I'm starting this topic in light of a comment made by another member. Does anyone actually think anime characters are "hot"? As in attractive. Tell me we are all still human in here!
NOTE: Not everyone is familiar with every anime characters. Please
include which anime that character is in.

Yes, I believe that some characters are drawn attractively.

Jan 11 2005, 03:14 PM
Indeed. Can't argue that fact. Although [it goes without saying] they're hot in a surrealistic/different way. I don't think I'd like to see some of the characters I think are hot in real life...

Jan 11 2005, 03:21 PM
@Omakase Shimasu Yeah, that would just sort of... ruin it, I guess. XB Like what I've been saying about Ed. Yeah, he's shmexy, but he would look completly different in real life. *_*

Well I guess your friend and I have something in common

j/k Still, I can't believe the opinions here. Maybe its age or some other contributing factor that makes this seem ridiculous. Maybe I'm the PSYCHO one here lol

Some anime characters are definatly hot. In my opinion, thinking an anime character is hot is the same as thinking a human actor is hot. You're not going to be able to get either one, so just whistfully dream from afar...

characters are drawn to be appealing, just not in a freaky perv way (dont get the two confused)

saiyanprince: I'm 19, although the last time I had a crush on an anime/manga character was... when I was 18

really spooky... even then it was more to do with the character than the way of drawing, Even though the characters aren't real they have their own personality that attracts me/others as if they actually were real.
And about looking hot.. Hmm.. yeah.. sometimes I start liking characters just because of their appearance

I love the way their pictured... especially bishonen

....I don't know... maybe I'm wierd and it's all about preferances but I think they're (at least sometimes) hotter or better looking than real life characters. Figures.. since they're created to match a certain visual and ideal picture. But I have some friends that wouldn't understand my facination

(they're not anime/manga fans though)
Kitoky: Yup! as you see, I agree.

I'm also a fangirl of certain characters and just "love" them..

Or maybe just a mature adult who can tell the difference between reality and fantasy, which you seem to have confused. They are cartoons, not real people and they are not "attractive". Their personalities, their powers, their attire and other attributes make them interesting. The question was, "Does Anyone Actually Think Anime Is "hot"? I posted that because someone said they thought characters were what we would actually view as good looking. Again, they are just cartoons, it's just unrealistic. I am just as much a fan as anyone here. I'm not knocking anyone. "Bastard", wow that's the first bit of hostility I've seen in this forum. Is that just immaturity or a cry from someone who spends more time with fantasy characters than real people? Or maybe both?

Hmm.. I don't appreciate name calling, but maybe you went too far as well?
I'm not going to repeat my post, you might as well read it and accept my opinion too. Does it seem like I can't tell the difference between reality and fantasy? Does it seem that liking fictional characters and finding them attractive doesn't make me a "mature adult"? If you don't consider the characters attractive it's fine with me.
I don't need to be told that "they're not real". I'm very aware of that. But I'm a natural dreamer and like to imagine. I like to get out of the boring world and dream
a bit. Isn't that what fantasies are created for?

I suppose you are right. I'm just regarding the posts I see from users that seem to be a little "out there". I to dream and fantasize as well, I just don't get the whole fangirl/fanguy whatever thing. I see some people who enjoy anime as much as I do but don't take it so extremely. Again most of that was in response to the "name calling". I feel that most of the fans in here act in a reasonably adult manner despite their ages. The person I quoted obviously did not. I don't mean to rant and that's not the way to be a mature adult. I'm only talking about the extremists, which there are a few. Oh well, didn't mean to take it overboard. It was mostly aimed at love_me_destroyer.

It's okay!

I'm sorry that I took it so personally. It's also that I get a lot of comments about my obsession with anime and I actually think it's still healthy. I'm glad if you understand my opinion too!

I take anime/books/fiction seriously in general. It's a great thing to be able to dive so deep into the world that it seems real in a way. I like feeling close to it/the characters

.
Fangirl/fanboy... probably it's when some characters really appeal to you/touch you deeply/ are some people you can relate to.
saiyanprince
Jan 12 2005, 01:27 PM
It's cool. I too feel close to some of the characters like you. I especially relate to Spike in Cobow Bebop. Seeing the future in one eye and the past in the other. Trying to escape the past and having it catch back up with you. And although Ed probably had the worst time becoming a man, I can relate to the harships of growing up and having to be an adult, as well as a father, at an early age. Anime is totally healthy. If you get it and understand it, you probably have a GREAT imagination. Being a writer myself, I enjoy the charcter development and storyline more than anything though.

