A Pierrot's Aria
This is a prelude to an absolutely incredible volume!

I've always thought the altercation between Scar and his brother to contain very interesting and thought-provoking viewpoints and allusions. Should you try to save your people with the very thing their such deep-rooted values condemn? Should the deeply established, religious dogma of a dying nation be sacrificed to save the people?

I think it's pretty clear that values and God are quite important to the people. So since their God is important to them, they (at least, the more 'traditional' Inshvalans like Scar) would understandably try to stick with means of fighting that doesn't involve heresy. But what if there's simply no way to do that? Would it mean that the Ishvalan people should accept their fate as the will of their God, or do they see alchemy and the religious link (which I go onto mention later) as a sign from their God --therefore acting as a justification for using alchemy?

Having said that, by looking at that scene, you can see some other Ishvalans checking out Scar's brother's alchemy notes/books. Not only that, but it seems apparent that they're willing to use Alchemy, too. Perhaps because Scar is an Ishvalan Monk/warrior, it's therefore arguable that he has a higher sense of religiosity, due to certain training, etc. I think, overall, you can really see both sides of the situation.

I also find it interesting that Scar makes a link between religion (the Ishvalan religion, in this case) and alchemy (Xingese, but alchemy none-the-less). When Scar's brother speaks of the 'Dragon's Pulse', Scar likens it to how their Earth God, Ishvala, works. And in an earlier chapter, Ling likens the action of clapping to use alchemy to the action you'd use when praying to God. I just find it intriguing how these links are made between a religion and a science.

I also love the appearance of Winry's parents in this chapter. And that even in the face of danger, they choose to stay in order to help their patients. I also love that they don't choose to treat/not to treat their patients based on race, but instead, help whoever needs helping, even if it's their so-called enemy; it's very noble of them.

The ending is also very intense and builds up nicely as a bridge to the next chapter!

I'd love to see everyone else's comments upon re-reading this chapter. I hope you can all join in with our discussions in our re-reading FMA project! biggrin.gif
