No specs or announcements for extras have been released to my knowledge. Though you can buy a boxed set that comes with Volume 1 of the series and a starter set metal box that can hold five of the DVD series volumes.

At Suncoast we'll have it on sale for probably 29.99 or 39.99, from what I remember the regular price is 39.99 but regardless I know for the week it comes out it will be on sale. And you people wanting figures you can also get the trading arts figures at Suncoast as well. We have each figure in a see through package so you know who you're getting and they're 6.99 a piece. At the moment only Ed, Al, Winry, and Roy have been released. I know we're going to get other merchandise eventually so I'll let you guys know what to look for when you go get yourself the first DVD!

I reserved my copy at Suncoast yesterday and they marked it as $42.00, which I think has to be a mistake. That is ridiculous. Besides I saw that the person marked the DVD without the box as $19.99. How could the boxset be $20 more than just the DVD even with the CD? So if you find out the exact price for the box set the opening week, please let me know. I figure the price should be the same throughout all the Suncoasts.
And thanks for keeping us informed about the merchandise.

Suncoast is really expensive one time I went there right after I went to Best Buy and things cost like $10 more. I looked it up at Target.com and they had the list price as $49.98 and their price as $34.99 so yeah pretty expensive, my brother and I decided we're going to split the price. This is going to be the first series I'm actually going to attempt to collect, series really do end up costing a lot.

To defend the company I work for, we're more expensive because we
have to be. It's places like Wal Mart that are killing us smaller movie companies. According to my boss there's roughly 200-300 Suncoasts nationally whereas according to this documentary about Wal Mart I watched a few weeks ago, there's millions and millions of Wal Marts world wide. You have no idea how annoying it is helping customers as much as you possibly can only to have them practically spit in your face by saying oh no it's a whole $3 cheaper at Wal Mart let's go there! At the very least go to Media Play it's a few dollars cheaper and it's owned by the same company as Suncoast.
It always makes me sad to hear people putting down the place I work for when I work my butt off to help anime fans every time they come into my store.
Anyway you're not going to find the box much cheaper than $35-40 because the box itself is a piece of metal, plus there's a 20 page color booklet, plus the soundtrack, and plus the DVD itself. If you want to get the box cheapest you pretty much have to get it the week it comes out because most places have the price lower the opening week. Here are some examples of prices online
http://animenation.com/fp18130.html-Animenation $37.49
http://www.rightstuf.com/cgi-bin/catalogmg...tem/64455/4/0/0-Right Stuf $37.49
http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.gsp...duct_id=3511624-Wal Mart
without the box is 16.98 while the list price is 19.99 meaning if they carry the box it will probably be around $35
http://www.target.com/gp/detail.html/sr=8-...asin=B0006H324I-Target $34.99
so at the moment the price seems to go from $34-42

Sorry if it sounded like I was dissing Suncoast. I shop there all the time, I am a replay member and I will be getting all my FMA merchandise there. Its really sad but the people even know me at my Suncoast. So I do really like Suncoast, I like that they always have what I want on opening day, that I can get anime merchandise besides DVDs and the people there actually know what anime is. Heck I even liked Suncoast before I was into anime because it was the only place I could find certain old classic movies.

Not to insult you guys or anything, but maybe more people would shop or buy stuff at Suncoast if you guys would try to compete with the prices a bit more. Such as price matching with your competitors. Someone's not going to go across the street to Wal-mart or where ever to get the item for 3 dollars less if you give it to them right there for 3 dollars less. If Media Play owns suncoast as well and they have it there for cheaper, than there is no reason you shouldn't be willing to match their price either. Just saying, its good business sense.
I'd also like to add that Best Buy has a great anime selection that continues to grow. It used to be part of the Sci-fi/horror section, but now its got its own category and section of shelf space. Target is kind of getting there, so at least they see the popularity and lucrativeness(?) of the genre.

