I completely forget which chapter this was from, but I love the part where Winry and Ed were yelling at each other (yet again) and Al is off in the background looking all knowing and saying something like "Ah, the springtime of youth."

That’s harsh Chiyo… they are only trying to fit in. And in a way they are right. FMA is not a romance, I doubt they will ever really get together, but that doesn’t mean I believe they don’t like each other. I believe that they care for each other very much. But the possibility of them killing each other, over getting together… is very slim lol because they really care about each other. So just watch it when you talk about stuff like that, because it really isn’t true if you understand their relationship, even though it’s out of character for Ed, he would by her flowers and kiss her millions of times if it would save her life.

Er....better chance killing eachother then getting together? XD... I think that there's a waaay better chance them getting together then something like killing eachother to happen lol. It's true that FMA is not a romance anime, but if they could acknowledge that they both like eachother in a romantic way..not just like friends or brotherly/sisterly love...then I would be happy ^^
Off Topic: I've heard in lots of anime, people saying "suki" ...does that mean love or like? And how would you pronounce that (ski?). And another off topic...does it make a difference when pronouncing desu as "des" or "desu" ? I've heard both and it's confusing me on which would be proper to say. Thanks!
Morgri
Apr 13 2005, 07:15 PM
"Des" is "Desu", when speaking sometimes you drop the 'u' at the end. For example, "Boku wa Morgri Desu" is said "Boku was Morgri Des" outloud

On topic: Despite the fact that it is an action surrounded anime, there is romance thrown around. It happens in every anime. Naruto, Chrono Crusade, Last Exile, heck even Digimon had some romance in it (or an attempt anyway

). So I wouldn't toss out the idea.

The chance of them getting together is very slim I would say. But it is true what you people are saying about the romance around, that's true with Fma, you can tell that they like eachother. But that's as far as I think it would go... if anything the might admit it, but the scene wouldn't be very satisfying for us EdxWin fans... Fma is just not a romance... I doubt they would kiss in the movie... maybe in the manga it might happen. Yes let's say there are more possibilities with them in the manga, thats for sure

Well we can hope

That's what I agree with. Fma is not a romance, so there will never be some lovey dovey kissy scene, but there definetly will be a conclusion! Even if, like I said before... it's just something nice like her welcoming him home. However I don't think it will satisfy me! *Cries*
Personally I hope Fma movie has some romance, I don't always love a romance Anime, I mean it gets so tiring. But FMA could do with some love, specially on Edwards part. I mean we always see Al admiting he thinks someone is cute or something, but never Ed.
Could the movie be his chance? I hope so!

As far as the brother/sister issue goes, yes, Ed and Winry and Al did grow up like siblings, and love each other very much in that innocent way. However, particularly in the manga (though there were strong hints in the anime as well), Ed and Winry appear to be blossoming slowly beyond that already very dear connection.
An excellent example of this in the anime is the scene, just before Ed's final departure, when Winry braids his hair for him. This entire scene is a subtle show of their changing feelings. Ed is planning to leave; Winry feels the need to say something, but like most people on the verge of something deeper, she's having trouble saying it directly, so she grabs ahold of his hair. He's startled, asks what she's doing, and she tells him she'll braid his hair for him. Ed doesn't get it at first, and says, no, that's okay, he'll do it himself (probably wondering why she would bother). She repeats, this time with her head ducked in embarrassment , that she'll braid it for him--this time insistent and slightly emotional. Ed glances over his shoulder and gets a good look at her expression, and then blushes. And says, okay.
A brother and a sister don't get this worked up over a little favor like a hair braid. There is a subtext here that isn't hard to read. She's telling him as best she can that she cares; and when he catches on to what she's saying, he gets just as shy and flustered. Interpersonal connections are being reworked and rearranged here, and the direction in which they're going is obvious. (Oh, and before anyone says that chemistry can't happen between childhood friends who grew up slinging mud at each other, I have some very real life experience in falling hard for a boy I considered a big brother until we hit puberty.)
DarkWarrior
Apr 28 2005, 02:03 PM
Hey about the bro/sis thing, I don't know about Japan, but in most asian countries, we call people we know uncle, or aunt, or sister or brother, even if we're not related. It's out of respect.
I had a best friend when I was younger, and he was a boy, and I used to call him brother all the time, but I never saw him like a bro. Just a buddy.
But yeah I think when they meant bro/sis, I think it's just to show how much they care about each other... like family. Umm.. if i dont make sense, bite me i'm sleepy.

