im really gettin madder(is tha a word) that parctically all animes dont follow the manga.ive noticed in fma and was wonderin y do they hve 2 change it?!

It's because the anime is faster than the manga. After the anime and manga have reached the same point, the anime has to make up something, because they can't wait for the manga.

I don't understand what you are talking about... They can't fit 2-3 volumes in one episode, it would be way too rushed. And some people don't read the manga, the anime has to have an ending. If it just ended with no real ending, that would be very retarded, like you said. And most of the time, animes have a precise number of episode (like for FMA it was 51), and they have to make material for it if they don't have enough in the manga.

I think the anime follows the manga quite well. It's almost impossible to follow it exactly, anime is moving, things go by faster than in manga, so some characters are cut out, events brought together, but all in all, I really think FMA is one of the best adapted animes I've ever seen.

Comparing FMA to, for example, YuGiOh, which has been changed an censored like hell, what made characters lose depth.

Not even talking about live action movies, like Harry Potter. The less time you've got, the more you can't show/explain properly, so it ends up cut out.

i both like and dislike the way anime and manga are different... i like it for the way quistis mentioned...it is like getting to hear two versions of the same story... and i do understand that once the anime catches up to the manga...well, they have to do something... but, at the same time, it seems kind of dumb to me to start animating a series in which the story has only been halfway completed, and just sort of pull out of a hat the parts that need to be filled.

like, for example... most of takahashi rumiko's works (maison ikkoku and inuyasha in particular) stuck very closely to the manga throughout most of the anime... some things were done out of order, and there were a handful of filler episodes that they threw in to make up some time (and i was pissed off that they ended the anime so abruptly when the manga was actually coming around the home bend.)... but, for the most part, manga and anime were almost identical, and it was really neat to see the still images from the manga panels in motion. and seeing the original episodes they made up for filler time was also entertaining for the most part.

there are some times, however, when the anime is so loosely based on manga that it can barely be called the same story...and that is what irritates me. kamikaze kaitou jeanne, for example...followed the same basic storyline here and there, but 70% of the anime was filler that was not in the manga at all, and the ending was completely different. same with magic knight rayearth and chobits. same basic idea, but a completely different way to get to an almost completely different ending than the authors originally intended. samurai deeper kyo, too... those are the times when it bothers me.

FMA has run relatively parallel to the manga...but there are still many things i fear we will never get to see in motion, being that the story still has another three years ahead of it, and i think that is a shame. the animation is so beautiful...i would really like to see some OVA's or something released with animation of the manga chapters that were skipped over...

I actually love these kinds of deviations. Example: Episode 51 of Hagaren hasn't happened in the manga. And hopefully it won't. XD Whereas the, uh....Lieutenant Ross storyline...thing...never happened in the anime. And so on. Each has its quirks.

i agree. part of what's so interesting about the FMA series is that the manga and anime deviate so much. they generally stick to the same facts, but everything inbetween isn't necessarily the same. a lot of scenes that couldn't fit in the anime are in the manga, too. the manga's got its own good points, and so does the anime. the manga was also there for us when the series ended, and will let us see how FMA will finish in a sort of alternate ending. there are a lot of characters, countries, etc that are in the manga that couldn't fit in the anime. i think that if they tried to stick ling & co in the anime, it would have dragged out for too long anyway. the thing with anime and manga series being so much alike are that when one is ahead of the other, you get impatient for the other one. like for naruto, i've read up to chapter 240, but the anime's only at 140 or so, and i'm losing interest and getting impatient with a great anime.....same thing with bleach and yakitate!! japan, seeing as i already know how future arcs will work out. for fma, we had no idea what was going to happen next because the manga was different, and in that sense FMA as a series was really satisfying.

*gags* i found the ending of the anime EXTREMELY unsatisfying. if the manga ends that way too, i may have to invade a small country and conquer it with my army of hamsters.

i think that they should just increase the lengths of the episodes. instead of a half hour why not an hour or something

because then it would take even longer to produce each episode. in my opinion, at 51 episodes hagaren is an appropriate length. it never really got old, like i predict naruto will be in the future.

u need an anime to merchandise to the kiddies who love fast furious, eye candy action scenes..cause manga is more for the storytelling goodies >W<

In a way I like it when the manga and the anime are at least a little bit different. For example I was reading the InuYasha manga and watching the anime and at one point I was just a little ahead in the anime then I was in the manga and I started wondering what the point was in reading the manga because the anime sticks so close at parts and it was getting really boring reading what I just saw so i stopped reading it. Sometimes I also like seeing different endings because if I don't like the way one ended maybe I'll like the way the other one ended better Sometimes though they do cut some of my favorite things or things I think are important out of the anime and that bugs me, heck sometimes they completely change it and I really hate it when an anime of a manga I love isn't that great...but I'll probably end up watching it anyway.

