This discussion of Roy's civvies reminds me of a YouTube video that my mom showed me: Nickelback covering ZZTop's "Sharp Dressed Man"

While Roy isn't excessively flashy... *discreetly fans self* I do love me a guy who can wear a suit!

On a more serious note, I wholeheartedly agree that both Roy and Riza look very nice in regular clothing, and that their choices suit them very well.

Kale--Oh, no, not the Hawaiian shirt! *bursts out laughing* I'm sure Roy can rock a pink shirt, and I'm sure he can rock a Hawaiian shirt, but not a pink Hawaiian shirt! laugh.gif

As for Roy's civilian clothing...I give him five stars biggrin.gif The only thing better than a man in uniform is a man in a suit.

True!
I just can't imagine Roy in more casual clothes, like jeans or something. huh.gif Even the hawaiian shirt seems more probable than that.

Roy and Riza's civilian
angelofsarcasm89
People who only saw the first anime can't even use that as an excuse to have Riza as a cold skirt-hating hag, unless they just quit and never watched the last episode. We see her wearing skirts and taking care of Roy and being all cute and lovey and stuff!

Graah, it just annoys me. Yeah, I know that trying to keep everyone in-character and not all OOC is hard and takes awhile, but that's no excuse to just completely throw their personalities out the door and write them however you want. You'd might as well just change their names to Bob and Mary and stop calling it a fanfic.

Blatant OOC-ness is my berserk button.

Unfortunately Riza often falls victim to bad fiction writing. I don't read loads of fan fiction, but of what I have read, the majority portray her as a woman who doesn't socialise, pulls her gun out at anything, doesn't enjoy shopping, and is a cold, hard woman. That's not Riza at all!

Ahh, fan fiction... what would be face-palming about without it smile.gif

I love how sophisticated she looks with her skirt and jacket when she's grocery shopping. Somehow it's even cooler when she pulls out her guns biggrin.gif

I can't see him in jeans either, but it's probably too early for those.
Hawaiian shirt... I dunno, that's more like Havoc... or Hughes, or something.
He does look dashing in a suit tongue.gif But IMO he probably looks the best in the military uniform out of the characters of FMA.

Soo no one still cares for 'Drug Lord Roy' from the FMA Wii game? tongue.gif

I'm strangely fond of that ugly Hawaiian shirt they gave him...must be due to the shirt being pink. laugh.gif Though the sunglasses should've been black and not purple.

OMG! I was kinda numb for a week after seeing that! XD WTH was that??? lol I think it's brilliant for it's comical edge, but still... disturbing. Only a little less disturbing was Riza in that cheongsam of hers. I mean, I like cheongsams (and I even do HAVE one), but that was really... weird. Somehow it didn't fit her properly.

Me neither. XD And some people still insist in putting Roy in such casual clothes in fanfics. :s
jacksparrow589
(Referring to angelofsarcasm89's post) True, but like I said before, there are those who know only of anime1. It seems weird now, but it's possible.

On the other hand, there are those who know and blatantly ignore the characterizaion from the manga. Those people do push my buttons, too.

I'm not saying that maligning a character's... er... character is acceptable, but when you're working from a limited knowledge base, it happens, and I'd challenge you to name one category of fanfic where at least one person hasn't gotten it completely wrong simply because they lack the information.

Sorry if I sound whiny, but I am one of those fanfic writers who, due to knowing only the first anime for a while, had it wrong. I worked hard to better understand FMA and thus improve my writing, and I try to keep them as in-character as possible. At the same time, these are our stories coming from our imaginations. We try to fit the story to the character's personality, but we're not Arakawa, so we don't always succeed, and sometimes wind up bending the characters a little. For me, that's part of the magic of fanfic.

There are fanfic writers out there who know better and just don't care if they "do it right"; that's very true, and it hacks me off as much as anyone, but there are those of us out there who really do try hard.

