Don't know about other people, but because I'm a girl, I find it's more romantic having a guy/girl relationship than a guy/guy one..... guy/guy just doesn't seem to give me that sort of feeling when I watch it.

Whether the feelings are friendship or one-sided or double-sided, Ed doesn't really have the time for it. Just a reminder, I am an EdXWin shipper. I mean Ed's looking for the Philosopher's Stone, and a relationship (a long-distance one too) would just get in his way.

But we can never forget the episodes The Philopher's Stone with Barry the Chopper, well sorta with this episode. And that one line in "Be Thou for The People", you know the "Ahh, Winry, I wish you'd care about my real limbs instead of my fake ones."

My view of yaoi (guyxguy) is that (anime only!) has to be a big fight sceen or the most romantic deep sort of love.

Anywho, im seriously hoping for some EdxWin fluff (kissing, confessions, ect) to happen somewhere sometime. Sighs, Will I have to wait forever.

My view on yaoi. I used to be a non-yaoi shipper for the most part. It was usually because the anime I watched had no true yaoi tendenacies. Wherever I saw plot potential with a couple, I went with it. FMA started out the same and I really didn't understand any reason for the yaoi pairings. But then Hughes/Roy came along and kind of brought me out of that. With this pairing, it's not at all about it looking hott (and believe me, it certainly does). It pulls on my heartstrings because of the connection they have and how I find it believable that it could have translated into something more at one time. Other yaoi pairings I find look really hott in fanarts, but they just don't give me the same effect of genuinely loving it. The fanfics have to work too. I find it so rare that yaoi fanfics work. When I first decided to give Hughes/Roy a chance, the fic that I read worked. Then the fic I read after that one worked and so on and so on. The fanarts obviously work too . I pretty much like to go with whatever seems like it can work. Roy/Riza will always win with me though because that's how it goes in the show. Ed/Win I love a lot too for the same reason. I love seeing their feelings unravel bit by bit in a canon form. It's just more fulfilling than me imagining things and having to change the plot around in a major sense. Yes, the plot needs to be changed some for Hughes/Roy but you don't have to change all that much where I like to place this relationship which is something that helps the fanfics work as well as they do.

To people with anti-yaoi sentiments or anti-gay in general. It would probably be better if you just get used to it. It exists and will continue to do so. It has its own CONVENTION for goodness sakes. You just have to learn to tolerate it or ignore it, but ranting about how gross it is won't get you far. If you're that freaked out about it, avoid the general online anime communities because it always will pop up. No doubt about it.

Back around that time it was quite normal to get married pretty young like that. My Nana, God bless her soul (she passed away this May at 95), was married at 17 to my great Grandfather. She had 5 children too (outlived 3 of them and my great grandad). So all of that could have been the normal back then.

what is "that time"? winry seems to dress pretty modernly for the fma world to be "that time," and it is very doubtful that during "that time" people could come up with the automail.

This show is supposed to take place in the early 1900s. Yes, they do have some modern things about it (like the clothes), but this is still the time line of the show. You also can't forget that this show is STILL fantasy so some things won't match up (like automail existence).

FMA takes place in 1910-16 ish. This means nothing! All of their Stuff is 1920-40s stuff!
Cars: 1943 styled bodies and engines.
Uniforms: 1920-30 (roughly)
They have: phones, radio, radio-phone on train(heehee), trains, cars, boats (Prove me wrong before you tell me they dont!), buildings and drain sewers, electricity, pluming, sertifiyed sergrey doctors, sertifyed doctors, clean hospitals, police force, guns (nice ones too!), and womens rights has passed. (Maria, riza, Sheska and Sloth prove this one.)
They also have religous freedoms (I'll explane in a second).

All this states that it is in a time when advancements are had been made not long ago and slowly climbing towards a greater goal.
This to us is 1900-40ish.
I honestly can't find any clothing that can not be explaned, Winry's skirt is realy the only thing questionable.