What's the point of seeing the anime if everything's the same as the manga? I mean, you'd know NO suspense, you'd know NO surprise, you'd know NOTHING that hasn't been told by the manga. In fact you'd know NO complusion to keep watching. The reason why people want to see the next episode of a series / anime episode is because they want to know what happens next. Same goes for comic books (you notice each manga volume almost always ends with a cliffhanger to keep you buying the stuff). It's that anticipation that creates the hype. I wouldn't be surprised if a good lot of viewers would just get dead bored of just seeing what's been drawn out in the manga simply moving and talking on screen.

Manga can be looked back, read and referred to again or STARED at for a long time if you miss out any small, important details. Anime, on the other hand, is a medium that just flows. Unless viewers tape the whole thing down and watch it over again, the producers HAVE to change things, and make the story easier to understand at a glance, or just lose the audience.

Furthermore, the way manga is done; frames, cuts and angles, CANNOT be directly brought over to the TV medium without editing a lot of things. Remember, it's a different medium altogether, plus each anime episode is only about 22 minutes long.

Well.... actually I like the anime and manga to be the same. I don't mind minor changes because they liven up the story and show aspects that haven't been shown before. Filler episodes give a chance to experience new things with the favourite characters. I don't mind either if the story is a little diffrent. With FMA it proved to be great! I absolutely loved it! With Rurouni Kenshin however... I don't know the original one, but I didn't really fancy the anime version.

I actually don't mind knowing what happens next. While I was watching One Piece (having read the manga) I actually was in suspense "now.... this will happen, or?" kind. Even now when I'm ahead of my manga reading I still don't mind going back to the same events. I actually love reading them! If a series is great I don't think it matters if the anime and manga are the same. Sometimes I don't have the possibility to watch and read both anime and manga. So I'm happy to know at least one of them. If they're different I'm feel like I'm missing something if I see just one of the versions. I also can't own both (usually it's the manga ) especially if they're long... I'm just not that rich (I don't get to see anime on TV).

In some cases, I think the Anime is actually better than the manga. Example? Rurouni Kenshin. The manga was rather wordy and I don't really liked the art much. The anime, on the other hand, progresses faster and was less wordy and the art was better too.

I was actually miffed if the Anime didn't follow the manga but after reading, I realized that yes, it would be really boring if the Anime follows the manga too much. However, different storyline in Manga and Anime would really confuse some people, especially newbies, on which storyline to follow. I usually refer to the manga for Canon but I know there's some people who follow both and sometimes, the Anime and Manga is contradictory.

I agree with everyone! I actually prefer anime to manga, but there are some exceptions. The only thing I don't like about anime's, arethe endings. Some of them ar just awful. For example, I just finished watching Samurai Deeper Kyo, and the ending was probably the worst I've in a long time. Now I'm starting to read the manga, and it's pretty different from the anime, but I still like it the same. Like Ryan 227 said, if you don't like how the anime ended, it might end better with the manga. I hope so, because SDK was too good of a story to end like that!

Hmmm, I personally like manga better, just because it is straight from the author, not mixed up or watered down to make it more "audience friendly" and mass-market. I wish mangas would stay more true to the manga, but I can see why that could be hard. Still, anime just doesn't measure up to the beauty of manga.

It kind of should matter if there are few big differences, which are often caused by: stupid dubbers!

For example: about 1997, I got into Sailor Moon and I was about 10 or so. I bought the manga and it turned out that the oh-so-very-smart people who dubbed it decided to turn the anime kiddy but keep the manga for teenagers! O_O;; It took me a while to figure out about the whole shoujo-ai, incest, suicide, and cross dressing thing.