Again, I'm trying not to offend anyone, so please let me know if I have. I'm just expressing my thoughts as a Royai fanfic writer after looking at these posts saying that a lot of people get it wrong. That may be true, but I'd like to put out the reminder that there are those of us out there who do get it right. I might not always be among them, but I've read fics by them, and damn, they're good! (Also, I'm not saying to get out there and read fanfic if you don't want to. I understand and respect that completely. Again, this is just my perspective.)
angelofsarcasm89
I should have clarified, it's one thing to write a character as OOC because you just don't know much about them at this point. Lord knows I've got a notebook full of some dead-end fic ideas from when I first got into the series that will never see the light of day and should be burned. I do forget sometimes that not everyone has seen all of the first anime or any of Brotherhood/manga.

But what completely irks me is what you said, people who have seen/read a lot of it and just don't care. Like this one fic I started reading, it referenced a lot of stuff from the current Promised Day arc, so the writer obviously has been keeping up with the story, but she still wrote Roy and Riza as the womanizing jerk and the skirt-hating harpy. She even had Riza go on this angry tirade about how she doesn't own anything girly and hasn't worn a dress since she was a little and threatened to shoot him. I was just like "GDFSGKDA I'M SORRY, ARE YOU SURE YOU'RE READING FMA?"
jacksparrow589
^Ah. I understand. Thank you. (And my bad for not getting that the first time.) And the writers who know but don't care drive me up the wall, too! They give the rest of us (however the fractions work out) a bad name!

Back to clothes: I didn't say this before, but I can see Roy in slightly more casual clothes. Nice, dark jeans, maybe, and a casual button-down. Not sweats, though, or even grungy jeans, no matter how "artfully" ripped. Maybe pajamas, but only for sleeping!
Kale Mustang
Aww, no love for a casually dressed Roy? That makes me a sad panda.

I ca easily see him wearing dark colored jeans, a plain t-shirt and a sweater (I usually dress like this) with some low-key sneakers (like Adidas Sambas). I'll wear my fair share of button-up shirts (I have them in long and short-sleeves) as well as short-sleeve polos.

My pajamas range from a t-shirt with actual pajama bottoms to t-shirt and boxers; also sweats for sleeping are <3. biggrin.gif
hand-made-city
Hahah I actually got used to Roy wearing the Hawaiian shirt in the Wii game.... the tiny little martini glass was the icing on the cake! So funny! XD

My favorite Roy outfit would be when he's just wearing a simple white buttoned shirt with the gun holster. Like in episode 15... (can't remember the chapter number right now) GOSH the gun holster!!! It's so weird looking on him because he doesn't use guns much, but it just looks good as an accessory somehow. lol!
StormGoddess
Riza in a cheongsam... I think she looks good on it even if she doesn't look Xingese/Chinese. Plus, it makes fans draw a good fan art. laugh.gif We all know they did that LOL.

I think Roy looks good in whatever he wears. Even in that White Day scan where he looks OOC. And I like his hair in episode 10.

it's like a roy's biography, post CoS, but with our POV as him. he got a cancer, somekind of that, and riza is beside her always to take care of him, blah blah blah.. and roy's condition got worse and worse and worse.. blah2. and they finally get married because riza always want to be beside him. and more things. roy's condition is constant/stagnan for a while,, until then he thinks, that after he died, who will riza live with, to comfort, to be comferted, to held her at nights.. and he realize , he wants a piece of him to remain in this world with riza. blah3, they have a child and roy named him Maes. roy wants to redeem his lost years with his son later when Maes grow up, so he writes down letters for Maes to be opened every year at his birthday until his 17th birthday.

more things to be add later. i'll post it later because I'm still at school. biggrin.gif tehee

asking!! about Grumman being Riza's 'grandfather', when he asked roy to marry his 'granddaughter'. I donno what does that mean. Grumman's riza's grandpa? wha??

Turdaewen
I can't picture Roy in clothes of the 21st century. For me, he'll always dress as a man from the 40's. Which is awesome... it suits him very nicely. Roy in jeans just seems... out of place, for me.

The same with Riza. I always tend to think of her as a very classic, 'chanel' kinda woman. The sort of woman who wears opera gloves to a black tie party... The clothes they appear in the manga are usually the way I picture them dressed all the time.

And the white shirt with the gun holster in chap 15 on Roy... God! *.* I thought I was the only one who noticed how good that looked... glad I'm not. But, I don't think it's weird for Roy to carry guns. He may be an alchemist, but he's still a military man and will always be.