Yeah I totally understand where everyone is coming from because Suncoast is expensive and I have no idea why we don't price match. Unfortunatley I have no say over our prices or anything so there's very little I can do.
As for the person complaining about Funimation, the only way you'll get subtitles on a non funimation DVD is bootlegs. The thing about bootlegs is the money doesn't go towards the original creators. And if you think American anime prices are high try getting actual Japanese DVDs XD

Jan 1 2005, 11:10 PM
The reason why Suncoast doesn't price match is because it would go out of business. Suncoast is a specialty shop and thus its costs are probably a lot more than stores like Walmart, Best Buy and Target. I know that might not make sense, but in a sense when you are paying higher prices at Suncoast you are paying for better quality products. True particular DVDs are the same, but Suncoast has a wider selection and sells certain things that you cannot find in Target, Walmart and Best Buy. Of course this doesn't matter to everyone, and even saving $3 dollars is probably worth it for a lot of people, but this is the reason why Suncoast has higher prices.
And I would assume the Fullmetal Alchemist DVD covers will be very similar to the Japanese ones.
TheVileOne
Jan 1 2005, 11:23 PM
I dunno about that. Just about everything at Suncoast I can find at Best Buy. Best Buy probably has one of the best DVD selections in the country and they are catering to more niche products, titles, audiences with them.
Suncoast has a lot of action figures and collectibles that are not sold elsewhere, but those are overpriced as well

.
Anyway, I really doubt price matching would make Suncoast go out of business.
Kirara
Jan 2 2005, 09:27 AM
Well when I went to Best Buy there were a lot of things I couldn't find, but that could have been the particular day. But Best Buy still isn't a speciality shop. Also Suncoast is located in malls and the cost of that is higher than not being in a mall, so that drives prices up. As a speciality shop you will also probably get better personal service in Suncoast, although Best Buy does have pretty good customer service too.
Not that Best Buy, Target and Walmart are bad stores either (well Target is because it overworks my friend) but besides really liking Suncoast, Suncoast is also more convienent for me personally to get to. But of course that has nothing to do with the prices.

um. Speaking of Best Buy. Is there an exact price on the dvd w/ and w/o the box?
TheVileOne
Jan 2 2005, 11:30 AM
Yes. Pre-order prices are $24.99 for the regular edition, and $33.99 for the box set. Since its Best Buy, I imagine those prices might get knocked down a little for the sales cost when its first released.

Jan 3 2005, 01:03 PM
Kirara is definantley right. If Suncoast wasn't located in malls we could probably afford to lower our prices, but again there are only about 200-300 Suncoasts, think about how many Best Buys there are. Another thing is Best Buy doesn't make their money off of DVDs, they make it off of everything else like big screen televisions, sound systems, fridges, etc. Think about how much those things cost. Target and Wal Mart also aren't making their money off DVDs alone, they sell clothes, groceries, and more. Whereas Suncoast only sells movies, posters, and figures. If we sold big screen tvs and groceries we would be able to knock down the prices, I mean seriously trying to compare Best Buy, Wal Mart, K Mart, and Target to Suncoast makes no sense whatsoever. Best Buy, Wal Mart, etc. are all huge companies that depend on more than just DVDs. Even Media Play, a store owned by the same company as Suncoast and Sam Goody, can afford to be a few dollars cheaper because they sell books, videogames, DVDs, and more.
If you still think Suncoast is too pricey think of it this way. How much money does the average American family spend when they grocery shop? It's not out of the ordinary for families to spend $200+ a WEEK at Wal Mart. And think about how large Wal Mart is, especially if it's a super store, and think about how many families go shopping there every WEEK. That's $200 a family and you probably get around 100-200 families DAILY. On average at Suncoast we get $2,000-4,000 a day. To equal the amount of money a family spends at Wal Mart we have to sell $200 worth of DVDs. Considering most people only buy 1 or 2 DVDs when they go to Suncoast and considering unlike Wal Mart who is busy during the week while we're primarily busy on the weekends, to make up for that gap we have to raise the price of the DVDs.
As for Best Buy, if someone buys a big screen tv there that's anywhere from $1,000-2,000 (keep in mind the price of a big screen tv is probably the equivalent of half of what a Suncoast store makes on a weekday) It's also likely Best Buy sells several big screen tvs daily so that can be anywhere from $2,000-$8,000 daily from big screen tvs alone. It's the same with fridges, sound systems, etc. Companies like Best Buy have products that can make $1,000 in one purchase whereas Suncoast, a company that ONLY sells DVDs, would have to sell 33 DVDs at a price of $29.99 to make $1,000. If we were to lower the price of the average DVD to $19.99 we would have to sell 50 DVDs to equal $1,000. Now keep in mind most people only buy 1-2 DVDs and we aren't busy during the week. While a $10 difference doesn't seem like a lot, in the long run it IS a lot.
So to sum up what I'm saying, Wal Mart, Best Buy, and Target make their money off of more than just DVDs, plus since they're larger, easier to find stores, they make a lot more money. Whereas Suncoast is a small business that depends ONLY on DVDs and we have no items that cost over $300, we have to make up for it. Sure it seems like we're an evil corporation that likes sucking money out of your pockets, if you think of the big picture, we make higher prices because we HAVE to or we wouldn't survive. If you've read and understood what I've said in this post you would understand that there's no way we can compare with Wal Mart and Best Buy
As for action figures being pricey at Suncoast? Dude, the Fullmetal Alchemist trading arts figures are $6.99 which is about a dollar more than you'd be getting them in Japan. If you go to a convention you have to plop down $5-6 on a trading arts figure. That's in a box. Meaning you can't see what it is. Meaning you have to keep buying them over and over and over to get them all. At Suncoast the figures are in clear packages so you know who you're getting. The only figures I ever see in our store that are over priced are either huge 18 inch figures or the Berserk and FLCL figures which are 17.99 a piece which is cheaper than you'd get them at most conventions
TheVileOne
Jan 3 2005, 01:54 PM
Sorry angieness, but 24.99 is way too much for Appleseed action figures so whatever. Its nice that you are selling those FMA trading arts figs for 6.99, but you know, I'm not going to spend that much on little inanimate figurines.
I don't dislike Suncoast. Its a cool shop and they have an interesting selection and I like browsing in it, but seeing as to how overpriced most anime already is, I don't feel like contributing to the problem. Like having to pay $25-30 dollars for an anime DVD with only 3 episodes is kind of ridiculous.

