What exactly is "canon"?
"Canon" in fandom, like in FMA fandome, means that that particular fact is officially recognized, either by the virtue of being in the actual FMA manga/anime series itself, or in Gaiden or any other officially recognized/sanctioned/licensed FMA publications such as various official FMA Guidebooks, or recognized by the author, director, etc, on their interviews and such.
In other words, if we can trace the given info to any of these sources, then we recognize that info to be officially recognized "fact" in the FMA storyline. Otherwise, we should treat the rest as unrecognized rumors until proven true, or "fanon," some stuff made up by fans.
Additionally, personally speaking, IMO, there is, and should be, a big distinction between some FMA fact being canon
or it being some made up fanon
. Although, I see time again and again that some fans are rather lax about the distinction, and I see some fans sometimes mistakingly believing some fanon info as a canon fact, or keep spreading unconfirmed info as if that is a canon fact, either intentionally, or unintentionally. I happen to be rather a stickler when it comes to not spreading unconfirmed fanon as if it's a canon fact. I don't mind whatever other fans imagine/fantasize/ or otherwise coming up with some interesting variations on the FMA storyline and facts, and I often actually enjoy reading those fan-made variations in fanfics, etc., as long as they are properly labeled as a fanon, but when it gets started passing around as a canon fact on our board, you will probably see me stepping in and intervening the spreading of such on our board. ^^
....And, going back to the pics in this Wii FMA game being canon... yes, this game has been officially sanctioned, and the story in this game is billed as a canon part of FMA story that was taken place before Ed and Al headed North. However
... we are also seeing strange/crackpot cap pics from this game, of Roy being Darth Vaderish
character with the Lightsaber, etc., so... I would love to find out the full game configuration, and learn just which of these pics are part of actual storyline, and which part belongs in their "fiction/fantasy" portion of the game.
...Having said that, yes, I agree that that pic looks positively Royai, and it's a very nice pic to start out the New Year for Royai fans.
So, yeah.. Happy Year 2010 to you all. Hope you are all having a happy new year! ^^
