... Urm.. I've a question, what's doujinshi?

and, who thinks Roy and Riza looked much better in first season than the Brotherhood anime?

@Ryan Hawkeye - Doujinshi = independently-produced manga, often fanworks for a published series. They're mainly produced in Japan; US and other copyright laws are a lot stricter in that regard.

I don't know, I kind of like the Brotherhood design.
Kale Mustang
First of all, thanks everyone! wink.gif And to Tombow, you're welcome!

Second of all, regarding the doujin...there are two pictures that not quite appropriate for the board, but I can try to scan a few of the safer pics should anyone want me too.

Third, regarding the artwork between Anime1 and Brotherhood, I completely prefer the artwork of Brotherhood over Anime1.

Finally, just took a listen to the Drama CD that came with the Brotherhood Vol. 3 DVD/BD, and from what I heard, it's the Elric Family Omake rather than Roy's Holiday.

That would be appreciated, Kale.

Me. The art in FMA1 was far more consitent, and though it didnt resemble Arakawa's as much as FMA2 does, I think the overal style just looked better.

Also, I know this lacks relevance but, Michiko Neya did Riza's voice in FMA1. And. I. Miss. That.

Me too. Roy is more handsome in the first anime than in the second one. As for the manga, I don't know... He looks manlier that in both animes (in Brotherhood he is almost childish IMHO), but sometimes he is plain ugly... or ugly drawn, I don't know. (Don't shoot me! ^^U)

Riza looked best in the manga, and quite accurate through her character (the best one) and age changes. She looked good in the first anime, though animation flaws made that problematic sometimes. The worst is Brotherhood's look, not only because of the design, but also the inconsistence of it... That doesn't mean it's bad looking as such all the time. XD
Miverel
Oh Kale! I've just seen your new arrival! I envy you so much! ;___; But if you could scan some pages for us I'd die from happiness! smile.gif

And Ryan Hawkeye welcome on board!
Ryan Hawkeye
thanks for the welcoming!!

For me, I liked they both from the first season anime. Roy looked so handsome! Riza was quite beautiful too.

Brotherhood's drawings sometimes turned plain ugly for both of them. There are parts when Roy looks like distorted drawings!

How about their voices? First season or Brotherhood? (For the original japanese seiyuu)

I loved the original seiyuus than the present ones. XD

Wow... so many (Okay, like, 3, but that's a lot here!) new people I haven't said hello to! Where are my manners? *waves* Hi, new people! Great to have you here!

Ryan Hawkeye--For style, I'd say the manga does it best for both (taking the cheap way out, I know). To me, Roy's animation is okay in both. As to Riza, I agree with what's been said a few times: anime1 was MUCH more consistent, but it looks less like her manga form, so really, I don't have much of an opinion either way. Now, voices... I think I'm'a take the cheap way out on this one, too. Each one has good qualities. For instance, I actually preferred the deepness of Riza's anime1 voice, but think the VA for anime2 is doing her justice in terms of emotional range. With Roy, I guess I slightly prefer anime2, but really, unless the voices are beyond weird, I generally approve.

Kale--More pics? Bring 'em! If I can't have 'em in my own hands, even if I'm still insanely jealous, pics are the next best thing! (Then again, if I don't have to pay money to see them, so much the better! Never thought of it that way before...)
hand-made-city
Hi Ryan Hawkeye! To answer your question, I think I like Roy's design more in Brotherhood, but preferred Riza's look in anime 1... overall I like the manga's artwork most, but that's not an option in your question! Riza just got the short end of the stick in Brotherhood... even though she plays a much larger part in the series now, Bones just doesn't want to acknowledge her sometimes! Or clean up her character design. x_x

And while I'm at it, I'm starting to really like the new voices for the characters too. I'm already in love with Roy's new voice, and I can see why one of my friends is a huge Miki Shinichiro fan... For Riza's voice, I like both actresses. They're different, but so far I don't see one as being better than the other. Michiko Neya as Riza was the only role I've heard her in, while I've heard Fumiko Orikasa as Chise in Saikano (or Saishuu Heiki Kanojo) which was a completely different role! o_o
kuro-unagi
Thx for the welcome Jacksparrow589 ! ^^