Fullmetal Alchemist: Starter Set: Uncut - DVD : $33.99
i am still thinking of either going to best buy or walmart >.< ... can't choose.
BTW: even though suncoast can't be compare to best buy, target, etc. their stuff is over price! and i notice that they don't just sell dvd there... they seem to also sell DVD Players and etc so they aren't just making money off dvd.
angieness
Jan 7 2005, 11:08 PM
we are just making money off DVDs yo, we have a whole 3 DVD players that we sell and they're all off brand things that cost 29.99-39.99. There are also 3 different portable DVD players we sell around 299-399 and in the whole 7 months I've been working we haven't sold a single one. So yep we just make our money on DVDs, to say a few off brand DVD players and a few portable DVD players that never sell make any impact on our sales is a great exagerration. So yes, we have to make our DVDs more expensive or we wouldn't survive.
If you guys buy anime anywhere don't go to Wal Mart! Wal Mart kills off smaller businesses. KB Toys in my mall just closed and around the country the stores are nearly extinct thanks to Wal Mart. Also that great thing called Netflix is hurting thanks to Wal Mart's Netflix-like program. Don't support them!
Best Buy on the otherhand bothers me a little because the company used to own Musicland (the company that is in control of Suncoast, Sam Goody, and Mediaplay) and during the time Best Buy owned Musicland, Musicland lost a lot of money. Apparently Best Buy was trying to phase them out or something which makes no sense but it's what I've been told by my boss. But still, Best Buy is the lesser of two evils when it comes to Best Buy and Wal Mart so if you don't like the place I work at, at the very least support the lesser evil.

I know I for one hate going to Wal Mart because it's an obstacle course where I have to avoid people who randomly stop walking. In the middle of the store. And then like you see those people that are all AHM GONNA SMACK YOU KIDS IF YOU DONT SHUTUP! that are all bad parent like. And then you go into the music section and there are like 5 year olds talking about smoking and cussing. And then there's like a herd of ultra Christian women that are gossiping and they have bumper stickers that are about abortion and fetuses and stuff. It's really not insulting to me if you go shop at Wal Mart because the stores themselves crack me up

It's not that hard to get a job at Suncoast so if you need a job and one is nearby you're pretty much guarenteed to get a job there if you like anime. I got hired on the spot because no one at my work knew anything about anime, so it does help if you let them know you know a lot about it.
As for Suncoast being in Canada, I have no idea! As far as I know it's only in the US, and sadly it's not even that common in the US since it's a smaller business. For Canadians it'd probably be the easiest just to buy online. Probably the best bet for anyone who is short of cash and can't afford Suncoast or doesn't want to support the evilness that is Wal Mart