Well, anime is an adaptation of the manga sort of speak, so it's only normal when it takes a different turn. But I must admit that I like it when the storyline stays the same with a couple of different twists and turns....That's why I think that the FMA anime should have stuck to the manga on a closer level because I just think that the storyline is much better in the manga than in the anime....I like to see some scenes I enjoyed in the original manga of a series being animated with the actors and backround music, it gives it a whole new perspective and when some crucial scenes are cut, I'm kinda dissapointed.

I agree with Electrastar. Almost 99.9% of the time I prefer Anime that actually sticks to the manga, with added bonuses here and there. If they decide to make them different, then you would think they would at least make the changes improve the story and not nearly destroy it ( I've seen that happen in many cases, one of the worst being the Record of the Lodoss Wars). But unfortunitly, they don't always bother to improve the story, and instead try to make it is far from the manga as possible ( which is rarely a good thing), mean while creating some god-awful Anime. Fullmetal Alchemist Anime, though not at all bad, could have had a much better story line if it had stuck more with the Manga, which posseses one of the best stories I've yet to lay eyes on. Though the Anime had a few good episodes that where not in the manga ( as of yet, anyway), most of the better episodes stuck more closely to the original manga.

Generally I like when an anime sticks to the manga. True it is just seeing the same story twice but I mainly enjoy an anime for its music and voice acting. Also many times I will end up seeing the anime first since that seems to be what is released in the US first, so if it follows the manga exactly from start to finish I usually don't bother to read the manga. It is the stories that end abruptly in the anime but continue in the manga that I usually read the manga for (Inuyasha, Fruits Baskets, Kenshin and Kare Kano are all perfect examples). If you want to see the real story not some filler or abrupt ending then you have to read the manga.

FMA is a special case because really the anime is just an alternative version of the manga. I knew this before watching and wasn't sure if I would like it since I did really like the manga but the anime still turned out well. So now I love both the FMA manga and anime. And as others have said it is nice to get too enjoyable stories. If other anime series can make an alternative story as good as Fullmetal Alchemist than this would certainly solve the problem of all these abrupt endings that we often get in anime.

of course 99% of the time the manga is better than the anime (that 1% is mai-hime ), but tv companies have schedules and seasons that anime series have to abide, so unless its a series like PoT, Naruto, or Bleach, most of them have a defined number of episodes, and the animators have to somehow work with the storyline and create something that works in the given episode count. manga artists are given much more freedom, because they can continue writing till they get bored.

Most anime are based upon a manga. However they are exceptions such as Wolf's Rain and Escaflowne. The only thing that bugs me about anime is how some characters are protrayed. For example, take Fruits Basket. One problem with this anime is the the fact that the manga is still printing. Up the chapter 113 now.

Shigure is protrayed as the ever so sing-song guy in the anime. In the manga, he is protrayed as the man with a hidden agenda. His relationship within Akito is misunderstood. Akito is a man in the anime, but in the manga Akito is a girl. Of course the actual proof known as "breasts" does not appear in chapter 97.

God help the poor soul who will have the duty of directing the second season.

To me it's okay if the anime differs from the manga, just as long as the spirit is the same. However, then the subject of "artistic liscense" comes in, and how far studios can go, etc. Like, with Ranma 1/2 after a certain point Rumiko Takahashi wouldn't give the studio the rights anymore because she was unhappy with the way the animated series was going. And that's no good.

Usually I prefer to just read the manga (as long as that was the thing that came first) because it's the author/illustrator's original. Generally I find more important detail and less fluff in mangas. If a series deviates too much you lose things like character development, or someone changes into a completely different character. But if the anime & manga are completely the same, like InuYasha, I do get a tad bored, although I like hearing the voices.

As for FMA...the anime is what got me started on it, but I like the manga way better. I think the anime is really good, but after reading the manga I found episodes in the anime to be extraneous. Plus, some really great scenes were cut from the anime.

There is something to be said for the art of translating the manga into a moving image, though. It's just a matter of how well they do it. And of course, anime movies that were never mangas I find can be SO GOOD. Throw me something that studio Ghibli does, and I'm happy.

I think they try to make he animie more interesting by basing it off the manga but still changing it but i wish they were the same.

I think it should and it shouldn't because there are people who read the Anime and the manga and they want it to be different and there are some people who can't get the Anime so they get the manga instead so they want it to be like seeing the Anime itself.

Fullmetal alchemist I believe went well even though it sorta went off, but i still enjoyed watching it.
The Anime Series that bothers me so far is D.N.Angel, i don't like how the anime director changed many things about it.