And Ryan Hawkeye
Well I liked Roy more in brotherhood, because... um.. well...( ' _ ')....he looked young.....?
and I liked Riza in brotherhood as well, although sometimes she looked odd~ ^^

also Kale : weee... so you're going to share some? ' w ' = w = thank you..!! > w <

Hello, new people, it's good to see you here, I hope you feel welcome.
An thanks, Kale Mustang, the pictures are brilliant c:

@Ryan Hawkeye
To be honest, I didn't particularly love the anime1 art style, even if it is more consistant than Brotherhood, I prefer the designs of Brotherhood, though the manga tops it all, in my opinion. But then again, there have been some really funky scenarios with Brotherhood that have just been... -facepalm- :/

I didn't manage to hold out very long, I went on the 103 board and found the quick scanning+translation. Meh, I'm a little disapointed with lack of much Royainess and overall lack of pages D:
hand-made-city
Ohhh sorry kuro-unagi, I didn't welcome you too! I didn't realize how many new members showed up! So welcome all new members! biggrin.gif

I agree DoxyWings, there was only one panel of Riza that we've seen (I have a feeling there's a few pages missing, but they probably have very little to do with Riza anyway), and then just a few moments with Roy... so it looks like the manga chapters are moving on from them.. pity, since I was enjoying the Royai-ness chapter after chapter! But we can't be spoiled for too long, since they aren't the only characters! XD
Kale Mustang
Here're a few pics from Chocolate Queen's doujinshi, "Stoic Egoist". Not really scans, but some pics I took last night. And yes, I left out the two inappropriate pics.

rainbowcatgirl
@ kuro-unagi Hi ! I like your icon ! Do you happen to know what the Royai kanji says? It looks cute! I love the gender role-play and Roy's gloves <3 I wonder if Arakawa drew it? Thanks so much !
The_Twilight_Trinity
Thanks for posting those pages, Kale! They're lovely.

Gah. I've been really horrible with keeping track of the new members too. Welcome Ryan Hawkeye, kuro-unagi, and any newcomers I may have missed! The more Royai fans there are, the better! I apologize for my lateness.
Ryan Hawkeye
I guess, I'm the only one who loved everything about Roy and Riza from the first anime... happy.gif

Do you translation for that doujinshi?

and, another question!

Who's a Royai Fanfic writer?
Can I read your work?

I'm addicted to Royai fics... laugh.gif
rinoaebastel
Um...sigh i always feel like a low "drawing" with chocolate queen, but ...I love so much her artwork xD
so thanks for sharing biggrin.gif

and welcome @Ryan Hawkeye Im an addict too of read royai fics, and I always feel the need of draw them or writte a little lol.
hand-made-city
I write Royai fanfics! Not very often, and they're usually short... but like rinoaebastel, I'm usually drawing them! The links are in my sig, anyway.. People have recommended some good stories in this thread too, so maybe you could find those!

I didn't love everything about Roy and Riza in the first anime, but it's what first got me into Royai in the first place, so I guess there was some potential there! But sometimes I start thinking about this, and I'm wondering what other people think, so read on:

I was thinking that if you switched Roy from anime1 with Roy from the manga, or Riza... I feel that they wouldn't be as compatible. I could imagine that their anime1 counterparts might not understand things like the code that manga-Roy and Riza use... and Riza herself is a very different character in the manga. How do you think she'd interact with anime1-Roy? That would be so confusing for them but I'd be interested in seeing what happened. biggrin.gif I've come up with so many strange scenarios in my head already...

Kale--Thank you for sharing what you could of the doujinshi! It's so pretty...

Ryan Hawkeye--I think at least 75% of my fanfics are Royai. I'm, well, jacksparrow589 over on fanfiction.net. (My originality when it comes to usernames is crap.)
Ryan Hawkeye
What I meant wasn't the character. For me, their looks and voices were superb in first anime. Roy was so handsome and his voice was arrogant enough to fit his character. XD. For Brotherhood, I only like its plot.

@hand-made-city, I read few of your Royai fics. My favourite is Voiceless. That one was so sad!

