GRRRRRRR!!! Ninja, Tokage, Queenie and Hitokiri!!! I know this was posted long ago but you got to support the dub!!! It's how you repay the makers of FMA after watching the subs. At least turn on the TV when FMA's on and not watch it so FMA's ratings go up... Please. *Sigh* I'm sorry guys. Do whatever you want. I'm just a Funimation lover and a dub supporter. Ignore me. biggrin.gif

sorry, as wonderful of a job they did with the japanese hagaren, i'll never forgive BONES for selling hagaren to funi and the US. i just don't like dubbed anime, period. i don't like hearing english come out of ed's mouth when i feel the only voice that belongs there is paku romi's. it's very nice for those who don't have access to the subs/aren't morally corrupt and dLing them illegally, because now they can watch the hagaren dub, but hey, i'm a selfish elitist and i plainly admit it. i'm supporting the japanese makers by buying japanese merchandise anyway, and if i ever find the dvd's (because they have that sub option, right?) i'll get those.

Hmmm.... Yeah here's a link to Funimations FMA site. I thought it was interesting that that they had a new section that was updated every once in a while. How cute they even tell you to bring a hanky to episode 7. Funimation

I watched episode 7 on Adult Swim and I liked it. Except for the Generals voice I guess they figured that

If you can't stand any dub at all... why watch any dub at all? I got no problem if you never like dubs in any sense, fine. But to watch it and say "That's English, he shouldn't speak English!" for 1/2 an hour straight is just plain stupid. Either watch and don't complain or don't watch period. The only type of complaining I can take from people who watch the dub are people complaining about one voice sounding a little off and that's it (such as maybe "Roy didn't sound right." once, not 200 times, but once or twice and that's it).

I also get annoyed of the people who overexagerrate thse kind of things. "ROY SOUNDS LIKE A STRANGER WHO'D GO UP TO LITTLE KIDS AND SAY SOMETHING LIKE 'HEY, GOT CANDY, WANNA COME WITH ME?' THEN DO STUFF TO THEM, HE SHOULDN'T SOUND LIKE THAT!" He didn't sound like that, you (the person I'm paraphrasing) made that connection, and don't ask me how you know exactly what a guy like that sounds like in the first place (ba-dum-ching)

Fine, he didn't sound quite right, but he hardly sounds like some pedophile pervert... seeing as how anybody can be a pedophile pervert, any voice could "sound like a pedophile pervert." That was just an annoying argument. Almost like someone going up to someone from Honduras and saying "You look Cuban!" (loook up comedian Carlos Mencia) but I'm going off-topic here... I think you guys get the idea.

Arguing against the dub is just stupid, either watch it and don't complain, don't watch it and don't overexagerrate, or watch it and make reasonable complaints once in a while.

i'm not going to quote the post because it's rather long and bolded and green, but this is @ vegita625:

i watched a few episodes of the dub in hopes that maybe i'd see something i'd like and that would maybe change my opinion of the dub. and i watched more than one episode so i wouldn't jump to conclusions too early. and i just really, really didn't like it. i know that i'm biased when i say this. i liked a few voices and i think the VAs are doing okay (with the exception of aaron dismuke, for some reason i can't stand his voice at all), but i really didn't like some of the translations. some of the lines they changed for ed in the lior episodes made him sound like a cocky brat, and he really isn't, for example. and general haruko? was there even a point to changing his last name to a japanese girl's name? stuff like that. far from monumental annoyances, but they just kept getting at me. i'm a nit-picky person.

for me, paku romi is ed. the feeling when i watched the dub would be like the feeling i'd have if my sister was talking and someone else's voice was coming out instead. listening to vic minogna (sp? @__@;; )'s voice coming out of ed's mouth is just too weird for me and i don't think it's something i'll ever get used to or like. i'm not going to stop watching the dub all together; i'm going to watch 13, 15, 25, 37, a few others and the end of the series, to see if maybe the VAs evolve with the characters and to see how well they're doing with the series. i have a feeling that the chances of a tractor crashing through my window are higher than me becoming a dub fan, though. it's personal preference. i also have a vendetta against "americanizing" things, dubs, food products, and american versions of foreign movies included. but that's a long rant i only subject my friends and lj-readers to.

