Slashrose1010
Everyone knows the more popular animes like DBZ and Gundam, but which anime do you think is under-rated? I think Yu*Yu*Hakusho is one of them. The plot is pretty damn good and has kind of a different style of drawing. And come on, Kurama kicks ass.
LordGohan
Kuramma! hahahahahaha!

ehm,sorry couldnt stop laughing!

Yu-Yu definatly is not underated.
Des
I think Puchi Puri Yuushi is an under-rated anime.

>DDD NONE OF YOU KNOW WHAT IT IS!
Mr Badguy
wow, you're right. i don't.
Slashrose1010
Lord Gohan, What's So funny about Kuramma? You like Heie or something? And I think compared to a lot of other animes it is. It isn't as appreciated as much as Bebop or Inuyasha. Trigun isn't mentioned a lot either.
Blade42
I was mr badguy, I really don't think that YYH is under rated though, cause it gets talked about plenty, or at least as much as it needs to be talked about.
Cloud28
Yu Yu Hakusho is underrated?? i didn't know that..Gundam X was underated for sure..its acutally a pretty good series..laugh.gif
Slashrose1010
Blade your Avatar guy looks familiar, anyways. I think it has a pretty good plot. Especially this seasons. It strays away from the tournaments and he gets to fight another Spirit Detective. It doesn't really ahve such a clean appearnce either. The drawings are rough around the edges unlike shows like Trigun or FMA. (not that i don't like them) I wish more animes were shown to America per year (and kiddy ones like Pokemon don't count). We only get a few adult ones every year, what's up with that?
Slashrose1010
Excuse me, what was i saying? Trigun has that gritty kind of look to it too! That's why i love it wink.gif And the plot is excellent.
Blade42
My avatar...It's from Guilty Gear....Sol Badguy...
Slashrose1010
Oh yeah. I knew i knew that face. There is a new game out for that isn't there? I heard it was good.
Cloud28
Detective Conan was also so underrated in North America, although its very popular in Japan and Europe..

Guilty Gear Isuka? If you mean that game, it's good.

Detective Conan was under rated.
Cloud28
Sprial was under rated as well..and it has one of the best opening songs i have ever heard...(of course no one beats blach opening) laugh.gif
Slashrose1010
Yeah, i know. I could figure a few of them out. It was kinda corny how he turned into a kid though. Yeah, I did mean that game. I heard some good reviews for it. Not to sound like a total newb but how do you get a higher rating? Do you get it by how many posts you do??
Cloud28
what do u mean by a high rating? like a higher level on the forum like alchemist, state alchemist?? if thats ur case, it depends on ur posts, 50 = apprentice , 100=alchemist, 200= state alchemist, and then so on...(hey look its my 500th post!!!)
Slashrose1010
Ok, Thanks a bunch. I'm not used to this whole forum thingy yet.
Kihaku
Under-rated? um.. what is exactly meant by that. What I understand by it is how people generally consider the standard of the show... but others seem to be talking about popularity.
Like DBZ for example..That is(or was) fairly popular, but doesn't seem to be very appreciated. tongue.gif
Hmm... what I'd like to anyway add is Digimon(yeah tongue.gif ). I suppose it's quite popular among younger kids, but older people tend to just think of it as "another Pokémon" which it is not. It has a really great story and great characters and with a few childish aspects put aside even older kids can enjoy it(yeah..I'm an example tongue.gif ).

i have to think 'case closed' was underrated because the dubbing was really awful. *ducks* i know some people are hardcore dub supporters, but come on, that one was almost as bad as cardcaptors and sailor moon as far as dubs go. the only thing that didn't suck about the amercian version was that the kid who played conan actually did a good job... but all the others were just...well... really bad.

cloud i gotta agree with you on the spiral opening. that was so cool... i love that song, i wish i could find karaoke for it, it'd be a blast. i wish the anime had been more like the manga, tho...

and YES! kihaku digimon is sooo much better than pokemon! but i stopped watching it after season 2, it just wasn't the same anymore without Tai. Tai was the best.

i would like to place my vote for "the irresponsible captain tylor". it's pretty old, and not a lot of people even seem to know what it *is*, but it's so great. it's got comedy and action and...comedy... heh, and some great cheesy eighties music! whoo hoo! plus the ending song/sequence rocks, i love it. anybody seen it?
Kitoky
Ahh!!! Wolf's Rain I think is underrated, I think it has a VERY interesting plot and it's not one of those animes where the ending is "happily ever after" . Though it does make you think and it's sad U.U
Kihaku
tokage: i'm so glad you agree with me! biggrin.gif I actually meant only season 1 &2 because I haven't seen he others...(Yup, Taichi rocks! biggrin.gif and I also prefer season 1 to season 2...)

