wrong there were message boards back in the 80s too, the first BBS's and other more archiac institutional networks.

Really only physics departments had them. In the 90's they became more public.

90's - when AOL came of age - and is unfortunately still going.

I wouldn't know about that. It's maybe because i am asian, but 5 bucks a cup is way to much for me, since people can live on 50 bucks for a year in India. So everytime i do have a yearning i just remind myself of that and place the five in a special compartment in my wallet and just send it there. It's often ironic tho, i woudn't even look at a homless guy if i pass one by. Unless my friends order too much food and they doggie bag it for them, which i think is totally pointless.

that is true. but...

A. 50 dollars buys a hell of alot more there.
B. they could always leave. if people in china are willing to live in sealed shipping containers for the entire overseas journey from china to the US... well then there is nothing stopping anyone from leaving anywhere, if they are determined enough.

problems with that - many are getting the tech support jobs that used to be in the US. They typically just post on technical message boards for answers to questions. I used to see it a lot. I've even heard from a CPA that there are some tax preparers looking to ship tax information to people in India to do your taxes. Then it gets shipped back to the US to file. Basically a person capable of doing your taxes can do it for less and therefore net the Tax Preparation company a lot more money.

Another problem is that maybe people in India like breaking down oil ships putting their lives on the line to recycle scrap metal.

a) your point a does not justify anything
cool.gif if your second point is realistically true, what's the percentage of survival?
Can you guarentee me it's at least 50/50? Don' go into that give me freedom or death crap
c) running away from their problems isn't going to sove anything, it'll just create even more problems, especially for those already living in the first worlds. Staying and solving the problem is a better way of resolving things, they just need a little help sometimes.

but then again, there is no 100% guarentee that my money would even get to them, considering the situations there. heck, I might just be doing this to make myself feel better, after all i'm just a spoiled 16 year old american brat.

we're even using them as telemarketers. It's amusing because they're given a list of "common" english phrases to say when a problem arises. heh, you know what to do the next time you order from a catolgue.

and what exactly is the problem with this? screw the americans, its called a competative global job market. the whole point of business is to make money at all costs; not to be nice, help people, make a difference, look after its own people or any other crap like that. altruism is the realm of the peace corps not multinational companies.

good for the indians, they finally are creating a competitive semi-skilled labor force. if americans lose jobs over it too bad, maybe they should go back to school and get a(nother) degree.
Thievesvinegar
hah. I don't think it's the education, its the cheap labor. We think we're worth too much.
ἀρχή
The only problem was the fact that they would be leaving the country. If they stay, they may be able to increase their own market.

I agree with you hitokiri - Screw american economics. If we can't compete, then move around. I only want to see work conditions get better, but that won't happen until the entire world hits the economic market and there's better labor competition.
hitokiri
no what i'm saying is put yourself into a highly skilled or highly educated position. if you think about it all these outsourced jobs require little to no talent, these people can be trained in no more than 10 weeks. now if you were a MD or you were a highly skilled electrical engineer, your chances of being outsourced is virtually nil. thats why i think farming should be done by machines and farmers should be outlawed. think about it farming wastes the potential of a human life.
Thievesvinegar
So what's the criteria for you to decide what potential a life can meet?
ἀρχή
But then you'd have a flood in the market for knowledge workers. There will eventually be too many knowledge workers and those who can't obtain the knowledge worker status won't have any place to go as their jobs will have been outsourced.

I remember reading a couple of case studies on work outsourced to S. Korea and another on the Philopines. Pretty interesting how companies are taking advantage of the working poor in those countries. Governments don't want to increase legislation to help the condition because they don't want the companies to leave.

Anyway, a free market assumes full disclosure and that's not happening. We don't know about conditions of workers to best make decisions regarding boycotts.

I don't remember but didn't big time outsourcing happen in the 90's? I can't remember if they started doing it in the 80's or not.
hitokiri
well i'm just sayin that what does plowing a field in the middle of nowhere contribute to society? in fact farming is a HUGE detriment to the economy, only 30% of all crops in the US are actually consumed by americans. the rest of it is bought by the government with taxpayer money and either destroyed or stored so the crops aren't virtually worthless. why do we do something this dumb instead of just reducing production levels? so these uneducated, talentless punks can continue to be yokels. if being a leech on society isn't a waste of potential, i don't know what is.

edit: the late 80s and the early 90s were the beginnings of outsourcing. don't you remember that buy crappy overpriced american products to support your country propaganda?
Thievesvinegar
it doesn't seem like farming is the problem then.
hitokiri
actually it is... cause first you have to move this labor force into a new field, ie force them not to be farmers, before you can discontinue the subsidies. else the economic factors will create a situation akin to the dust bowl scenario, which leads to MAJOR depression.
ἀρχή
Ah yes, I remember that stupid propaganda where they kept pushing the "made in USA" labels. The problem was that US products were too expenseive tongue.gif

It is true that the subsidies in farming is just rediculous. It gets to the point where it's a way of continuing a lifestyle regardless of the market. In the US, that's pretty typical - someone complains about losing out on their way of life and then there are government subsidies to keep it going.

Imagine if government took the same attitude toward farming that it has toward certain other business areas - you know, the 'hands off' approach that we say we have. US economic politics are so hypocritical.

Another 90's thing that should be mentioned: Coup in Soviet Union to bring out Boris Yeltson (sp)

Were those things even MADE in the United States? I heard that they were made in Usa, Japan! tongue.gif Heh, heh...irony.

I love the 90s so much, but 'I love the 90s' is kinda bad. They left a lot of things out! I know there's a 'Part Deux' coming out, but why wait until then? C'mon! Who remembers things about the 90's?

For example: I remember Power Rangers. I loved that show. Life was not worth living if I couldn't see the movie. I had a crush on the guy who played the Green/White Ranger as a kid. wub.gif

Power Rangers were the best back in the day! i was like five years old and i really wanted to be kimberly, the pink ranger. it sucked though because when ever i used to play with my brothers they used to be like, "no, you can't be the pink ranger because you love yellow and kimberly is the girl i like." it used to make me so made because they used to laugh at me for being the chinese girl. i hated that!

I remember things about the 90's. I mean, it wasn't all that long ago.
It's funny how the conversation from the top of the page is so drastic from the one at the bottom. Now I miss Hito.

I remember seeing this episode where they fought a lipstick and a purse. That was the end of me watching PR .

I didn't like her, the press Idolizes her far to much. They always mention that Charles cheated but never mention how many affairs Diana had. There has only been one documentary about her affairs.
Chiyo
I was a bridesmaid the day she died, and on the day of her funeral quite by coincidence. People were disgusted that someone could have a wedding on her funeral....the BBC filmed me and my mother as part of a 'what people are doing on this sad day' thread.
Popogeejo
The day she died all I did was mope because Cartoon network stopped to give us news. What the hell did I care?
I don't even recall her funeral.