i'm also rather pissed at funimation right now because i just found out that the contract they made with BONES allows them legal right over anything FMA, which means i can't download the raw, untranslated manga to read (since viz licensed the manga, God damn it all) and i'm technically not allowed to make any more FMA tshirts. it's like a fricking monopoly. but anyway...

as to your last comment, i feel like those of us who watched the japanese version have just as much of a right to criticize the dub and give our opinions on it as all of the dub fans do. we get our heads bitten off very quickly and sometimes unfairly whenever we say anything critical of the dub, because we're just "bashing" it. we're not "arguing against it" necessarily, but many times when we criticize it, that's the conclusion dub fans jump to and then we get bitched at to "support the dub!" we didn't applaud every aspect of the japanese version just because it was the japanese version, and i see no reason why we have to keep our mouths shut when it comes to the dub.

dry.gif Hey, what's wrong with bolded green? tongue.gif

Anyway, I've watched the sub and I'm not saying either was better, either was worse, nor that you have no right to dislike and talk against and criticize whatever. My point is I get annoyed of people critically dissing dubs just because they're dubs and overexagerrating their complaints. Critizing is different than just being like "dubs suck, FMA is doomed." Your preferences about Americanizing Japanese products makes sense and I can understand your point, but "not being able to forgive Bones"? He's increasing the fanbase and chose a good dub company to do it. It's basically inevitable, any good anime's likely to come to America nowadays with the popularity of anime increasing in the US. Hell, even Naruto's planned to come to the US around 2006 (if I hear right), and that's worse to Americanize (being based on shinobi and Japanese background-type stuff) than FMA (not stressing any national characteristics, therefore not really being linked to Japan like Kenshin or Naruto). I'm just glad Bones didn't choose someone like 4Kids or someone equally as bad.

I know others are, but I'm not telling you (nor others) "shut up, you have no right to dis the dub!" Far from it, I'll dis the dub if I feel it has reason to be dissed, but more in a critical way and a lil more from a 3rd party view than a "I love the original Japanese, you're fakers" point of view. I respect people who are able to criticize something calmly as opposed to a dumb-sounding "You suck because I like the original." I'm sure you have your reasons for disliking Americanization (if it wasn't a word, now it is lol), and you're not being as stupid as some people (refer to my last post including the overexagerrations), so I'm not arguing against you, just basically getting out how I feel about the whole dub vs. sub thing in general. I'm also not attached to any specific voices at all, so while I understand your point of a different voice, I don't feel the same way about it (heh, and with my sister's constantly yelling, nagging voice, I'd prefer a different voice every once in a while laugh.gif, yea, j/k)

(Also, my guess with the Hakuro vs. Haruko thing is [i]likely]/i] more of a typo-type thing that was carried to the end than having a real reason)

Apparently this was the Japanese studios fault, they told them accidently to prononuce it the wrong way. Though I don't have a direct quote of this, it seems to be true.

Well technically you aren't legally allowed to download manga even when it is unlicensed. Companies seem to turn a blind eye to this, but it is still illegal. Not that I am condeming you because I am upset that I might not be able to read the new chapters of the manga too and I am hoping someone will still translate the latest chapter of the manga even if this isn't technically "legal". But hey if you can read the raw stuff you can at least purhcase the manga, I can't even do this.

I personally like the dub, but from what I have heard of the sub and my general opinion of subs, I also expect the sub to be better. But I try not to compare subs to dubs anymore it is not worth it since the subs are always better. I still find the dub of FMA very enjoyable.