Kitoky: That's true. It has a great story, but it's probably something that people aren't easily obsessed about and many don't like slow paced plots..
Kitoky
True, it is a bit slow paced isn't it *taps chin*
telepika
I think every anime is underated. Think about it. No matter how good an anime is, it will never become as popular as shows like Survivor and CSI. Think of FMA. It deserves to be great and worshipped the world throughout right? But in America at least, the best that FMA can do is be the most popular show in Adult Swim History and maybe appear in a few magazines so that the larger populace hears of it like what happened with DBZ. There's this barrier of popularity that animated shows can never cross. Think of the larger population. It makes me angry that to them FMA will forever be considered a kid's show.
Slashrose1010
I COMPLETELY agree with you Telepika. Anime doesn't get nearly as much respect as it should. I put some blame on shows like POkemon. Everyone assumes ALL animes are like that, how wrong they are. A lot of animes and mangas are a lot better than all this "Reality" crap that the American media shovels in our face.
xrninja
i think pokemon is under-rated.

*ducks flying tomatoes*
Slashrose1010
LOL, how? it is about these little "creatures" that can only say their own names with repetitive attacks and battle strategies. They also evolve with experience in a matter of moments. Yu-Gi-Oh and Digimon were better than Pokemon.
xrninja
it's a matter of opinion. many people don't give pokemon a chance just because majority of people older than 13 bash it to death. *shrug*

I liked Pokémon back when I was that age, too. tongue.gif But now when I watch a little again when I'm back at my mother's place, I get lost. Where the heck did Misty go?
Slashrose1010
I've actually watched a few seasons from like 9-12 I guess, and your right. Older people do tend not to like it cuz it is for kids. But, I do think it's kinda corny and repetitive. Many people say Inuyasha is, which it is, but poeple here bash it a lot more than Pokemon.

i missed the beginning of that particular episode, but i believe her sisters won a trip around the world or something so she had to go back and run the cerulean gym. and then later on may and her brother max join ash and brock. i still get up on saturday mornings to watch the new eps, but WB20 has been playing 2 new ones, one at 8 and one at 9, and i keep sleeping through the 8:00 ones wacko.gif

inuyasha....it really was repetitive, but i don't think it was a bad series. at least, i don't think the raw and sub were bad. the dub, on the other hand, makes my ears want to cry.
Slashrose1010
Yeah, I saw some of that too. Now, they don't even have Brock anymore do they? He travels with that red clad chick. I dunno, haven't watched it about in like 3 or 4 years .
Quistis88
I actually liked having Misty in the group. Now the group just . . . lost most of its angst.
Slashrose1010
I know it's not really an anime but it has some anime-ic characterists and a little anime-like drawings. I'm talking about Teen Titans on Crtoon Network. A great cartoon with an awesome villain, Slade. The plot is good, and there is plenty of angst with Raven around. My fave is Cyborg though. They do a lot of the anime comedy kinda stuff with the sweat drops, turning them into rag-doll looking thing, the flames hwen they're mad, the works. If you don't wathc it already check it out, it's a quality show worth watching.
telepika
I watched the first 10 episodes of Pokemon then stopped. The people were just too happy and enthusiastic for me. It was scary. I didn't even know Misty left. blink.gif

i like teen titans a lot, but the anime-like reactions with the big SD heads and sweatdrops and facefaults just seem sort of out-of-place in the show (especially if the SD heads are saying something and the mouths are way off with the dub voices tongue.gif). my friend is obsessed, and she's named us all after them. lucky me, i'm cyborg! i'm the only one the people i know who watch it who likes starfire and starfire/robin, though. terra is evil stuff. anyway, overall, i'd recommend it smile.gif

hey, i like starfire/robin! starfire rules, i love how she talks all funny and always makes reference to her weird native food/customs/traditions/etc. she cracks me up. heh, plus she;s a snappy dresser. not many people can pull off purple thigh-high boots, you know?

raven is kinda neat, too, but i agree that terra is uh...evil. like eee-vil. tho i will admit, i did highly enjoy the play on words with her name. i was chortling about that for like...ten minutes after they first introduced her powers. even so...i haven't even watched a lot of eps with her, but i get a major not-nice vibe from her. how dare she toy with poor sweet tofu-loving beast boy's emotions. hidoi janai no?!

Oh yes! Anime in genral is underrated! I guess it's also because it's "a cartoon" that makes it seem for a younger audience. It really bugs me when people just think I'm a freak, say that anime is for kids(for example my mother... *gets angry*) or just diss it, because they think Pokémon and DBZ are the only examples and they just didn't happen to like them. That is, if they even know the concept of anime, even if they don't they still have those opinions(exactly, without even knowing what the serieses are about). I hate it, when people don't give it even a chance... *grips lightning staff really tightly*
About Pokémon... The first season was good.. at least I liked it, but I think the plot just became inexistent and recycled later on. They could have at least made up seperate plots(with possibly different characters) for each season or something...
hagane_no_tokage
oh i know, i HATE how most american people think that just because something is animated, it's automatically for kids... uh, i'm sorry... pokemon is for kids. cardcaptor sakura (while it does have deeper subplots an older audience could appreciate) is for kids. beyblade? yu-gi-oh! and monster rancher? sure, yah, kidstuff... some anime IS intended for a young audience...

but blood the last vampire? perfect blue? ghost in the shell? witch hunter robin? akira, X/1999, rahXephon and bleach?

definitely NOT for kids. just because it's animated does NOT make it a kiddy cartoon.

