A couple of years ago I conducted a study for my sociology coursework that was pretty much this aruguement. My theory was that people who listen to a certain type of music wear a certain type of clothing.
Results: Yes, they do. It's probably different here in the UK to other places but those who listened to rap tended to favour sports clothes or fashion. Rockers on the other hand tried to be unique, not only wearing black for example. People called 'trendies' wore whatever was in fashion and listened to all that pop that normal people despise.
And I hate to say this and please don't take it the wrong way but people on a higher intellectual level tended to favour rock over rap. Why this is I will not explain but I'm sure Bacon will at some point

I miss the days when black people were known for jazz and blues music.
Not that I was even alive back then, but it would sure as hell beat the crap most of them are associated with nowadays.
I'll put it bluntly: The majority of rap/hip hop makes it very difficult not to be racist against blacks for someone like me.

Obviously, we should all know that this isn't absolute research, so let's not take this as a way to get all racist/bad mouthing, etc...But I'm glad you pointed this out as it does bring up an interesting issue. It would be nice to look more into this I think.
My opinion would be that it's probably due more to the fact that rap is appealing to an economic-social class that is not necessarily capable of obtaining the higher levels of education (i.e. financial issues, etc...)

Phew, thanks for not bashing me.
I suppose if I'm fair I did only study people between 15 and 19. This was my target as I think music means alot to people of this age. It was inspired by all the fights that broke out in my school over what you wore and so what music you listened to. I had a can and various fruit thrown at me because I dyed my hair a slightly dark colour and so I was a 'goth'. The fact that I wasn't actually a goth meant nothing...all they knew was I didn't listen to their music and so must be punished for it.
I loathed those years of my life. That wasn't even bullying that was what happened to most people.

For those of you who chose rap, I have a question: Why? What do you like about it that you don't like about rock, or guitar music in general? Do you actually identify with its subject matter? I would find that hard to believe, since most of you seem to be white or asian teenagers who live in the suburbs.
First... im not white, im black
second... i see your point but rock music doesnt sound good to me
some people like it well... i just dont,
third... to me rock music sounds like a bunch of yellin with guitars
the only rock i could possibly i if had to chose listen to is the Jay Z and Linkin Park combo
i guess i like rap so much is because i can relate to the music more (not the killing and the pimping and the ghetto) just the storys that the rap tells
i guess i just like the sound of the rhyming and beats put together
Carnal Malefactor

Uh... all forms of music that use vocals combine 'rhyming' and 'beats'.
It's just that the vast majority of them go well beyond that, and also incorporate things like melody, texture and harmonics.

Not exactly broken Japanese, but it does get annoying after a while when you constantly insert Japanese phrases in the midst of a mainly-English paragraph. I'd rather you write in Japanese completely even though I wouldn't understand a word of that.
I listen to both rock and rap but like already has been said/implied, most rap songs suck and their music videos are not even related to the songs and are just a pathetic excuse to show barely-covered women who are desperate to prove their worth.