And I never thought Ed sounded cocky. But then again I do read the manga so I guess I had a preconceived notion of the character, and besides I love Ed. smile.gif

i'm glad the two of you are so level-headed smile.gif it's been too long since i had a calm dub-sub debate-of-sorts with someone. and i'd like to make another long response about the american fandom, but i really lack the energy. basically, you've met quite a few inuyasha fangirls here, right? some of us were appalled when it was licensed and we thought of those fans fangirling about hagaren. "OMG I LUVS INYUASHA [EDDY] HEZ DA CUTEST I WANNAHAV HIZ BABYS!!!1" of course that's not everyone, but the thought of even a few of them here was sort of like, "damn it, don't do that to FMA. it's too good of a series. please don't make it another inuyasha." i've seen both the sub and dubs of inuyasha and i have a soft spot for the japanese version, but i abhor the dub fandom. terrifying.

there are plenty of dub fans that respect hagaren and it's depth and plot, and i respect them and i'm glad that they've discovered hagaren. but there are so many previously previously mentioned fans that seem to care only about ed's sex appeal and shirtless scenes (actually, i don't know if any have been shown yet) that it's practically insulting to the series. so part of my grudge with Americanization (we'll make it a word wink.gif) is sometimes part of the aftermath it brings. which has nothing to do with the quality of the series but it's an annoying parasite that seems to cling to dubs and can be a turn-off. doesn't ring true for all dubs, but for most.

@ vegita (don't get me wrong, bolded and green is lovely laugh.gif ): what BONES did was a brilliant marketing move for them. but i won't forgive them for Americanizing (there is is again!) hagaren. i don't want to accept that all these anime series are going to be dubbed someday (denial!). my prediction is that the naruto dub would not be a good one. terrible butchering of names, first of all. naRUto. saKURah. kuhKAHshee. and how will they be able to do the "-dattebayo'"?? i always get really attached to seiyuu voices with their character and naruto is no exception. there are some things you really can't translate and should just be left alone. *sob* a-roacheemaROO.

@ kirara: how stupid of BONES. between BONES and funimation, shouldn't at least one person notice the error if half the fandom catches it right away? same thing with the Liza thing. blink.gif as for the manga, if i can still get dLs to the raws, i may scanlate them myself. tongue.gif how come you can't buy the manga? nowhere to buy from?

whoa, this turned out pretty long anyway. ph34r.gif

I was wondering the same thing about "'dattebayo." It's not really translatable, but it's a part of his character... maybe it'll be something in only the Jap. version? Maybe they'll just have him say "dattebayo" even though he's speaking English? I mean, does anyone else in any other anime say "dattebayo" at the end of sentences, or has Naruto been the only person in any Japanese cultural whatevers to say it constantly? If it's been used by someone else, maybe it can be translated to an English phrase said at the end of every sentence that makes no sense? Who knows?
Toby-Chan
Well, there are lots of little catch phrases that characters have in other series that have been translated.

Kenshin's Samurai Dialect version of 'desu', "De gozaru", is translated to english as "That it is", "That I am", etc. Since Kenshin has a very old fashioned, archaic speech, it kind of works with him. It separates him from everyone else, and shows that he has a sort of fancy old way of speaking.

I haven't seen the english dub of Fushigi Yuugi, but apparently, Chichiri's "No da" is translated as, "You know." It dosen't seem to work too well. I liked it when they just kept the "No da" in the manga.

"-tte ba" is used as an emphasis type of thing. "da" is just a casual form of "desu," and "yo" is used for more emphasis. so naruto says stuff like "nan dattebayo?!" and "ittebayo!" it doesn't have a specific translation and depending on the context it can emphasize a sentence in different ways. i've heard other characters uses "-tte ba" or "datte ba," but no one uses it "-ttebayo" or "dattebayo" nearly as often as naruto blink.gif it's a naruto-ism, pretty much, like how some characters say "desu" at the end of every sentence, whether it's grammatically correct or not. i can't really think of a way to translate '"dattebayo," because like i said....it's just there for extra extra emphasis. wacko.gif maybe they just won't put it in, which is what the manga scanlators do. it's a part of his character, but there really isn't a way to put it in english.

@ toby-chan: i've always thought "that it is" was an odd translation for "de gozaru." reminds me of yoda. laugh.gif