I personally don't find anime characters hot. My reason for choosing my favorite characters is due to how well they are written (personality/development wise). A good writer should make you suspend your disbelief and actually make you care what happens to the characters in a story.

I wholeheartedly agree. It's the quality of the character that matters. FMA for example had me in suspense the whole series about what was going to happen to ALL the characters.

Ofcourse someones thinks ithat anime characers are hot why would there be hentai if anyone wouldnt think so?

And i my self think some anime characters are hot cause of their appearence and ofcourse personality. And it seems that im not only one who thinks so

.But when i watched FMA i figuret out that theres cute caracters too like litle japanese kids awww they are so cute i wish that i could get one some day

I'm sure everyone here has seen at least one or two Hentai films. Those are ridiculous. How much time does it take to animate that crap? People who are into porn already have issues. But when u like cartoon porn, come on?!?!?!?! Just my opinion of course. I'm sure someone will chime in here and defend Hentai any moment.
icanflyouch
Jan 12 2005, 04:23 PM
I don't like hentai, I just like yaoi. DDDDD:
But really, it's just a matter of opinion, some people like it, some people don't. Just like you can't see why people like these things, most people can't see why you don't like them. I think stuff like shota is gross, but I don't go insulting everybody who likes it. I understand that they like it for a reason and who am I to judge that?
saiyanprince
Jan 12 2005, 04:50 PM
I'm not judging or insulting, only expressing my opinion. Hentai is a useless form of anime. I would challenge anyone to give me a good reason to like it. Not because I'm judging or because I think I'm right. It gives anime a bad name.
icanflyouch
Jan 12 2005, 04:53 PM
People like it because it turns them on. It's really that simple. And if you really look at it, anime itself has no use. We don't need it, it's just there for our entertainment. Saying hentai is a usless form of anime is kind of hypocritical.
saiyanprince
Jan 12 2005, 05:13 PM
HYPOCRITE- a person who puts on a false appearance of virtue or religion.
I can assure you I am not religious in ANY way. And my appearance is not false. When cartoons start to turn you on, it just SEEMS wrong. Anime, like any form of entertainment, is there for our entertainment of course. And explain to me how anime has no use. I'm just curious about your opinion on the matter.
icanflyouch
Jan 12 2005, 05:55 PM
What about "a person who professes beliefs and opinions that he does not hold"? I never heard about it pertaining to just religion. I wouldn't use the word hypocrite if I didn't know what it ment.
Sorry, didn't mean to offend you or anything. ^^;;
Anime is there to entertain you, pretty much. You can live without it. People before us lived without it. It does nothing but keep us entertained, which other things could do. Sure, we like it, but that doesn't meen it helps us out in our goals, does it? Name one thing necessary in life that requires anime.

Wow, this topic has gotten really heated (no pun intended)(seriosly)
Anyway... I don't know if this counts as anime being important but I met my bf through anime. Long story... but still, it DOES have a purpose as long as you don't take it too seriously.

*shall not join in the currently heated discussion* Cool down people.
Hmm..yeah, the one thing that attracted me to Anime in the first place is the pretty drawings. The bad guy is usually as pretty or even prettier than the good guys.

Seriously though, I usually choose which Anime to read/watch by the art, then by plot. Of course, I value plot as well but choosing an Anime/Manga by plot requires you to actually read it first, which takes a whole lot of time.
Omakase Shimasu
Jan 13 2005, 02:04 AM
Seconded.

But... can't you find anime characters hot while still thinking about their personality and character in general? Maybe you first thought about personality traits and whatnot before you found the character physicially appealing? I know I did with Ed.... and Roy. >_>

How about Envy? Then there's Kimbley, Greed, Lust
Talking about other series: The list could go on forever
As for the main subject: Finding an anime character hot is very much similar to people considering a character from a movie, or a book hot. ...They don't really exist either. (Its totally fine to fantasize)

Ah...let the Character Gurus take a bow here. You see...we all know about the "bad boy" syndrome where girls are attracted to the "bad boys". Apparently, we also have this itch to nurture in us. Most of us, if we see someone in pain, would have this urge to soothe the pain. Therefore, angsty guys are more interesting as we can so-called "heal" them.
That's a theory anyway. Personally, I just like angsty guys. They are usually more complicated and interesting than the good guys.

It's also possible that the so-called "bad boys" tend to have qualities that we are prehistorically attracted to in a mate: strength, courage, etc.