Hmmm... personally, I would like to say that Ed and Winry would get together at some point. However, the big problem with them getting together is the fact that FMA is a shonen manga and anime, and (oddly enough

) they aren't big on that...
However, I agree with Chiyo: the manga is absolutely
packed with hints. There's the most obvious one in Vol. 14, where he thinks Winry's cute (and then takes it back because she charges him for bringing her to Central

). Then there's the other little things like the time when the baby's born, and at Elisia's birthday.
It's like the RoyxRiza thing: hinted, but not really going to happen overtly. I suppose we can hope for the manga or the movie to give us some romance... *crosses fingers*
Well, if all else fails, there's always doujin and fanfic!
P.S. Big thanks to Jellybean (on page 33) for the Valentines' and White Day pictures! Utter cuteness (and Roy looked so sad/cute!)

Ok, something that I've been thinking about following on from what Tobu was on about, is why Ed doesn't have a braid in the movie. Not an Ed/Win fan? Don't carry on. *spoilers*
As Tobu said the hair braiding scene seems to show some form of affection outside of brother and sister. Because he leaves no words are exchanged. Winry may have even said something if it hadn't been for Scizka being in the room. At the end of the series, it is Winrys (rather upset) face they show when they say 'Ed has dissapeared'. Surely they would have shown Rose if it was her relationship with Ed that was more important (I am getting somewhere with this). When Al tells her he will bring brother back she blushes as Al leaves. Because shes upset, but also maybe because there is also the promise of Ed returning.
Right, to my initial point, the braid. Winry giving him that braid was probably the greatest, although subtle, affection that has ever passed between them. The braid is the words she couldn't quite say. Perhaps Ed knew this, somewhere in his mind. He does not accept Rose and her advances (please note that people, he moves away from her).
In the film, his hair is no longer in a braid. In my mind (this is me though) I see it as a preservation of that moment he shared with Winry. Rather then put another braid in he saves that last braid he had as the one she gave him. And for all those who are going to say 'he has no time' or something like that...he always found the time to braid his hair.

I totally agree with what Chiyo and Tobu said.
The argument that Ed and Winry couldn't possible like eachother because there wouldn't be any flame isn't valid at all. I mean he leaves her life for almost four three years, there are some major changes there. In reality there would be serious tension. I know there was serious tension for me when i hadn't sene someone for a year.
A boy completely changes in his teenage years. So techinically the realtionship is very possible.
It was vry observant what Chiyo said about the braid, and I agree. I love this pairing, that braiding scene was soo adorable and hint giving.

Well, honestly, it's quite possible (though it takes a ridiculous amount of practice) to ponytail your hair one-handed. I investigated it firsthand when I wrote my fic "Wooden". Braiding it one-handed, on the other hand, is well-nigh impossible.
From all the evidence given at the end of the series, I drew the clear conclusion that Ed's automail was gone. However, from the screenshots of the movie that I've seen, Bones may or may not have entirely disregarded all the clues they gave, as well as historical fact about prosthetics /and/ all given information about automail so far. This would frustrate me a lot.
My most basic reason for believing it to be gone? Ed woke up /whole/ when Al restored him. Flesh limbs on all four counts. Then he /sacrificed/ himself for Al, and the Gate took at least his arm, and possibly his leg as well. Why on earth would the Gate take his limbs in trade...and then give him back his automail, like some kind of cosmic consolation prize? It just doesn't make sense. The Gate takes its fee and gives what the sacrificer asked in return, but automail was surely the last thing on Ed's mind.
In any case, the idea of Ed giving up his braid in Winry's name is very sweet, but unlikely. I have long hair, and I know how quickly a braid can degenerate (I have even deliberately left in braids that people special to me have braided, several times, but none of them survived in passable appearance for more than a day or two). A few days passed between that episode and the end of the series, and Ed's braid is still very neat; he obviously rebraided it a few times after Winry did it, which somewhat stymies the idea.
And hey, why complain if his automail is missing on an Ed/Win thread? Kaput automail means Ed going through the surgery again, which means more opportunities for closeness to Winry... <3

Winry always bangs/throws wrench at Ed and Winry gets ticked when Ed breaks the auto-mail. So I think that they are just best friends.
NightMistress
May 3 2005, 03:36 PM
hitting him with a wrench and getting tickled because he's broken his automail could easily be interpreted as non platonic affection. If Ed really was a best friend of mine, I wouldn't be tickled everytime he broke his automail. I'd want to see him from time to time b/c he's my best friend, but that's just to hang out. Now if I like a guy (as in being attracted to him) and he has to keep coming to me for something that would require me to put my hands on him, I'd be tickled just like Winry.
