Last I checked: male.
I've never really thought about this, but thinking back on it; people I've talked to, fansites, ZOMGFTA, all kinds, are all mostly female folk.
Hell, I was surprised the manga was written by a woman.
I blame the RoyxRiza people. That seems to be fangirl bait.

Not very likely, there are guys who root for that pairing as well. In my experience here, most of the girls I met are either ok with or entirely in love with shounen-ai/yaoi. The fact that FMA has so many male characters and very little female (In comparison) is probably the reason why there are so many girls instead of boys here . . . It's a yaoi gold mine!

I'm a guy and I'm rather fond of the pairing (see avatar).
Most of the people that make up my family (especially on my mom's side whom I'm closer too) are women so I've grown accustomed to their likes/dislikes as well as them telling me on how to/not to treat a woman (yes, I'm straight. We good?).
As for the whole RoyxRiza pairing, it has aspects that remind me of Mulder & Scully from the X-Files - two people who are professional, but care very much for the other without crossing the line into a clichéd romance (despite the fact that they do fall in love - but that's not until far later into the series). I'm more fond of a romance like that rather than one that's based on obsessive tendencies.
I'm quite comfortable admitting that (no need to hide behind some macho manly-mask, we're all friends here) and I couldn't care less if some people think it's weird.

Well, I said "Most of the girls I met" not "All" . . . You are one of the few who don't enjoy yaoi/shounen ai. And I also didn't say that was the sole reason why the girls I met read FMA. (Though I didn't make it clear that I didn't think that was the reason, I apologize.)

This seems quite plausible. I think a similar thing happened with Kenshin.

Although weirdly enough when I saw your avatar I did automatically assume you were female. >_<

No worries on both ends, I could see that being implied a mile away.
The thing with the avatars though is that most people hide behind them and I could've said the same thing about your avatar but I'm also someone who never assumes anything unless it's admitted. (This avatar gets me in good standing with the RoyxRiza fangirls though

)
But yeah, I'd go out on a limb and say that the most vocal fans - regarding anything that has a potential to have pairings - will be mostly female. At the same time though, when enough fans can congregate in one area, it's easier to see the breakdown of the male/female ratio regarding a pairing but that's the thing - there will always be male fans, just in smaller numbers.
I'd say that the beauty of series-specific sites, as well as conventions or group meetings, is that all fans can get together and just talk about everything and anything.

I've never liked the whole shounen/shoujo thing. I've never seen an anime or manga that has entirely girls or entirely boys, it's always a mix. So saying this manga is made for girls is a bit stupid because there's going to be a boy that likes it, and because of the title of shoujo they might be worried to admit it. (Though the same can't be said for the girls, no one really looks down on girls for liking "things for boys".)
Sorry, probably bored you with a rant. >.<

(Yay! My first post in this thread!) cough
I myself am a girl, but people who know me personally, when confronted, would immediately classify me as a tomboy. Contrary to
Kale's life-story, I'm a girl who grew up with a bunch of guys.. (and my mom, but c'mon... you know what I mean). That being said, I tend to lean more towards guy type stuff- like sports, clothing trends, video games, etc., etc. This of course includes shounen anime and/or manga. I absolutely _despise_ shoujo, yaoi, and all that not jazz. I'm not trying to disprove your theory
Mercy Alchemist- in fact, I think it's very plausible since I myself know so many crazy (that's an understatement, by the way) anime fans who fit that sterotype. I'm just trying to state I'm an exception to that.

Add another mark for the female part, because I'm female ^^
Although...many people [both online and offline] think I'm a guy. Online people think this due to how I act, which isn't usually how a girl would probably act. You know...vocal about stuff, tough, etc. Or if the site doesn't have a gender option to show what I am, they think I'm male.
As for offline, I have short hair [like...short. Well it's growing out now but still, it's short] and wear baggy shirts that don't really show that I am in fact female.
Also...I don't fit under the stereotype of being a female anime fan that just loves shojo. I love shojo, yes, but I also love shonen as well. [As well as yaoi, but also yuri as well. I can't discriminate really.]
