For those of you who chose rap, I have a question: Why? What do you like about it that you don't like about rock, or guitar music in general? Do you actually identify with its subject matter? I would find that hard to believe, since most of you seem to be white or asian teenagers who live in the suburbs.

I'm not a rap fan at all, but as someone who does like music and general aesthetics, I try to understand what there is to these things.
As far as message is concerned, I don't think it matters anymore. For some, I swear it's a shock value thing. They like the music only because it pisses their parents off. There is more shock content in rap than probably any other style (well, if you can understand the strange english dialect they use

).
Remember, this happens all the time. Heavy metal used to be the same way, but apparently, it's not as "nasty" as it used to be

(or rather it's more acceptable these days).
Then again, I didn't grow up in the inner city during the late '40's with a frustration of how sweet swing was and needing to express inner feelings more with dissonance, but I can still legitimately like
Bop music