wake up, american people... most anime is to japan what cult-followed sci-fi/fantasy-style shows (x-files, lost, sliders, buffy the vampire slayer, etc) are to america. they are intended for mainly a (young) adult audience, and most are long series that require sort of a weekly commitment a child can't be expected to offer in order to understand a very complicated plotline.

they just *happen* to be animated...

maybe it's becasue (IMO) japanese *voice* acting tends to be better than live-acting? but just because it's animation doesn't make it kid stuff. ugh, i hate the way american liscencing cmpanies tone down the rough stuff so kids can watch it. it's like, helooooo, if it has nudity or violence or cursing in it...MAYBE IT'S NOT FOR KIDS!? uhm, duh? blink.gif

[/rant]
Kihaku
Also the Americans seem to have different ideas about what's suitable for kids. Shows like Yu-gi-oh!, One Piece and Digimon(yeah, even Digimon) get cut and censored.
I mean... is it really that bad to hide the truth of the world? It's more harmful to let kids see someone getting whacked without anything happening(yeah, censor all the blood) or hide issues, that they confront anyway, so it will be a bigger shock in the future??

Oh, and even if some shows are meant for kids, I don't see what the big deal is with adults enjoying them too biggrin.gif . For example the main characters in Yu-gi-oh! are older.. which would also kind of make it an "older kids show"... Oh, well I often judge by that tongue.gif . I can't understand anyway, what's so embarrassing about watching something "kiddie". In my opinion children's shows have many great themes, that too serious and narrow-minded adults could learn from.

actually pokemon is underated and no..don't ever go for animerican dubbed and censored animes..please >W<..the original pokemon is far more badss and slightly adult in nature sublimaly (the opening song already had one part mentioning looking underneath a girl skirt, even the american crappy song had that animated scene but they quickly snipped it through >W<)...not too mentioning some episodes that were shown in japan were snipped off from american dubbed because of adult content..ha ha the beach episode rocksss >W<

..the movies of pokemon were way better (in jap that is), the first movie..mind blowing..and what a badss boss by the Mewtwo..

some of the video game made into movies were good like the street fighter one(the ultra mature R rated one with >W<...) and even the fatal fury anime movies were good, not to mention several 80s punk, sci fi action based animes (esp the sci fi and super robot ones) were ultra badss in storyline, despite the fact the animation wasn't top notched, content wise it was the best probably..better a lot of dumb eye candy animations nowadays @___@ just look at shows like Macross series and the Original gundam series(not the new seed one, that was toooooo hyped please)

...i even think that monster rancher english version is also another sleeper hit to me, according to english anime standards >W<...

ha ha that reminds me a lot of these video game called dead or alive 2, the american version had english dubbing for the fighters and boy were they damn lame but hilariously dumb quotes like "I won't have any mercy for ya..even for beginner!" or "I'm coming! <- thats it lame man rolleyes.gif " or even "did ya wait long", "you going to die!" and many more one liners.... rolleyes.gif

Most underrated of all current series: Monster. No question.

If you look at the description for FMA on the American dub, it says "Animation/Children." mad.gif It's horrible how anime is either kid's stuff or porn!!!

My mom is ok. She doesn't bother me about watching anime. She watched Yu Gi Oh! with us and now she's obsessed with Inuyasha. I think she's starting to like FMA, but EVERYONE ELSE!!!!! mad.gif mad.gif mad.gif My cousin is one of those people. She thinks this is just a phase of my life and I should wise up and mature soon. I was watching FMA once during a family gathering then my aunt brings my baby cousin to watch the "Nice cute cartoon." She's then horrified after seeing one of the battle sequences and says "This is what they show kids these days!" mad.gif mad.gif mad.gif

I'm glad that anime's becoming more mainstream. Even though we have to deal with the newbies and over-obsessed fangirls, at least one day in the future anime will have the respect it deserves!!!

Witch Hunter Robin?

Mind you, I haven't see many episodes, just one but I never hear many people talking about it.

FMA... for children? Say... what???
Lucky you, telepika! If my Mum even hears a title of an anime mentioned she tells me to grow up. And of course she has no idea what the whole thing is about(I argue a lot with her about that, but usually ends with her giving up, because she doesn't understand anyway). My friends accept my anime obsession as an eccentric part of me, my brother says he hates anime, but he happens to like a few...
I really hope people would change their minds about certain issues...

I totally agree with you. Taht is bull how on the english versions they censor things. Like in the episode of Yu-Gi-Oh when Bandit Keith lost to Wheeler. Bandit keith jumped up to where Pegusus was and had his hand in a position with his hand on a trigger, but there was no gun!!! This is so stupid because kids here can watch a commercial with chicks in underwear and cars getting blown up and stuff but they can't show a gun? That is stupid how people assume it's a kids show just because it's animated. My friends are like that and don't understand how anime is an ART!

Poor Kihaku... sad.gif At least here in the U.S., anime's a bit more mainstream rather than in Finland...

@Tokage: That's better than in Kenshin where Usui is magically sticking to a wall (They took out the sword that pinned him there) or when Saito's jacket magically disappears.
