never got into FF8, the concept of the gunblade put me off.

why would you stab someone when you can shoot them? and if you are close enough to work the shots into a slash combo, why would you shoot them since at close range a slash is far more deadly?
Quistis88
It's because little boys like swords and guns, and when you put the two together, it's like a fanboys-will-love-this-game!recipe. The story of FFVIII has a little more romance than I or any other gamer would have liked, so Square might have wanted to compensate for that in weaponry. My hypothesis, at any rate.
hitokiri
bah... very simple formula for swords and guns...

guns = snipers, cowboys, spec ops

swords = samurai, ninjas, and the occasional paladin

plus who plays FF for the weapons, magic is always far more powerful and impressive.
Quistis88
Ahh, that's true. But in VIII, the battle system is a little different. With the Junction system, you can connect your Magic inventory with your stats. With 99 Curagas, your Vitality can have a substantial boost if you Junction the Curagas to your Vitality slot. But as you use up the Curagas you have in stock, your Vitality will decrease. Therefore, as you use up the Junctioned Magic, your stats go down. That was the challenge of the Junction system, perhaps, and so, having a good weapon is nearly vital.
hitokiri
wow, that sounds almost as illconceived as the sphere grid system. was it actually any good when put into pratice? or is it just another tired attempt at adding further resource management?
Quistis88
Personally, I never really like the Sphere Grid . . .

The Junction system has its pros and cons. A good thing is that as long as you have a healthy variety and/or supply of Magic, then you can boost your stats significantly. There is no longer any need to really take time levelling up (I hated levelling up, which is why I like the Junction system).

In FFVIII, it's probably best not to level up, because all your enemies level up along with the main character. So, the difficulty level will always be the same, unless you take advantage of the Junctions.

One of the cons I have already mentioned, but the other is that things like Guardian Forces (GFs, the summons) also have to be Junctioned. Furthermore, there is a compatibility factor that all players must take into consideration in the game. The more a character uses a GF, the higher the compatibility; the higher the compatibility, the less time it takes to summon the GF. However, when the Junction is switched (which players have to do often because there are many playable characters), the compatibility gauge drops since the GF is Junctioned to a new character.

I hope that makes sense and somewhat answers the question . . .

i think i get it. oh i just thought of a reason why i really dislike FFX and FFX-2, no overworld map. too much running around in tiny maps. i like the ability to directly control movement my character/airship. it makes for easier leveling., which i actually like as it allows me to get a better feel for the finer points of the battle system.

by the way if you didn't know there an easy leveling method in FF9, theres a cave where there is a ladder leading up, i think there was a well or something nearby, it leads to a mini-plateau where there are dragons. if you go up there first chance you get, you will be killed in one hit. but if you go back a little later, like 10 or 15 levels, it will take you all your immediate resources to win but you can easily get 4-5 levels a victory for the first couple of fights. good money too.

Hey people, first post in a while. Now my favorite final fantasy is by far 6. Great story full of original twists. Fantastic plot, filled with lovable characters, and even after teh 'twist' you feel compelled to recover all your teamates before taking on good old Kefka, the best ever final fantasy villan (surely you remember the Doma poisoning?).

I've enjoyed all the final fantasy games, except for X and X-2, which weren't as involving and overall...fun. Out of the playstation ones, I reckond 9 and 7 stand equal with me, I loved 9s characters, and I loved 7s characters. 8 I thought of as a downpoint, I only ever used GFs lol, they were too powerful, there should have been some restriction on them, also I was never able to take part in the pocketstation game on it (maybe someday ill get the pc version....). The plot on 8 was a bit corny as well, especially with the 'twists' ('we all came from the same orphanage...but we forgot etc.), it was kewl playing as Edea though smile.gif . I actually loved 9s minigames, especially the choboco one (has anyone heard the black mages version of the music from that.)

Finally 11, I'm downloading the demo now, so should come back with impressions soon lol.

(9 is the only one ive got 100% in as well smile.gif )

Since nobody talked about it yet: Adel made my day. biggrin.gif She's got to be the most kickass villain ever. (Final Fantasy series at least wink.gif)
Aqua_Alchemist
Okay, how about we make a topic with all the main villains in FF in, and out of them, who would win lol ph34r.gif .
Riza Babe
FFXI!! biggrin.gif

OK, but just so you know, Adel owns all. No question about that. wink.gif (Sadly I've only ever played FFVII, FFVIII and FFX... mellow.gif)

I like the overworld map, too. I thought FFX did have an overworld map of sorts, only you can't do anything with it. It just appears on screen to show you where you're headed next. Correct me if I'm wrong. And FFX-2, I'm not even going to bother with that one.