@jacksparrow589, Seeing red! I loved that one!

and I did reviewed your fics XD

@rinoaebastel: somehow, I've to agree with you. Roy being an emopirate, laugh.gif

Anyone watched the OAV chibi party? It was hilarious. The Royai part was good one too.
Aribelle
Welcome to all the new people ^^

I have a couple Royai fanfictions. I haven't updated in a while though ^^; there is a link in my sig.

ZOMG doujinshi...it's so pretty O.O thanks for showing us the pictures Kale biggrin.gif

I personally liked the art in anime one better...but I can't really talk because I'm SO behind on Brotherhood and the last episode I saw had really awkward art :/

Roy looked more mischievous to me in anime 1 lol...like a little kid plotting something tongue.gif
kuro-unagi
whoa, so many welcoming ^^... thanks everybody for the welcome!

@Ryan Hawkeye: I like the art for both the animes. But I feel like the first one was more consistent in the character desgins. But you just know that Brotherhood is going to have more Royai moments, which makes me happy.

Thank you for sharing more doujinshi pictures Kale. If doujinishis and doujins are fanart, then how can the artists sell them without being sued by Arakawa or Shounen Gangan? Isn't there copyright laws?

A Pierrot's Aria
I like the brotherhood art much better than anime one; I love Roy's eyes the most. : )

Although, I do notice that it looks weird in some scenes and episodes, but some people tend not to realise that sometimes the art and characters looked weird in anime one, as well. In fact, pretty much all anime have episodes or scenes where the art looks really weird.
Thalogens
All my fanfic is Royai, except for one small story, which isn't really a story. Umm, but they're a little lame, and no one ever seems to review. :'c But I have a post chp. 102 story I sort of like... link in my siggie.

The doujins look very very pretty, thanks again, Kale, it's very appreciated :3
@FMAObsessed, I'm not really sure, but my wild guess is that doujins/doujinshis are like licenced fanart, like when Arakawa has other mangakas or her assistants draw in the omakes. A few years ago or something ( I have bad time recognition, it could have been a few months ago) JK Rowling stopped someone from publishing a HP encyclopdia, I'm guessing Arakawa allowed Chocolate Queen. Or something, I'll have to research that a bit more, I'm just guessing...
Read below post c:
Katya Martin
Doujinshi aren't licensed to a series; derivative doujinshi are actually illegal. Mangaka just don't bother going after the creators. They could sue, they just don't; after all, doujinshi spread knowledge of a series, and help the market.

A note: doujinshi aren't just fan-comics; independently-published manga in general are doujinshi.

More: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doujinshi
hand-made-city
Ohh thanks for explaining, Katya Martin. I myself didn't really know the workings of doujinshi either. I've even heard of the creators themselves making doujinshi for their own series (Kajishima is one that I've come across..)

I'm glad that there are so many Royai doujins out there and that they're allowed to spread knowledge of FMA. And I'm also glad manga-ka have no desire to sue! ^^;
rinoaebastel
So...for example if Iwant to sell a doujhin....I could? or is still illegal? or i just can draw it?
Katya Martin
It's always illegal; whether it's actually enforced or not depends on where you are. Making and selling them works in Japan. Publishers in other countries are not as lenient. I'm not sure how making/selling a doujinshi of a Japanese work outside of Japan would work out. I'd look at how strict your copyright laws were first (I don't know if manga publishers outside of Japan have any power to go after doujin or not.)

Technically, according to most copyright laws, it's illegal to produce derivative works (fanart, fanfiction, doujinshi, and such all fall under this) but actual results will vary based on what you do with it. Making things is generally all right, because it's too troublesome for anyone to go after them; it's when you get to distribution and selling it turns into serious business.

Back to the thread topic... Is that Black Hayate on the first page of 103? biggrin.gif

I thought he might be with Breda and co. If he's in guard dog mode, that might explain why he's not freaking out at the weirdness emanating from under the city. Hawkeye trained him well.

@Katya Martin: Thank you for explaining how doujinishi's are allowed to be published. It is basically fan promotion for the series. smile.gif and thank you DoxyWings for sharing your theory on it too.

I did see a certain dog at the beginning of chapter 103. But was it me, or was he looking directly at the solar eclipse? Which is not good for the eyes. And we don't need anymore eye problems.

