I'm going to 3rd year of High School this autumn.
(I'm 18 and live in Finland, so I guess it's different from high school in the US. )
3rd year is normally supposed to be the last one, but since I switched to night school, and it's going to take longer than normal dayschool.. I'm prepared to have another 2 extra study years.. or so. >_>

Sophomore year means 10th grade, or the second year of high school

First year of high school in the US would mean 9th grade, or freshman year. Unless you (wherever you are) have different years for high school...

In the UK (which is where I'm assuming Illuminating Darkness is from), you start Primary School at 4/5 depending on where your birthday lands in the school year. Primary goes Reception>Year 1>Year 2 etc all the way to Year 6 by which time you're about 11. Then you start Secondary/High School, which lasts for 5 years until you're 15/16 (last year of high school is caled Year 11, which is when we stop numbering years).
Then you start at college (if you want to go, it optional but free

) which is (I'm assuming) similar to the last two years of an American High School. Some schools give a choice of staying for another year, which is called 6th form or Year 12.
Then you go on to University (not free

) which is what most Americans seem to call College.
As far as the topics question goes, I'm 19, and would be in my 2nd year of University/College if I'd gone

yep, confused the hell out of me when I first started watching a lot of American movies/TV shows. I be like "He's 18 and still in high school? The foosh?" I still don't have my head round the American education system. Isn't there like 3 types of high school BEFORE you go to (your) college?
hand-made-city
Oct 8 2009, 04:40 PM
Hmm, not three types of high school. It basically goes like this:
pre-school/kindergarten
Elementary school (grades 1-6)
Middle school or Jr. High in some districts (grades 7-8)
High school (grades 9-12)
College (4 more years)
I graduated from high school when I was 17, but a lot of people in my class were 18 at the time (I was one of the younger ones...

hand-made-city's got it mostly right, and I don't mean to burst your bubble but it really varies with different states and cities and even school districts. Where I used to live before I moved, we had elementary as grades 1-5, middle 6-7, junior high 8-9, and high school 10-12. It was a screwed up school system, tbh XD The standard is for high school to be your last 4 years, then go off to college if you choose to
hand-made-city
Oct 8 2009, 05:41 PM
Yeah, it really does depend on where you live... but that seemed like the most basic format of how the school systems in America are set up. My town had grades 5 and 6 as middle school, rather than elementary school, actually. But that only changed when I was in 4th grade, so it wasn't always like that. As a result, I wound up going to a different school for one year, and then going back to my old school for the next two years! So ridiculous!

Yeah, it's funny how our systems differ. xD I'm 17 (and from the UK) and I'm in college in what is known as "upper 6" or "Year 13." I'm applying for university now though. @_@

Yup, except now education in the UK is compulsory until you're 18. Which means you don't have a choice. Ahahah.
Gah, the US system is confusing, but at least not as confusing as the UK's use of 'public' 'state' 'private' etc schools. 'Public' schools in the UK mean private- not public... and then there's 'State' or 'Government' or whatever for normal schools. Then there are faith schools and grammar schools and blahblahblah. Oh, and applications for colleges are murder.

I am eighteen, and in my first semester of University.
"College" and "University" are synonymous by connotation, but technically, a "college" is a part of a whole; within a University, [commonly state schools and / or the larger schools with a variety of degrees granted] there are separate colleges dedicated to a specific degree program, or a cluster of related subjects. Por ejemplo, the "College of Fine Arts", "College of Communication [where I am]", " . . . Mathematics", et cetera. Within that university there are departments and colleges underneath it; they are, and should be distinguished, because you can apply not only to the overhead university, but the specific college within it as well.
Also, "colleges" tend to refer to smaller, more specialized schools that, while still considered and may be named as a "university".
This is regarding the US system, by the way.