Ahh, the Grand Dragons. That's how I leveled up. That cave was somewhere in . . . Burmecia? The first place you come across where you have to ring all those bells. I don't remember the name.

I do use Grand Dragons to level up though. I make sure that Quina learns the Lv. 5 Death ability first, because apparently, Grand Dragons are always at Lv. 40 (I may be wrong, but whatever it is, it's a multiple of 5). Once I have the Hilde Garde III in my possession, I can go straight to the little island where the Daguerreo library is located and run around outside, using Lv. 5 Death on every Grand Dragon I encounter. One-hit KO every time, and if I need it, I can go inside the library to heal for a small fee.
Riza Babe
@Kase~ Because I love playing the game and I Guess it got to my head.

Not in burmecia, the cave leading to burmecia, where you fight the black mages for the first time, it has a moogle at the bottom, and i think it is the left path of a junction (before you go to fight black waltz 1 I think).
Quistis88
Gizamaluke's Grotto, then?
Aqua_Alchemist
^ Indeed wink.gif

I loved that game, pity I lent it out, and the guy I lent it to moved away.....
Quistis88
You lent it out!? ohmy.gif I'd never do that to my favorite games. You never know what people do to them at home.
Aqua_Alchemist
^ Yeah I know, I lent my Halo to my cousin as well, and he BROKE it. He's really bad with his possesions, leaves CDs all over the floor, he even runs them over with his wheelie chair, also I'm not lending magic cards to him for his 'tournament decks' anymore, because they come back bent and crumpled. At least it's not as bad as one of my friends, who let his brother roach one of my cards (the bloody zodiac dragon as well!! dry.gif ).

Ahh well, I'll get round to buying all the final fantasies again...eventually, they'll probably come out on one blu-ray disc on the PS3 anyway though smile.gif
hitokiri
argh.... now i have to find my copy of FF9 and play it again.

also as for the FF villian debate.... nobody, not even the fanboy supported Sephiroth, is more powerful than Trance Kuja. the man obliterated an entire dimension...
edsgirl
True, he did do that ! But I chose FF2! Its what got me started in this franchise in the first place! I'm just a fan of the classics!

oh...then seven tongue.gif
Quistis88
Why is VII also so overrated?
Slashrose1010
I like 7 the best probably. I know a lot of people hate 10 but I like it. 8 is also very nice. I like Squall and Zell was pretty cool. Auron and Tidus from 10 were great. Seymour was a wierdo.... but in a good way. smile.gif
Bleacher_Pirate
Final Fantasy VII, hands down is the best by far. It has all the componets for a good game, characters you come to love (and hate) an amazing plot, fighting system is dead on. I could go on about this game, go into each character and why they're all unique and different (excpet Cait Sith, I hate his guts, traitor.) So yeah, my vote goes to seven, it's a mind blowing game.
Le Monkey
Seven, All the way.
This is because its the only one for pc that I can get.

I can't decide between 7 or 10

I'll say 10 because Auron is the best!

The fact that it's the only game you've played does not make it overrated.

Can no one answer that question? ohmy.gif ph34r.gif
Slashrose1010
You think 7 is overrated... i guess it is abit talked about too much. I suppose because it is the first one with really good graphics for it's time. Also, everyone swoons over Sephiroth and Cloud. Sometimes it can be quite corny, the dialogue that is. Also, a lot of people who talk about it are the younger generation so they haven't had a chance to play the older ones.
IronFlame
I haven't played any of the others apart from some of 8 but alot of people say 7 is the best and never has been bettered.
Omakase Shimasu
@Badguy Debate: Fuja scares the living daylights out of me. ph34r.gif

Hmm, can't answer the question, Quisty. Don't know the answer although I've been asking around whenever I spot an FF fanatic. I don't understand either. Or why 8 is so underappreciated but does enjoy the luxury of a great fanbase. >>

FF 8 for me!
Ryuji1314
funny how no one put FF Tactics, other than that one I think that 7, 8, 9 and 10 are the best so far... I think that 12 looks pretty good. Though it might be a little over the top.
