bryantq
While still unconfirmed by Viz's website or staff, http://www.time.com/time/columnist/printou...,956125,00.html reports that VIZ has licensed Fullmetal Alchemist for distribution within the United States and is set for June.

Once we get a confirmation, this does mean that we will voluntarily remove all Fullmetal Alchemist Manga downloads from our site.

Hope this is a faux... <.<

With FMA's rise in popularity among American audiences, it's only a matter of time... ^^;

Text as listed at Time.com:

FULL METAL ALCHEMIST
By Arakawa Hiromu
A long awaited 4-volume manga series that tells the story of young brothers Edward and Alphonse Elric who attempt to use the science of alchemy to bring their mother back to life, with life changing and action packed results. (June)
==============================

If you look at what they said about the Hagaren Manga its said to be a 4 volume series period. But if you remember the news surrounding the full length of the books its likely to have a 20 volume run. My conclusion - bullshit unless the
company comes out and says they got it
RolfKaese
lol 4 volumes only what the hell.. wonder where they get their infos from ... ^^;;
Guest
Waiiit maybe Viz plans on condencing a 20 volume series into 4

Volume 1 (Eng. V.) Chapters 001 - 030
Volume 2 (Eng. V.) Chapters 031 - 050
Volume 3 (Eng. V.) Chapters 051 - ???
Volume 4 (Eng. V.) Chapters ??? - ???
hagane_no_tokage
oh. my. god... that would take them like 7 YEARS to do! they're soooo slow! it'd be different if they were GOOD, you know...you can't rush genius...but they're AWFUL! sad.gif
Horus
Well give Viz, the benifit of a doubt with Hagaren; look at how well the core fans enjoy their translation of Masashi Kishimoto's Naruto. Wait who am I kidding they completly poo-pood the translation of the Jutsu (Techniques) so Hagaren is in good hands .... hehe hehe he.... RolfKaese, bryantq put those knives back now!!!!

Manga companies license series by volumes, i.e. they license it a book at a time.

Therefore the news article can be read as "VIZ has confirmed they will publish the first 4 volumes of FMA for North America, the remainder of the series dependant on the results of those sales."
hagane_no_tokage
so that means readmanga.com can still update with new chapters, right?? ~_~
AC
It's been pointed out on other sites that the "4 volume" thing could have been simply mistaking information about "4 chapters per volume".
Ana
nnnooo! i hope it's not true, i wouldnt be able to get hold of the manga sad.gif lucky americans
Guest
even if they do license them and everything, can't you continue translating? cuz i mean the people completely screw up almost eveything they say. just like that Horus person said about the naruto series, they completely changed the names of the jutsus so i dont think most hagne fans would like them changing what they say and stuff
Riykon
Hey, would you look at that.. It seems that Time changed it.. Now it says that Full Metal Alchemist is a 9-volume-manga series....

"FULL METAL ALCHEMIST

...... How about they say 'ongoing', and get this volume count over with?

And Horus does have a very good point. I am still recovering from shock on what had changed. Not only the jutsus, but the personalities, character names, etc. Next thing you know, VIZ will become like 4Kids and start editting out blood.

Sorry.. I'm a cynic for these things.

Ah, and for the previous post: I suppose legalities prevent many from even daring to make a translation. But then again, sites like Naruto Fan aren't unknown to the world, and VIZ surely knows about it, but it doesn't seem there has been an action to remove the manga from Naruto Fan..

My question: Will distributing through the IRC Channels be happening?
hagane_no_tokage
could scans of the originals still be posted, in that case? at least for those of us who can speak japanese, can't we at least be humored with the real thing if a translation can no longer be provided?
Riykon
But the raws would add so much suspense that it'd be WAY too nerve racking.. I mean, I can tell a little from the kanji with my Chinese dictionary right next to me, but we could end up thinking entirely the wrong thing.. unsure.gif

One of you'd people must do the honor of translating for us, if that happens. laugh.gif

The real thing can be gotten through Amazon.co.jp, or global.yesasia.com, or any of your specialist manga import store... so what's the problem?
RolfKaese
that not everyone lives in japan wink.gif

Or knows Japanese tongue.gif
Argh... I hope I'll be able to get scanlations from somewhere...
urm but anyway... it seems quite sure now that FMA is going to be published by Viz... I don't know if it's that bad. I have read Viz manga and the only thing that really bugged me was how they "flipped" it, but now they don't do that anymore(I think tongue.gif ) Oh and they don't translate possible name suffixes tongue.gif I don't like that either.
It's coming out in June? Noooooo! I have to wait so long!
That's the most annoying thing tongue.gif .
another guest
Screw it, I'm just downloading all the scanlates I can get my grubby hands on, before Viz tells these guys to take them down. That should last me for a while.