Katya Martin
He appeared to be looking more forward than up. is then shot for some sort of "guide dog" comment

On a silly tangent, I want a Black Hayate. So much cute and awesome.

And even though I didn't participate in the doujin Q&A, I benefitted from the discussion as well. So thanks guys.

Anyways I was pretty certain of it being Black Hayate. And it made me question whether or not dogs are visually effected when looking at solar eclipses.

Actually, I was walking around the neighborhood one time and I saw this couple with a dog that made me go and say "What kinda dog is that?" And then they said "Shiba Inu" And I'm like >:P "Yah, Black Hayate." It even had a red collar. Haha. But I love my own mutt

Yep, saw that in the promos with amestris_star. We were both stoked to see it (she spazzing and me laughing at Roy's reaction). tongue.gif

And to Ryan Hawkeye, you should probably check the spoiler threads for the latest chapters in the Manga section of the board - there're usually links to the Raws/Scans there. But right now, mangastream has ch. 103 up. Onemanga is also another place to check for scans, as well as Mangahelpers.

Oh and you're welcome everyone and glad you all enjoyed the pics of the doujin. Managed to be able to order the books that Chocolate Queen put out during 2009 (with help), but have to wait and see if that person can get me the books. Keeping my fingers crossed. wink.gif

Well, yeah; dog's eyes work pretty similarly to ours, and extreme light is just as damaging. I don't think he's looking at it though.

Personally I'm in "can't wait for 104" mode right now, at least until I start classes tomorrow and become too busy to worry about it much (and then the chapter will be out before I know it.)

I'm sort of banking on that too. Arakawa is so good at making the wait painful if you don't have anything really to distract you from it.

Code scene next week! That should be good, though I was sort of hoping for it this week.... Still, I can't wait! I'm slightly disappointed that Roy and Riza (and Hayate!) only made the smallest appearance (in that huge crowd of people) in the new OP, though I liked it over all. I totally loved that Riza's tattoo was showcased in the ending, despite that they have yet to explain the scars in Brotherhood. And Roy in the rain..... Yay.
amestris_star
^That's because it's that part of the manga where Roy and Riza are barely visible, since after this we barely see them at all for approximately 10 chapters from then onwards.

And... I love both the OP and the ED sequences myself.

Ahaha! Yeah, you're right. Probably should have seen it coming for that reason. At the same time, it's weird not seeing them in the opening. Correct me if I'm wrong, haven't they made an appearance in each one up until now? I don't really remember the openings from the first series though, so I very well could be wrong about this.... *stops whining*

And don't get me wrong, I really do like the new opening! It's my second favorite after Again. And this ending sequence is probably my new favorite.
amestris_star
Again - there's the part where Riza is 'singing' and then both she and Roy can be seen.
Hologram - all the Roy-tachi are there, plus we have a Roy vs Lust scene.
Golden Time Lover - mainly Ishval-related stuff.
Period - Barely visible, just in the Elric army shot biggrin.gif
rinoaebastel
I think i like more the ending and not the opening xD
Turdaewen
I like the fact they gave a little 'attention' to her tatoo in the ending (could this be a good omen of them finally showing the "burn my back" scene???)

^I hope so, too! I mean, they hinted at it enough with the last opening!

I still find it ridiculous that they would (possibly) put the 'burn my back' scene anywhere else than where it should have been. They could have just gotten it over with in just a minute in the original Ishval episode and not have to worry about it anymore!

But I too was happy to see the tattoo make another appearance in the ending! I love it. To me, that's what heavily separates this Riza from anime1 Riza. It's what opened her up to having an actual backstory, after all! And because of that backstory, she quickly became my favorite character along with Roy!

I agree, hand-made-city, I definitely think that Riza's backstory is one of her main defining features. I really hope they find a place to insert the "burn my back" scene someplace, because it's important and I'm also dying to see it animated, but I agree that they should have just put it in the original Ishbal episode. Maybe they're saving it to use as a filler episode, along with some of the other Ishbal stuff they skipped? Gosh I hope not...ugh, come ON bones! Please find a decent place to put it in!

And maybe it will be in this next season. I think they're continuing to hint at it in an effort to calm the fandom and assure us that we will get our royai fanservice.
