It is definitely unfair, but at the same I kind of respect Arakawa more for having the guts to take a darker turn like that (no pun intended lol). I'm not particularly thrilled about what happened to Roy but I'm willing to live with it for the sake of being shaken up a little. When the mangaka is willing to do something drastic like that it just adds more suspense and uncertainty because you can't take anything for granted, and I far prefer it that way.

Also, while I'm glad she's not dead, I feel like things would be unbalanced if Riza lived and Roy got his sight back. The situation they are in is so severe...in my mind it's unrealistic for there not to be losses.

I'm just a pessimistic person these days lol. Must be all this negative energy from finals DX

I don't think you're being pessimist, though, so much as you're being a realist. You're only being pessimistic if you think that Roy can't make it to the top now. He can; he'll just have to work that much harder. And I don't doubt that he will. He didn't give up when Maes died, he didn't give up on Havoc, and he's obigated to both Riza and Ed to make it to the top. Come on--do you really think Riza's gonna say, "Okay, screw this. You're blind, so you'll never make it"? I can see Ed being a bit more sympathetic, but he didn't give up after he lost an arm and a leg, and Al--now there's the prime example for Roy to follow. My point is, he'll do what he can, as he always has, and we as readers just have to sit back and let the chips fall where they will.

I agreed with jacksparrow, Roy will never give up, and if he tries to, we all know that Riza and everyone will put him back in his place.

Yeah, I can't see something like this make him stop trying to reach his goal. I highly doubt Riza would stand for that

Of course not, Riza would beat him silly. Much worse than whatever Pride and them lot could ever do.

It is a fandub of a section of Ep.19, with English voices, stuff edited out, different sound effects, and all the screen shots reversed. Thought the quality was pretty good, as well as the acting, which was surprising. At times I dislike the voices of Hawkeye and Al, but it is a good watch all the same while we wait for the dub LOL.

Not a bad job for a fandub, but it's a little odd that the image of the video is inverted (i.e. Roy's holding the lighter with his left hand, not his right)

Woow... finally was able to get online and read the new chapter and all that... at first I was just completely heartbroken at Roy's predicament... but I did expect him to lose something heavy, as in, something important. It really made me so sad though! Roy's been through enough... but all of these past events were like tests to see if he's even capable of becoming the leader of Amestris. If he can make it through this (which I've no doubt he will) I think he'll be a perfect and strong leader. And he'll have Riza at his side always!! I guess that's the silver lining right there... promises of future Royai. Lol! But jeez... anime1 Roy got off easy....

Back on topic...people were talking about this a few pages back on the thread: Neither Roy nor Riza are in fighting condition right now. At. All.

However, it seems that the "final battle", if you will, is approaching. I can't exactly see Roy and Riza just sitting on the sidelines watching everybody else fight. (well not Roy...he can't watch anything.... ) So what do you think they'll do? I can see Riza maybe directing Roy in the fight somehow. Though I'm not sure Roy could adjust to blindness quite that quickly...

Also, I CANT WAIT FOR NEXT CHAPTER! The Royai potential is just too...awesome...

I wonder what Arakawa has planned for them in the upcoming chapters. I am sure it will surprise me. Can anyone imagine Riza giving a play by play of the fight?

I've been wondering what they're both going to do, but I can't really picture anything in my head, really. At first I thought that Riza would guide Roy's attacks, but they would still be really vulnerable. I think I might agree that Roy might make a barrier to surround them in the fight (someone said this a few posts ago), but then again, Father can do incredibly crazy things with Alchemy, so it's unlikely that they will be safe there either. With that reasoning, I think that they'll probably do something, I just have absolutely no idea what that might be.

Indeed; I'd say that neither of them is actually in any position to survive any final battle. I think they both will scrape through, though; they've certainly suffered enough.


I don't think the "directed attacks" strategy would work very well. Sure, Riza can point Roy's arm in the right direction and tell him what he is aiming at (though this wouldn't work well to begin with), but she wouldn't be able to give him other critical information, like how big his blast radius should be (can't hit allies!). Roy's attacks just rely too much upon visuals for that to work; can't transfer the thousand words of a picture all at once, while the picture is moving at high speed and trying to kill you.

curious thought for the upcoming fights: Pride's a holy terror when there are shadows, but is powerless in total darkness. He also seems to be nearing his end; I think a good nuking or three could finish him off. In order to create total darkness to enclose Pride in, he'd have to be sealed off from everyone else, thus making aim irrelevant.

...Of course, following that train of thought is kind of invalid, because we don't really know if a) Roy can make sparks now (consider the condition of his hands!) 2) the sealing-off strategy would even work for more than a split second with Father around III) Roy doesn't have anything ELSE wrong with him (oh gosh...) and... yeah, etcetera... just something that randomly came to me is all.

If we were to re-arm Riza and put her somewhere sufficiently guarded (also, where she didn't have to stand up) she might be able to contribute to some degree.

Also, I want to see Royai turn irrefutably canon as much as anyone else in this thread, I don't see any real possibilities for a good moment in the next chapter. The chimeras will probably stay well away from the sacrifices (at least at first), and Riza can't exactly run in her condition; she'll kind of be stuck away from Roy. Anguished yelling of names, I could see, but not much else. And while the probable first move when the determining fight breaks out is to get the wounded somewhere safe, I'm guessing that once that happens, they'll both be too busy being angry about not being able to help (at least at first.)

I dunno though. I'm being a pessimist, perhaps.

Well, May is there, so she could fix his hands. I think the bigger problem is that his gloves are shredded. But hey, he can do clappy alchemy now, so maybe he can create fire from scratch.