About fanfics I wrote a oneshot sometime ago that I tried to make it as "non OOC" as possible, if anyone hasn't read it yet and is interested: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5805027/1/No_More_Games

About Grumman being Riza's grandfather. He's actually his grandfather in her mother side, according to Perfect Guidebook 2. It seems as if Riza is not aware he's her grandfather, and neither does Roy.
So, it seems as if Grumman is messing up with Roy when he asks that.
shanryelric
OH I just realize the gun holster in Chapter 15!! OwO roy looks awesome!

OH wow I'm in love that fanart. Beautiful! *_* *struck speechless*

And I'm looking forward to reading that fic you posted, shanryelric, thanks!

Trying to picture Roy in casual modern-ish clothes is hard, but he would look charming beyond words. If Arakawa releases an art book with that kinda art, millions of people would suffer constant nosebleeds whenever it popped into their minds. NOT that I'm opposed to such a design...
black~hayate
Yeah, the fanart was really awesome.
About clothes... I dunno. I imagined Riza having a red dress. Purple looks kinda too stylish. And red is just classical and beautiful.
But well, I guess purple is Riza's favorite color? Since her earrings are so... light purple. And she wears them all the time?

I like Roy more in the clothes he had in a calender. You know, a black suit and his hair back. I love it when his hair is put back.

I don't think so. That panel was weird, kind of diagonally tilted. And Roy's face was not to be seen. I think at least he knew.

And, if Riza's favorite is purple... well, than we have something in common! XD lol I like purple so much my whole desktop is purple (and my notebook,a bunch of clothes...)
But the earings are not purple. They're actually silver. They look purple because of the light, but they're in deed silver.

If he did, I would consider him to be a spineless, lying bastard, 'cause Riza probably doesn't know. and keeping something like that from her would be completely dishonest on his part. Riza has no family. Keeping her from knowing her own superior officer is a relative of hers would be, to say the least, to betray Riza's confidence.

Unless Riza herself would know it, too, and chose to keep a secret for the sake of avoiding gossips (which is possible, but not probable).

And I know people tend to want Grumman to be a sort of "Royai supporter" (and he may even be, eventually), but not in that scene. It seems a lot more as an easter egg and a joke by Arakawa, much like the "Stray Dog" bottles throughout FMA or the posters of "Missing Yoki", since we don't get to know that Grumman is talking of Riza unless you read the Guidebook.
He may even, in fact, wish the two of them got married, but that was not like an actual proposal on Grumman's part.

I know it may seem by that that I'm not really a Royai Shipper. But it's just that I don't like mixing Fandom and Cannon things, as much as I would like some things to actually become cannon. Moreover, I don't think Royai depends on this sort of scene to be confirmed as cannon: there're scenes that are way more important in that sense.

I dunno. We have to think about it. I haven't seen earrings wich have a silver drop or how should I call it? It could be pearls. But silver is drawn in a different way in anime. It's just... there aren't such silver earrings. I mean, who would put a round-ish piece of silver as the main part of an earring...?
Well, if this isn't a purple stone or whatever, then the color purple is not Riza's favorite ^^

I think Riza has purple earrings. They're purple in every color pages by Arakawa or the official artworks from the anime. And it looks really good on her. smile.gif
shanryelric
so the second guide book actually mentioned THAT? Owo'' cool! hmm.. but does the manga has another hints about Grumman being riza's 'grandpa'?
Tian Ai
Michiyo - OMG, never seen that pic! So that's where Turdaewen's icon is from ^^ Woww, what a sexy dress... and Roy... tongue.gif

Hagaren_4ever, it's the link that StormGoddess posted, right here biggrin.gif [link]http://img717.imageshack.us/img717/562/25066123451163211715089.jpg[/link]

And Turdaewen, I like how even being a Royai fan, you would prefer Fandom and Canon to remain separate. The genuineness of Canon is its beauty - if all this crazy fandom stuff came true (even if it's quite tempting), the essence of Royai would diminish and it wouldn't be so special.

