man if alchemy excisted i would learn it imediatly but in this world the chemistry is a thing to change salt into other things , personaly i hate chemistry

When ever I experiment with the anode effect in physics it is really like a form of cold fusion or fire from water.

it is possible to change atoms into another substance w/ the same compostion, but you need a powerful nuclear explosion...

To tell you the truth, real chemistry/physics can be just as interesting as Alchemy.

After all, FMA doesn't have supersolids.

You're right.

It seems like the only thing we need now is another world where people die all the time and the energy from the souls go to our world for use in the transmutation of objects. Or... we can just try to encapsulate nuclear explosions for energy and use them in particle accelerators and transmute objects with the help of technology. We have after all tons of nukes made during the Cold War era. ROFLMAO.

I love to study Alchemy; I even have books about it, explaining it a bit and telling you origins.

Sure, it's not as amazing as FMA's, but it really is an amazing real-world science when you really think about it. Especially since it happens everyday in different forms.

SImple thing..such as making pickle is the prime example of alchemy in real life...

Oh, I would love to do same kind of alchemy as they do in FMA. It's a shame that it is not possible. I think that alchemy is far more interesting than our chemistry.

Alchemy was practiced by ancient civilizations long ago, like ancient China and Europe. I don't know, however, if it worked out or not.

This thread should be closed because alchemy is impossible. I meant the FMA type alchemy which this thread is obviously pointing to.

Thanks for pointing this out. I'm sure in it's 2+ year existence the Mods never noticed this thread so have yet to delete it. The fact that Tombow has edited the thread and several, if not all, the mods have posted in this thread at least once clearly shows that the mods don't mind it being here.

Many posts on this thread are talking about Alchemy as in "our world" type of real life Alchemy and relating to some of their own experiences or posting their thoughts on it.

I read the latter half of this thread and I read the posts pertaining to "real life" alchemy which is obviously chemistry. Why not change the title to something like "Alchemy and Chemistry" then?

Tombow's merriness and happy-all-around scares me ... too much smilies and kind words overshadow some of his aggressive wording pattern. Just like this.

Say it with absolutely no smilies or nicer wording in the other paragraphs thereafter and it's gonna sound intimidating.

Actually the question asked here should be is it possible.
Which is more debatable. Alchemy as in FMA terms is the chemical reaction and nuclear transmutation of elements controlled and iniate by the human mind, powered by the souls of the dead, or the act of dying on our earth.

When you put it in this terms it sounds far-fetched, then I thought of another area of science where there are theories and truths as far fetched as this. So I call up stephan Hawkings (not really) and read up on theoractical physics, about worm holes and alternate universe and quantum physics, and I realise, what we observed today are due to the effects of the world felt by us, so one can postulate, (means speculate with a little more sense) that a dimensional rift like the gate could be possible due to the theory of multiple universe where every quantum variation is realized in different universe. And then this gate might lead to a world like Edwards where alchemist do exists and perform alchemy, but since we cannot actually feel the effects of this, alchemy doesn't exist for us. After reading more mojo about some eastern energy flow theory still use in modern Chinese medicine and therapy, (me being a patient of one). I come to the conclusion that alchemy can exist but whether we will experience it as alchemy is another question, and if drawing beautiful circles would help is another matter. Furthermore I come to realized even in the anime, its impossible to use alchemy on our planet earth.

I disagree with the comments raised that alchemy as in the world of FMA is impossible in the real world.

If we assume the many-worlds variation of strng theory is correct, and that there is therefore a multiplicity of universes, theoretically technology can become powerful enough to harness immense energies of other universes. My theory of FMA is that a highly advanced civilization which existed before humans even evolved created the Gate as a highly advanced "quantum" power plant. This is - again, hypothetically - possible for humans as well to build. Somehow the energy from this plant can be tapped into by the use of transmutation circles, which channel energy for fusion.

Transmutation is easy to explain with enough energy present. If you slam two hydrogens together you get helium (with sufficient energies - and I won't elaborate the process, though it isn't quite so simple as just H-1 + H-1 -> He-4 for obvious reasons). Now if we have sufficient energy - and we need A LOT of energy, billions or trillions of degrees in heat energy for example - we can slam together heavier elements. Artifically manipulated, it could even be possible to turn lead into gold. In FMA, the materials act as a template for the creation of the next material. Now the Sun or another star wouldn't be able to turn, say, protactinium into uranium because that's extremely unprofitable - less energy is given out than is put in. But we don't care about that! Put in enough energy in and it'll work. To go the opposite way we also have forced fission.

We have to remember that the properties of an element - the element of an atom - are decided by its proton number (and the number of electrons in its outer shell but I'll deal with that later). By modifying the proton number you turn one thing into another. This is accomplished by fusing a positive hydrogen ion (i.e. a proton) into another element. With regards to the electrons, these can be created by splitting sub-atomic particles and recombining the quarks into electrons (again this would require a tad of energy - probably somewhere in the trillions of gigaJoules - or by smashing them up by chucking them at each other).

In FMA, alchemists tap into a huge source of energy to change things - maybe even entire universes' energy outputs are being used. We should be able to mimic that in a hundred years or so!

How about repairing things, and so on? Using electro-magnetic charges it should be possible to get the pieces of something flying back together again! Manipulating the positions of the leptons and nucleons in the atoms of an object can cause it to split and so on. Let's not forget that removing the electrons from something causes it to collapse into an unstable state of matter - electrons give you solidity!

After all, Arthur C. Clark once said: "Sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic".

Well, it is. Alchemy is just chemistry with an Arabic "the", heh. But I'm speaking about FMA "alchemy". I think that sooner or later we'll have the capacity to mimic that kind of alchemy - though I doubt that capacity will ever be used.

The anime/manga "Alchemy" belongs to Fiction. That's obvious.

But alchemy is a science who really've existed and now it's named Chemestry.