Well, it's not the issue of the circle; it's the issue of the spark. He's actually had a circle on his hand for a while (scars from his battle with Lust) but he's always needed something to create a spark. Rubbing the gloves together would probably also work, but there's still the main issue of aiming.

I haz an idea! How about... umm... whenever they need to fight ( I mean together, not against each other), Hawkeye could shoot in a place and Roy could create an explosion or flame in this place! He can hear the shots and knows where his foes are xD. I dunno why I have a random idea like that...

I think your idea of how Roy could still use flame alchemy is valid, but I doubt that he could just suddenly do that without a lot of practice. He will likely be pretty (excuse the bad humor...) useless. He will contribute in some way, though, I'm sure.
As for Riza, I'm not entirely sure how critical of a condition she is in right now. I doubt she'll be running around fighting, but we see her standing here:

She isn't even standing straight up. Her knees are buckling. And notice that she is holding her wound, too.

But she is supporting her own weight. She could probably shoot and walk short distances, if she pushed herself.

I am really looking forward to this fight. Ed will kick butt as usual, Izumi is awesome too, and Mei and Al. I'm curious about Hohenheim's role too. But from a royai standpoint, I think both Roy and Riza are pretty much out of the game except for small attacks.

On another note, how do you think the scene when Riza discovers what's happened to Roy will go?

Well... I guess it's just too soon to assume ANYTHING. Roy just got back from the Portal, he's still in shock, we have no idea if he'll be able to 'see' in another manner (through energy or whatever) or even if the 'ability' he acquired from the Portal will help him in any way...

So, I'm making no theories until I get to understand a little more of what's happening and what's going to happen.

*Riza sees Roy and runs up*
Riza: Sir! Thank god, you're safe, I...Why aren't you looking at me?
Roy: *sad look* It's because I, I can't see you anymore.
Riza: ...Oh, Colonel *tears* I'm sorry.
Roy: Don't cry, lieutenant. I order you not to cry.

Or something along those lines.

I am imagining the scene when Riza finds out about Roy to go something like this: (I'm trying to avoid putting too much blatant royai in this...but it's hard)

Riza: (entering) Colonel!
Roy: Hawkeye? (trying to locate her from the sound)
Riza: (walking up to Roy) Sir! Thank god...(notices his eyes)

(silence)

Roy: Hawkeye?
Riza: I'm here sir. I'm sorry.
Roy: (touches her face and feels tears. Riza flinches slightly) Don't cry. I order you not to cry.
Riza: (composing herself for his sake) (salutes) Sir.

Here is my version of what will happen when Riza finds out about Roy.

Riza: "Colonel, are you all right?" She then notices that something is wrong with Roy.
Roy: "Lt...please say something. Don't be upset this isn't your fault."
Riza: "If you think that this excuses you from all the paperwork that you are behind in, then you are wrong."
Roy: "Damn!"

This won't happen at all, but I figured a lot of people's dialogues would be angsty and I wanted mine to be humorous.

LAWL. Best dialogue ever. And I actually find this one the easiest out of all of them to imagine happening.

Hm, this kind of made me think, is it possible for Roy to learn Xingese alchemy? I guess everyone will have to after FatherDude is rid of, but perhaps because that all has to do with the flow of the Earth, he'll be able to direct everything easily without setting, like, everyone around him on fire? IDK much about alchemy adn the way it works, so I am 100% BSing this right now, but I thought I'd throw that out there.

Depends on what you count as "proof." I doubt she'll ever show much of it happening... but I can definitely see her throwing in a few things in whatever sort of epilogue we get that say, "OI. This happened," such as the gloves and some guns put away in a box, some sort of trick with paperwork, or some small child seen with Black Hayate who looks suspiciously like certain people...

(That last is particularly blatant, which is probably why I like the idea so much.)

By the way, which "meanness" in 94 were you referring to? (I reread the chapter, but was distracted by the pwnage...)

I assumed that the meanness referred to was the "When we're alone...." moment.... Of course it could also have been the cliffhanger at the end, but that's just how I took it.

I get the feeling it will be less obvious and more along the lines of the first anime's ending (ep 51) where it simply shows Riza helping a recovering Mustang around with basic actions. I get the feeling we also see Elysia and Gracia too.

Ah, lol. I thought that line was balanced out by some of the lines after Roy came charging back into the picture... oh, well.

RoyxRizaFan--I wrote a little Christmas fic today that takes place before... all this messiness, let's say (because I'm not specific in the fic, but it's pretty obvious that it's while they're all still together in Eastern or Central), and while it's not exactly Royai and not exactly humorous, it gave me the warm'n'fuzzies to write. Hopefully you can do something like that?

And I totally just wrote and posted a post-manga-in-my-mind oneshot that, when I re-read it, reminded me entirely too much of the end of episode 51. I just about tore my hair out, but I'm leaving it up, anyway.

There're many possibilities. ^^ But I don't think Arakawa will make it 'just go away', or even make it a source of 'uncharacteristic' Royainess. If she made him like that, it's for a reason. She may be cruel, but she's not unreasonable: it'll have a meaning later on.
I don't think Roy will ever see again unless there's a strong reason to do so, but I also don't think Arakawa would make anything that would crush and burn Roy permanently, nor will she go out of HER character to make a mushy Royai scene for when Riza meets up with Roy.
We'll have to wait and see.

I can so see an ep 51-esque style epilogue to this, it's very fitting. Very, very. But Arakawa hasn't ever really gone 'out there' with the romance, seeing as FMA isn't mainly romance... she'll probably just put something subtly in there, that only true fans can see.
