has somehow supplemented for now. And it could be memories...It was most obvious in the episode where Winry's repairing them a couple of weeks ago, but I think there was also a reference last week.

This episode really worried me because of how badly Ed got injured. Seeing through his perspective, you could feel how close he was to not being able to recover enough to defeat the guardian brothers. Ikes!!

I was worried about Ed's injuries too. It looked like he was losing a lot of blood; that threw me for a loop.

Now, what really made me wonder was what Barry said about Al not being real. I was kind of thrown off for that; I don't think Ed would supply false memories into Al; he cares about him too much, ne? But then, Ed said he had to tell Al something a few weeks ago, as we all recall, and as mentioned in the quote ^. I think that Al's memories being erased may be beyond Ed's control.

The thing about that is, how can you know what exactly a person is like? What goes on in his head? What memories he holds the most important? If Barry really knows what he is talking about, then it is pretty likely that Al's memories probably aren't really how he would have remembered them; I am sure that Ed did try his best to bind the Al that he knew best. However, one must realize that you cannot understand fully what makes a person tick, so the Armor bound Al is probably a slightly more "Ed" version of Al, if you get what I'm saying.

unsure.gif I hope that makes sense lol
ymsg
Yeah, I have to agree with you there; that does make a lot of sense. I concur that Ed would restore the Al that was to the best of his ability, but as you said, you never know what makes a person tick. Episode 21 didn't shed much light on it either.
sailorv
It might just be my imagination, but in the episode (just a few back) where Winry's fixing Ed up and Al's memories seem to be fading or confused, Al seemed to be much more himself after Ed could put his automail back together with alchemy. It made me wonder if the memories are spread out all through the automail. Al was missing an arm (and more), but seemed better when he was back in one piece.

Then again, maybe Ed "recharged" Al as part of fixing him up...Hmmmmmm... mellow.gif
AlphonseRules
I didn't look at it like his memories were spread out through his armor. I looked at it like he could only remember the more important stuff(family and his house). The only thing that he couldn't remember was who that girl was. Granted they were good friends with her, but she's not as close to Al as his family and the Rockbells.

i don't think it was only that girl who Al couldn't remember. he told Ed later that he didn't recall ever having any friends besides Ed and Winry; it was all a blur and the people he did remember were faceless. just seeing that girl made him think of whether or not he could remember anyone else.