Oh! the religous freedom thing is for the whole country of ...Amerists?...anyway, I relized this because Lior had a sun god, Ishbalans run around, and the city sinking into the water had a catholic church! I agree about everything being particularly modern... especially the cars and clothing (well, cars like those would've been prominent during the 40s - 50s I guess). Other notable things have been mentioned by eliss_music and being women's rights science. I can't say much about the freedom of choice of religion - was there ever a war/open prosecution of people with particular religious beliefs? (was that what happened in Lior?) Did the manga (or at least Arakawa-sensei) ever openly state what year the manga takes place in? The anime year is crystal clear, but still.... it just seem like Arakawa-sensei had the present era in contemplation when she started drawing FMA.

Ed can only use his automail for basic tasks and for a second arm to use alchemy. I personally think he sucks at fighting so his automail doesn't really matter there. Plus, there are others that are just as good/better than winry at automail so they don't really need her. Also, I don't see why ed couldn't just mold something to his arm/leg to enhance it more. All he does with his automail other than wear it out is make that stupid knife thing with his arm, and he can't even fight good with it...pointless...get a good weapon.

Basic tasks are pretty key I'd say to his survival. Without the basics, you've got nothing. His automail is an important puzzle piece to the whole picture. Without that we'd have no show. He couldn't do alchemy. He couldn't walk. He couldn't fight or do whatever he needed to do. Even if you don't think he fights well with it, he still wins since he's alive. And he couldn't be shielded from attacks like his automail offers. Ed seems to get by one way or another without whatever "good weapon" you're hoping to see. Goes to show that using your head is just as important. Furthermore, Ed seems to think Winry's work is the best (least by the manga standards). Think of how young she is and how good her stuff is already. What automail was better than Winry's might I ask? I don't think it was ever truly determined.

What about that guy in that one episode?...sorry about not being descriptive, but I don't really know how to say it...it was the episode where everybody was seeing whose automail was best and ed used alchemy to enhance his. That rundown shopkeeper guy was pretty good. Plus, I still think that all ed has to do is enhance it himself. He can bind al's soul to a suit of armor so I would think he could upgrade his own arm and leg. Speaking of which, I think he should make them both like crazified so if he was grappling (which seems like it happens in many fights) he could kick them or something...I don't get why they never do that. Looking at the other person really hard isn't gonna make them want to let go.

The automail sceen you are talking of has nothing to do with "greatest" or "best" but Winry needed to know that Ed was greatful for her work. This is common amoung those who are talented. Penniya wanted to prove her automial was best when it wasn't needed. Quality has nothing to do with style of automail, no two makers have the same design (duh). The reason Winry is praised for her work is beacause she's 15 or 16, a damned good automail engenier for any age, and is always learning new tricks of the trade so she can change up her designs till she finds the perfect one. Winry is very smart, not idiot or monkey can be an engenier, It takes skill, craft and pateince with people. Winry also understands human pain very well (she may not realize it but it's from Ed & Al's mom dieing and her parents dieing that she gets this) and she understands Ed very well. This is why she "bond" with him while fixing his automail. She can also threaten him with it if she wants. I.e.- Winry "Ed appologize." Ed"No, I don't wanna" W"Edward, appologize or I won't fix your arm!" Ed *blink* "ok, I'm sorry" *winry fixes arm* "Mess up again and I'll break it."
See, she could do that, but she doesn't, she cares too much<3.

I believe Ed gave up a part of his soul to bond Al's to the armor.
Notice he seems more distant then he should from everything, especialy people.

Ed can not Make great machines! Walls, solid. Fake Al's, solid, wepons, Solid. Automail, millions of parts! It's like trying to bring back a human, same princable! too many parts, not enough knowaledge, and he'd wind up busting his arm so then he couldn't fix it and Winry would kill him!
Ed honestly doesn't know "how" he got Al's soul to the armor but he knows how to keep it there when he fixes him.