OMG, first time I read fanfic in Bahasa Indonesia and it's a great fic. It's so touchy, especially at the end Roy and Riza ask each other, "Apakah kamu bahagia?" (What are you happy for?)

that's a very bitter and sweet fic. I think we can translate that to share with other Royai fans. I'm not so good in Bahasa indonesia, but I still can read since it's close to Bahasa Malaysia.
shanryelric
@spectator: WOW. so you're.. malaysian? OwO
yes!! that one is so touchy, and also this one, in the end.

they are your happiness, whose you won't exchange with anything.

with that last glance the angel gave to you, you fell asleep to your peacest sleep.

you were dreaming about a patriotic death. but this, you own way to release your last breath, is better than all your sweet dreams about death.

Oh no, you're well within your right to say that, I hope what I said about fanfics didn't come across as harsh. I was mostly referring to the fics that seem to show no regard for character personality at all... it's definitely not as bad as it used to be, maybe I'm outdated; the last time I read fics regularly was maybe 2 years ago. Since then I've read them occasionally, only really from recommendations, or people who post on here! smile.gif I'm really quite thankful that there are people like you who do get it right! I do like a good fic (I just wish I had the time to read more regularly).

My favorite Roy outfit would be when he's just wearing a simple white buttoned shirt with the gun holster. Like in episode 15... (can't remember the chapter number right now) GOSH the gun holster!!! It's so weird looking on him because he doesn't use guns much, but it just looks good as an accessory somehow. lol!

I forgot about that!!! I think this one is my favourite actually, you don't seem with a gun that often so it's a bit different. Not that I base my favourites on which weapons they may be handling at the time... huh.gif but yeah, it does look good as an accessory.

FailToImpress--I'd like to think the quality of fanfic has gotten better over the past 2 years, but I don't have enough time to read, either... T.T Maybe I've just gotten better at figuring what's good and what's not just from the summary, so I just tune out the crazy ones. I don't think you were being harsh, either. It's true: a lot of people know better and don't care, and it sucks, but that's part of what makes me appreciate the good fics so much more. smile.gif I was just trying to cut the distinctions between "Royai: You're doing it right" and the two subsets of "Royai: you're doing it wrong": 1) Those who don't know and 2) those who know but don't care. If anything, I was being a whiner.

shanryelric--Your translation already made me go "wow" because, even if the words aren't as flashy as some, the images are very vivid. Thank you for sharing this!

spectator--Hmmm... This "what are you happy for?" moment sounds intriguing. Even if I could just get a really detailed summary, I'd like to know more.

StormGoddess--Thank you for sharing that fanart! It's beautiful!

Michiyo---I never get tired of that picture! It's wonderful. *sighs* Oh, the guys in their suits... And Riza's gorgeous, too!

Turdaewen--I don't think I'd read your fic until now, but I can safely say that I like it very, very much! I think you did a great job! *two thumbs up*

Yes... that calender... *.* BTW, does someone has that image in good resolution?? I'm crazy after it for the longest time. XD I wanted to make a wallpaper out of it.

I have this:

I think Riza has purple earrings. They're purple in every color pages by Arakawa or the official artworks from the anime. And it looks really good on her. smile.gif

Thanks, Michiyo!! XD

The color of this scan looked a little bad, so I corrected it in photoshop, if anyone is interested XD

I'll try later to recover it and take the writting and everything XD

I didn't know we had so many Malaysian people in the Royai community! Cool!!
I was so excited to read it... and I clicked it and was completely baffled biggrin.gif
Great job on the translation, shanryelric!

And thanks for the recolor, Turdaewen, looks much more vivid and eye-pleasing smile.gif

Just 2 more days until the next ep ohmy.gif
We'll get a bit more footage of Riza thanking Scar... and then it moves on to Ed, Hohenheim, and Father right?

Sorry I haven't been updating my gaiden-thing lately, I've been quite busy with schoolwork. >.O

These are the first few paragraphs. I'm going to bed.