It depends.
If it sticks to the manga, you've seen it all before.
If Fullmetal Alchemist didn't go in seperate paths after the first season, it wouldn't have ended up like it did.
This way, we have twice the Fma stuff to follow!
Which is good, because we have more, of course.
But there are times when I truly wish they added the Xing crew.
But it went okay compared to what could have happened- Cough, Cough, Naruto.

Generally, I prefer when they follow the manga.
Why? The creator knows the characters, and usually ends up with a more interesting plot (which again, in my opinion, is true with Arakawa's work), and there are times when the anime is filled to the brim with, well, filler.

Indeed it might be fun to have twice stuff of one series, but I usually don't like the ending they made.

It was disappointing that they doesn't have Ling (and the other character) in FMA and made their own ending + "story"? In manga, we still don't know how homunculi are made, right? And the one who's commanding the homunculi is the mystery Hohenheim-like guy, not Dante.

Another example was Ouran High School Host Club. The manga still haven't end yet and BONES studio made up an ending by putting an extra character in it. Or else, it was great to see animated series Ouran was fun to watch in anime because of the comedy. I could say that I might not had laughed so much of the manga than anime.

There are many reasons to why studios tend to make animes different from the manga. Here are some examples.

One, you all must know that while manga is freely written since it has no limit other than specific pages to how you draw it, animes have many limits. One, they all need to fit one good episode into a 22 minute space that doesn't arruptly end. Sometimes, it may be too little time or too much time so they either quicken the pace and leave out some parts or drag the story to the end. Also, animes have limited episode numbers to of how much it's popular or budgeted or how much devotion and time the studio is giving to the anime. It's either 13, 24, 26, 51, or so on episodes. Somehow the studio must figure out how they can fit the manga story into those episodes so they switch around a bit.

Two, sometimes, an anime might slowely follow a manga but then it's usually the ending that messes everything up. Mangas are the original story, if the anime studio asks the mangaka to give them the ending when the manga hasn't ended and animate it out, then it becomes a spoiler to the manga. Also, sometimes anime makers must figure out to make out an ending to an anime in the last episode or two. This can strike endings in heavily ways.

Next, mangakas usually request anime studios to actually change the manga story because if the anime is EXACTLY like the manga then it would become too boring. Even Hiromu Arakawa, the mangaka of FMA, asked BONES to change it. She thought another version would be more fun than exactly following her manga.

Lastly, I do sometimes wish the anime to be exactly like the manga but then if it was really like that for all animes, then I wouldn't really try downloading all those episodes just to watch the exact same thing. There's even animes where I perfer the anime than the manga. Like Card Captor Sakura, Shaman King, etc. And there's animes where I think it's pretty much okay regardless of their few small changes. There are animes where I dread and wish to kill the studio just for it, like Chrono Crusade, Black Cat, etc. (DIE GONZO!!)

I really wouldn't agree exactly on the anime should be exactly like manga, it is sometimes fun to watch different situations of the anime but sometimes I do feel the ughs from it. I guess it really depends on different animes whether they should be exactly like the manga or not, it has its ups and downs. The FMA anime for example, was disappointing for its lack of Xing characters, the chapters of the Ishbal War, and the elements from the manga, but it did gave us tons of stuff that the manga didn't like Ed going over to 'our world', Al dressed up as Ed, Ed finally getting back his one arm, the Tringham brothers, puffy haired Ed, cool action scenes not found in the manga, and many other amusing and funny scenes. Just enjoy the anime as it is, or just hold a strike in front of the studio.

Well, I think the manga gets boring if the anime is exactly like it and vice versa. I find it better if the manga and anime go seperate ways. More interesting that way, yet somehow confusing... @_@

In general, I prefer manga over anime. Since most anime derives from a manga series first, it can be extremely dissapointing when a scene in the manga you love does not show up in the anime. However, sometimes anime does do a better twist than manga.

There are some differences in the FMA series that I don't like. Such as: spoiler ahead!!

That's like the equivilent to saying that movies should follow books to the 't'. It doesn't bother me all that much to have anime that's not exactly the same as the manga. As long as the majority of the storyline is there, then who cares if there's a few changes? I mean look at the anime that do closely follow manga, InuYasha, Naruto, Bleach etc.... there's like a bajillion episodes to watch hahaha....