Broadband connection + computer with way too much free space on its hands = hoarding just because I can.

mean?

Do you guys want the translated version or don't you?
- If yes, then buy it when it starts coming out in June.

You want the 'real thing' or don't you?
- If yes, then buy it via online or local manga stores.

You guys here sure sound very contradictory to what you want...

Or is the true answer...

this sucks. america sucks. mad.gif

i agree with tokage, could the raws still be posted? with enough time and my dictionary i can figure out at least the gist of the dialogue. usually i can find scanned raws and summerwolf's translations on the lj fma community, but it'd be nice to have the raws on the site too smile.gif

"Screw Arakawa and Square Enix, we want them slaving away, drawing comics for us for free!!! ph34r.gif

if local manga stores actually sold the manga for the price that is listed on the back of the manga (i.e. 390 in most cases, which is equivalent to approximately $4.00 US currency), then i *would* buy from them... but they scalp the hell out of them. $5 i could live with, but a lot of these local specialty stores charge $8-$10 for a $4 manga, and that's just lousy on so many levels. as for buying online...uhm, have you checked out shipping charges from japan lately?? it costs more to ship the damn things than the books cost themselves!

i don't live in japan, but i can speak/read japanese, so if someone can provide a scan of the manga that i WOULD buy if it didn't cost three times as much to own if you happen to live in america, i will be satisfied. as for viz and their translations, they can suck my nose, because if they do to hagaren what they have done to naruto and inuyasha, there is no hope, all is lost, and it is best to repent now...

and i resent that 'true answer' you suggested. i have a lot of respect for manga artists, i know what a difficult and time-consuming art it is, i've done several of my own, TYVM... if i lived in japan or visited more often, i would be more than happy to support arakawa-sensei and square enix, but since i don't and can;t afford to, i'm not going to pay double or triple to get something sent to me when i can get a perfectly good electronic version for free. ;p
Kihaku
Jeez guest, I don't think I sounded contradictory. I wrote that the most annoying thing is to wait until June. I guess that shows that I'm buying the manga? tongue.gif
And about buying online. Not everyone can do it. And then the shipping costs.. which were already mentioned.
And also, I appreciate the work of the manga artists too. It's true that I like to read what I can without spending a lot of my money, but if I can't afford it, I can't. Then I can't read it. Some manga I just love so I don't mind spending money on them. Some I love so much that I don't mind spending money on them even if I can read it free (like getting it from the library or from a friend) Now that's a lot wink.gif.
Kiddo
I just wondered.^^ You tell that you buy manga for online. Could you tell me an adress or where I can buy too because I want to support fma and rather I read a book than stare computer window. And are they going to pupliced translated fma manga year 2005 june? Do I understand correct?
Guest
if they do translate it into english there's no way i'm gonna buy it. i mean even the ones translated into chinese are better than english ones. america just dubs too much mad.gif
blueices
Since there has been so much Viz bashing as of late, I decided to go to the local Barnes and Noble and see for myself what was up with their translations.

[blue enters manga section, picks up Naruto vol. 1
...blue skims until she comes across..
1.Random ref. to American Culture...
Blue then continues skimming, slightly peeved, until she comes across Naruto's first Kage Bunshin no Jutsu but instead sees...

2."The Art of the Doppelganger"

Nani??blink.gif blink.gif blink.gif dry.gif dry.gif mad.gif mad.gif
[blue promptly exits store, swearing never to touch Viz again...]

Proceeds to kinokuniya to load up on FMAvolumes, and buys a HUGE Japanese Kanji dictionary.
Fresh_Coffee
They buthered Naruto that's for sure. Why can't they just leave it as it is?
hagane_no_tokage
because they're meddling, money-grubbing bastards who figure if they dumb it down enough to sell the series to 10-year-olds who can whine and cry and throw temper tantrums in the bookstore until mummy and daddy buy it for them to shut them up...then why not destroy a beautiful artform that isn't intended for america's spoiled, monetarily overindulged, poor little selfish latchkey rich kids? dry.gif

[/bitter rant]

are u there

lol.. yeah.. if they hire the online translator for the scanlation, and lower the comic price to $4-5 per book...
I'll spend all my money buying manga. heh heh..
Thanks for the manga btw, love them much.

*sigh* Viz should really hire translator from the fans (the one who translate for scanlation)