Since you were small, you are convinced that dying for your country matched you the most. You had imagined how educational history books in the future would portrait you as one of the most influential person in the world. You had waited the advent of the promise day with chin held high, accomplishing all military missions gallantly, although that fearlessness cost much of your humanity.
But you still thrived, and yielded, thrived, and yielded. In your heart, you asked, when and where would death visit.
Throughout your life, not even once you thought that death would claim you in simple existence; a kind of mysterious disease that had yet found its cure, a cancer.
When the doctor told you the news sympathetically, you only grunted disbelievingly. You were certain, that it was a misdiagnosis. You went home with heavy footsteps, under that heavy pour of rain in the evening, sneering within. In your mind, even losing to car accident was more graceful than ceasing to breathe on the bed, accompanied by bottles of pain killing pills.
You found a drop of red droplet on the handkerchief, after you coughed acutely for months, your abdominal muscles twitched, as if shadows of death waving in. you tried not to care, because you believe, you are not one that losing life easily during war.
Thus, you would not die before you discovering the destiny between you and her.
At the end, one must bring you to the nearby emergency unit, when finding you collapse in front of your apartment.
How scaring the illness overtook you in such short time. In the blink of eye, a part of your body system failed. You instantly became some listless flesh and bones on the sick bed. All kinds of lines, that flow supporting fluid, emerged from several parts of your body. You hate the helpless circumstance like that.
Above all, you hated how nervousness and sorrow flooding her eyes when she visited you at the sick house, also the way she turned her face when she watched you groaning. For you, her attitude was more hurting than your twitching nerves that were close to tear all at once.

enjoy. will continue tomorrow... after i wake up.

Thank you for the translation, spectator!

By the way, slightly OT but I stumbled across Koutetsu Sangokushi, an anime version of the Three Kingdoms Romance (Dynasty Warriors anyone?) and Shinichiro Miki, Roy's seiyuu, also voices one of the characters. tongue.gif
I just realized how much I love his voice. biggrin.gif

Thanks to everyone who posted/translated/etc, its all muchly appreciated smile.gif

@Tian Ai, you're not alone; the only reason I've carried on watching Hakouki is because Roy's seiyu is one of the main characters, and he always sounds super cool o3o (and the gaiden is comming along brilliantly, but that goes without saying)
shanryelric
@Tian Ai: thanks!! I'm not really good at making fics in english >_> so.. yeah -,-. wait, so you're malaysian? Owo

And to continue…

You tried to smile, saying that you were fine, it was just flu. Yet, only a fool would believe with your console, because on the next second, you almost cried out in pain when that disease began to devour your lungs. She saw it all, and your pain had crushed her hear. Even though she hid it under her collected and almost perfect mask, her eyes, her canvas of soul, had betrayed her.
Under the effect of morphine, you watch the drizzles of tear rolling down her cheeks. One thing registered in your mind before enjoying that temporary discontinuation was the warmth of that woman’s grip. You swore to apologize to her, once you woke up later.
Apologize for making her cried.
That oath was delayed.
The moment you opened your eyes, you found her fast asleep with her head resting at the side of your bed. Your hand and hers were still attached, like the moment before morphine overtook your consciousness. That space would turn be completely pitch black, if none of the lamps on the table beside you was alighted. Under the obscurity, you used the time to watch her face by sweeping away her blond bang that covered part of her face.
Ah! How you wished you could destroy that frown that embedded so deep in her brows.
Then, that feeling came back. The feel of throwing yourself far into the deep sea once again, since the day you found the significance of it. The feel that closing to kill you silently. The feel of not care whole heartedly, although the truth made you happy and worrying till half dead. Strangely, the more you rejected, the greater its effect.
You condemned that creator of felt because back it came in situation that obeyed your very flawed analysis, like now. You cried, out of wish to feel – sorrow.
It came and gone, how routine.

Tian Ai - Wonderful work, glad to see you continuing even if you should be doing homework/research. I do have to admit, the plot bunnies always seem to multiply during schoolwork time.

Interesting, my interpretation is slightly different. Excuse my paraphrasing of your sentences below, they're just too beautiful not to use wink.gif

Then, that 'feeling' came back. That feeling that you really wanted to throw far into the deep sea since the day you found the significance of it. That feeling that was killing you silently. That feeling that you ignored with all your strength, although it actually made you half happy and half worried. Strangely, the more you rejected it, the greater its effect.
You cursed the creator of the feeling for bringing it back at this moment that, in your judgement, is so inappropriate. You felt like crying. Sorrow.
She came and went, so routine.

Someone is trying to hide his feelings here tongue.gif By the way, the last sentence refers to Riza.

Next bit:
It could be counted, your most absorbing activities in the ward were to wait for her arrival, other than staring at the ceiling, sleeping under the effect of the drugs, and counting the time passing by.
You didn't talk much during the visiting hours. More accurately, almost nothing passed from your mouth, or from hers. She would come, utter a greeting-which you would reply with a full smile, check that your infusion is fine, put a supply of fruits and other healthy foods in the fridge, and then peel an apple for you in silence.
She never looked at you.
You nearly screamed in frustration.
Occasionally you invited her to talk, asking about the state of headquarters and other military personnel. Her answers were no more than a short sentence. Longer, if neccessary. But not long speeches that had to be said while focusing her view on the listener.
You reached your limit.
"Look at me," you ordered. She did not respond. "Look at me, Riza."
She gasped, hearing you call her name. Her first name. Not her last. Nor the formal honorifics you should still use. Just plain. But you didn't hear her answer.
"'For God's sake, Riza, what is it?" You were flustered. Very flustered. "Don't act like I'm not here." As if that wasn't enough, you added, "You can act so in a few more months. For now, I'm still here, I'm still alive. I'm in front of you. So don't treat me as if I'm dead. Look at me. "
She paused in her activities, and looked at you immediately. Her gaze swinged from your left eye covered with a black patch to your whole face. You almost couldn't believe how any human could show such a blank expression, especially because of your words. "I realize you are completely in front of me, sir."
You wanted to ask, so why then does it seem that looking at you is such a painful task. You're not poison.

Such a sad part T.T

On a sidenote, happy belated birthday Turdaewen!
Kaori Ayanami
@whippersnapper & spectator: Wow. It's so poignant! I haven't read such a good (piece of) fanfic in some time.
Now I want it all. tongue.gif

I remember there were a pair of fics in Spanish which I liked a lot... Such a bad moment to remember it, I don't have the time nor the mind free enough to translate it. And I'm not a good Spanish-English translator, either. Hope I remember their names later. XD

Feliz cumpleaños, Turdaewen. (Spanish may not be Portuguese, but it's close, so I thought it would be nicer in a language that resembles yours smile.gif).
shanryelric
amazing, whippersnapper: AMAZING translation. exactly what the fic said. biggrin.gif man I'm glad that I asked you and Spectator to translate these. thanks a lot!
spectator
Thanks a lot for helping me out whippersnapper. I was so confused with those words, especially when the author use 'ia' instead of 'dia'. shanryelric, is it how Bahasa Indonesia use the word for 'it' and 'he/she'?

I will continue after i watch the latest FMA:B episode tongue.gif

But you were afraid. You were afraid because deep inside your heart, you already knew her answer. Her excuse was the same as why you had no courage to break the wall. You doubted if both of you could go further. You were afraid to hurt her more. Enough was enough.
“We…” you listened to yourself talking, even before your mind allowed doing so. “I…” how to do this? “You should not have done this, you know? Visiting me, taking care of me. There is not a single obligation for you to do all of these. If it is torturing you…” Stop! Stop! “just stop it.”
She looked as though as receiving a hard blow. Her mouth was slightly open and she finished everything as if in a rational defense. However, there was no more rationale, other than due to ‘feeling’. But certainly, she would not have told you of that. To her, it was a taboo, strictly prohibited taboo. And didn’t you too think the same?
Both of you fell into fear that was not logical; paranoid.
But at the end, that woman only gave her answer, shaking her head side to side, not paying attention to what you had said before.
Then she came tugging at your hand when the sudden pain enveloped you, and that blond and hazel eyed figure was the last being imprinted on your memory before you went back to sleep, under drug effect. That figure, your tiny heart called out, was the one you wished to spend the time with for the rest of your life, before death welcomed you.
Both of you had lost connect to the world outside. Who knew how many days had fled since you were stuck to that medical shelter. Tens of times you were trembling in pain. And guarding your soberness, whenever that fiend was torturing you, was her hug.
Once in a while, in your unstable and blurry conscious state of mind, you could see her crying. You wanted to plea to her not to shed tears for you, but you weren't quick enough to do that. It was such a shame, once you were awake, you would find her in her usual expression; firm, strong, and… distant.
